Okay I read the original post out loud to my husband and asked him what his answer was. His reply? "The ultimate guy quilt would be made of denim and leather!"

Lol. Now I know I'm on the right track - I made a denim quilt for him, it's a wholecloth quilt with an enormous applique of his family crest in the center. It just needs to be quilted and then it's all his.

My men all have quilts made from Civil War reproduction fabric. Used traditional patterns.
They all love their quilts.

When I went to make a "manly" quilt, I just made sure the fabrics had no floral design in them. Leafy was okay but no flowers even the two-tone versions. As to the pattern used, one was a disappearing 9-patch and the other was Bonnie Hunter's Bricks & stones. Its hard though to find a white/beige fabric without some sort of floral on it these days. When I do find one such as stripes or checks, plaids texture I grab it for future "manly" quilts.

If someone handed me a stack of " Gun prints, camo, bear, deer, trout and cabins and lots of plaid" . . . . I believe I would be inspired to cut it up into 1 inch hexies and make a grandmother's flower garden. It could be kind of striking.

I am currently making a quilt that I have started calling the 'redneck quilt". So far, it has an applique of a deer, pillow panels of hunting, fishing, and somewhere it will have an emblem of the car company that he is a master mechanic for, snapshots of his grandkids, and whatever else his DW can come up with. So far it is growing as blocks are developed. I will post when finished. Please understand that this is a quilt designed by a non-sewer so it may not be classically pretty, but it will be everything he loves.

I made my dad a lap quilt with a John Deere tractor theme and he LOVES it (He's 88 and grew up on a farm in MT). I think you are being a little (a LOT) too hard on what you obviously dislike. Not all men dislike these things as you obviously do.

For myself? Strong, dark colors like blue, some greens, and a smidgen of black.

One thing to watch out for are reds/greens/browns, especially of similar value. Like many guys, I am colorblind in that range.

In the Pacific Northwest, we would probably do flannel in log cabin fashion which would include plaids, tree/forest theme woolies flannels. Anything portable for those weekend outings even to the beach.

Editted to add- this will be the one he takes camping, so pretty is not important. A friend of his, has one made by his DW, so my friend's DH wants one too. (She just keeps telling him she can't sew. Lol!)

Some people would consider that an oxymoron.

Whatever you make, it needs to be DURABLE. Able to go where the HE-MAN goes, on the ground in the woods, under the car in the grease; make it useful!!
