Ok - I did this not too long ago - what I did is one single pinwheel block - I used a method I found on this site - I cut out two large squares (I don't remember the size ) - then you sew right sides together - all four sides - yes all four - then cut across the diagonal twice - open up the blocks - you will have the pinwheel - then I added a large border I will see if I have a pic.

Lol dglvr, when I read your post I was thinking you meant start with a square and just add borders until it was the right size! I was trying to think of a picture to add to the middle instead of just a fabric square, and do that! My husband suggested a huge log cabin square because I love log cabins. I am really liking the star or pinwheel idea though..... so many great ideas!
Otis, I would love to see a picture, I hope you find one!

This giant block idea is fascinating! It could be the front of a quilt just as easily as the back. A new version of the One Block Wonder.

I like the pinwheel too. However, when I think of a log cabin I think of a comfy happy home. Beings its for your mom that would be something to think about.
And I'm awake now too.
