It's all in the fabric for me!! That's why I never liked too much quilting on all that pretty fabric. You simply must see it all!

All that and since I am a LA quilter, I check the quilting - it needs to enhance the beauty of the piecing. Quilting can make or break a quilt...turn beauty to awful or a sow's ear into a silk purse!

Seems to me a lot of the wow factor in a quilt is contrast, just as with an artist, the ability to see light and shadow is what makes it take shape and be appealing.

Color!! In the last couple of days I have looked at the starburst pattern from Keepsake Quilting in a few different colorways. The first one I saw made me say wow and now I want the pattern. The last one I saw was nice but wouldn't have made me want the pattern.

It is rare that a quilt gets a WOW from me, but I must say the design and fabric choices such as in Dunster's Log Cabin Diamond Star quilt.

The other thing is when people can take tiny bits of fabric and create an incredible scene, such as people's faces and places that require depth and perception to view, without changing the shape of the patches. One such quilt was a rocky canyon and it was magnificent.

I am no artist. I like my traditional blocks in nice colors and that is my limitation. I don't care to create art, but something that will provide warmth and comfort for the recipient.

I envy many who have real artistic talent in creating their quilt and love to view them, but I don't get the WOW to often for traditional quilts, which I love.
