Craftnut has good advice, and someone else on here said to square to the seams, not the edges. That is very important. If you're squaring something with a diagonal line in it, put that diagonal line on the ruler on the diagonal seam. That will give you good points.

I hope this works, here is a pic that illustrates the concept. See how the diagonal line goes through the middle point to point to the corners? Center the middle of the ideal size in the center, then cut off the excess on all four sides. In this case, the halfway point is 2-1/8 and the block will be 4-1/4 when squared up.
