My LA isn't an HQ but a couple of years ago I purchased the HQ VersaTool at a quilt show. I LOVE it. It has etched lines for SID, a curve, a scallop, 90degree angle and notches for your hopping foot to use when going around applique. It really is a versatile little ruler (about 8in long and 4 in wide) and quite inexpensive. I'm sure I paid less than $15 for it. The dealer was actually demonstrating it on a sit-down machine so it can be used on both sit-down and LA. I really use this ruler a lot. Probably one of my best purchases.

It really is possible to hold the ruler and move the fabric at the same time! On a LA, you move the handles and hold the ruler so it isn't all that much different. Feathers aren't what you use the rulers for. Rulers are for grid designs (either curved or straight), baptist fans (using circular rulers), clamshells, etc. I do most of my FMQ in a pretty free style with lots of headbands, paisleys, stars, hearts, flowers, leaves, etc, but there are times when a more formal approach is better.
