Default HELP PLEASE--re a Viking 980 & a Singer " Althena " 2000

My elderly friend has both machines --not working. Local repairman moved so we are lost.
The cords and foot pedals have been checked -OK so power going to machine. Any ideas or
suggestions would be greatly appreciated since I have the web. So far haven't found anything except
an ebay sale for the Viking which she has had about 20 yrs. -prefers to keep/use it because of familiarilty.
It just stopped working.
I tried the Singer and it sounds like the motor works but sounds like a belt may have come off --BUT I don't
even know if it actually has a belt inside it. I refuse to take this apart as I only do small jobs on my
vintage machines.
These really aren't Vintage --just 2 machines causing a lot of aggravation to a lady that only does charity
work for needy children. That is why I want to get help for these machines for her.

We are in south west Florida area. Will be looking for any replies. Thank You

Are you looking for a repair person nearby? Because I think fixing either machine will require taking the machine apart to some extent.

There are specialized forums for vintage Viking and Singer sewing machines at groups.yahoo.com . You might get more specialized help on those groups but, if you do not want to take the machines apart, I'm not sure they will be of much help.

In my area, if I had to take both machines in to a repair shop, the cost would likely be as much as the cost of a new sewing machine from Walmart (about $200). I would suggest just getting a new machine. Then you have all the time in the world to investigate fixing up the old ones.

Edit: I found this website with tips and schematics for the Althena:
