I don't remember the name of the pattern--but it was complicated. I bought yards and yards of each fabric. Even made drapes. My husband died and I sold the house and moved from Texas to California. I finally finished it ten years later. My new husband didn't like it--said it was too pink (which it was). So I gave it to the next door neighbor who was very pleased to get it and uses it on the spare room bed. I've made dozens of quilts and throws and charity quilts and quilts of valor. But I still go over and visit my first quilt occasionally. I left the drapes in my Texas house.

My first attempt at quilting was a quilt for my son. I had no idea how to quilt and since it was 45 years ago things were different as far as availability of information. I set up a barn with an opening door and multiple farmyard icons and sewed it to the background--I wouldn't actually call it applique. When it came time to quilt it, I did not have a clue. Meanwhile my boy was growing up. I boxed it and put it away and somewhere over the years it disappeared. My first real quilt was completed 40+ years later. I finished my first quilt and was instantly addicted to quilting and have made about a dozen quilts in a little over a year. I seem to be picking up speed and the quality is improving by leaps and bounds. If I still had that flimsy from the 70's, I bet I could finish it!

The first quilt I ever made was a 9 patch and hand quilted it. #2 quilt was a queen size pinwheel quilt and my 1st machine quilted quilt ever.

My first quilt top was a log cabin by QIAD. I got the top done, but had to teach myself how to quilt & didn't know what to do next, so it sat for about ten years. I found a friend who told me how to sandwich it & we got that done, but again it stalled until 2-3 years ago when I made a Mariner's Compass for DH & we used it to back it. My actual 1st whole quilt, happened as I recovered after Chemo & I had so much fun making blocks I didn't stop at only one! LOL! I made enough blocks for two quilts and a big floor pillow, so one went to my granddaughter for Christmas that year.

Hey, mford: Obviously you did everything right if a professional was able to finish and quilt it. That says volumes about your talent.

My first quilt was from a picture of a placement and made with decorator fabrics left over from my remodeling binge (slip covers, curtains and pillows). Had no clue about 1/4 inch seams, batting or binding or the wonderful rotary cutter. Cut lots of strips by hand. It is a full-sized quilt. Amazingly that quilt has held up pretty well, with only a few places where the binding is fraying. Moved on to a feathered star quilt that used Y seams. But I now had a cutting mat, rotary cutter and a book to guide me. Missed a few points but considering it was only my second quilt, am quite pleased with it. It hangs in my living room as we speak.

I started with a pattern I figured out for myself and was so proud when it was finished. I bought used mens shirts at a thrift shop (all the shirts you can fit in a grocery bag - 15-) and cut my pieces from that fabric. Hand quilted it using a template. Didn't know the dased lines on the template were supposed to be merged into flowing lins. So I stopped at tach dash and knotted my thread and hid the knot then started at the next place. Took forever; broke my back leaning over the quilt frame but I finished it. It came back for repair a few years later. All the old fabrick fell apart. Then I started machine quilting on a little Singer with about a 5 inch area for free motion quilting. I do think the less I knew about the right wayto do it, the more I got done. I found this board and learned so much. Everyone here is so willing to share.

For me it was a long process. I started sewing young, mostly clothing. But dreamed of making a quilt for my bed. Gave up sewing because of space for a while. When I revisited sewing, I had some cut out fabric from cereal box template. Wow imagine that! I can all so remember laying on my bed trying to figure out a pattern in a book, just pondering how to go about making a quilt fit my bed. No, tiny steps for me. That first baby size lap seemed so big. Then came the empty nest, which means empty rooms. The internet has been a learning blessing for me. I could of never came this far without the quilting board. And of course, my tv heroes.

I did. I did a queen sized quilt with 2 different blocks:a snowball, and one with Y seams as my first quilt. I think the pattern was called garden trellis. I had a friend show me how since she had one for a shower curtain. I hand quilted it, which was quite a task since no one told me you can't quilt through a bed sheet as a backing. I had to use a little needle puller for every loaded up needle. I did finish it and it came out beautiful! I kept it on our bed for many years. Now it graces the bed in our RV. I still love that quilt although it could use a binding replacement sometime soon. When I do that I will use the sewing machine this time around.

My first quilt was McKenna Ryan's Owl quilt. All applique-all 12 blocks. I didn't know how to applique properly, but I made the whole thing, FMQ it and carried it to a wedding in New Zealand to give to my Aunt that lives in Australia that collects owls. She was over the moon for it, I guess that's all that matters. I tend to be one that starts with the hard things first. Cutting all those little pieces got me through a month of sitting with my Dad every day while he was in the hospital. These days I take my little tote with "La Pass" in it for all his appointments! I've come a long way
