I FMQ on a Kenmore 117.740 made in 1956. It's in a cabinet which gives me a large flat area and lots of stability. That machine is dedicated to FMQ, it's always set up and ready to go.

It's very similar to my avatar, but it's a different color and has a couple of other tiny differences. I love having 2 of essentially the same machine - I don't have to re-learn what knob does what!

I have my best results on my dinky mechanical Brother XR-52 - basic Walmart variety but bought in Costco over 12 years ago. It has a small harp space and horizontal bobbin - not fussy about anything and just hums.

I use my Janome 8900 for FMQ. I tried using several other machines for quilting, but when I bought the Janome, everything just clicked and it does a beautiful job. I love it!

One with a large throat space would work well. the more space, the easier to move the quilt through.
