What kind of batting for flannel quilt?
This is my first time using flannel and I love it. It's a dream to sew on it. My machine loves it. What kind of batting do I use? The front and back are flannel. I only use wool batting, but something is telling me that I probably use something else. I love the warmth of wool, but would it be too much with flannel? Too warm? I love warm, but I don't want unbearable hot.. What do you suggest?

I just washed and dried my very first flannel quilt today (flannel front and back) and for batting I used Pellon Legacy 100% cotton which was recommended by my LQS since I had no idea what to use either for a flannel quilt. She said it drapes really nice and it does. I did not prewash any of the flannel and it only shrunk 1 inch from each side of the finished quilt so I was beyond thrilled!

I prefer Warm & Natural -- with flannel, it makes a nice cozy quilt, and looks so nice when its washed after its quilted...it puckers nicely. Don't think that would be too warm...you live in an even colder area of Oregon than I do, and these types of quilts are perfect for Salem. We use heavy flannel sheets for the bed, 2 blankets and a quilt on top, and its warm enough for DH. For me, I end up folding the quilt and top blanket aside and sleeping with one blanket & the flannel sheet top and I'm good.

I used two layers of 6 ounce poly batting on my really warm one, but I tied it--I don't think it would be possible to stitch it very easily. I used one layer of poly for others. Poly dries quickly, and with a flannel top and back (which don't dry very quickly), I thought it might be helpful.
