I've been using a size 14 needle which works fine as long as I shorten the stitch length. I also use a small paintbrush dipped in water to "paint" the stitching lines before I tear the paper off. When the paper is a little wet, it comes right off easily.

your needle size is should go with the thread choice.
the paper you are using may be the problem- or the type of needle- a sharp is a good choice. the lightest weight paper you can find will help- shorten the stitch length

Thank you everyone for your responses. I changed the needle size to 12 and the paper to tracing paper and it's working
out really well.

I use a size 12 needle and the elementary school drawing paper that you can get at office supply stores (great buys at the beginning of school). It will run through the inkjet printer (I haven't tried the laser printer). If I'm out of that I use the cheapest printer paper I can find (less than 20#). If you have problems tearing the paper off after stitching, crease your paper at the stitches and mist with a small spray bottle filled with plain water. It will weaken the paper.

I use old telephone white pages for paper piecing and haven't had this problem and I haven't had any problems. The paper comes off easily also.

I use a Microtex 70 needle with a 1.5 stitch, 60wt thread and newsprint paper...makes PPing sooooo much easier and enjoyable!
