I took a Marti Michell 2 day workshop in August, attended a lecture by Joe Cunningham...Joe the Quilter...this past week. I'm a member of the Marti and Me Club and will enjoy all of the tips she passes on to us. I've just completed a BOM with our LQS instructor and will be taking her next BOM. My husband thinks I shouldn't have to take classes, that pictures in books should be enough, but nothing takes the place of sewing and learning with other!

I'm a do it your selfer... like to figure it out myself.
Also find that I just can't schedule it in with work and kids...
I've always done it that way with everything.
I really pushed to learn some computer software and nearly beat the program into submission...
This does not always work but I do like the challenge.

So I've never taken a sewing class except Home Ec in high school way back.

A few years ago, Eleanor Burns had a class in Overland Park, KS on her Victory quilt. I was one of a few that was asked to assist in this class. This woman is a ball of energy all the time. Bought her book, had her sign it and got a picture of this. It was an amazing experience.

So sorry for your bad experience at your LQS not all are that way most are nice. You can find companionship from the classes. Check for other ones or a guild.
