I often use muslin (available at just about any fabric store), but usually piece my backs.

I get a lot of my backing fabric from Fabric.com. Really nice stuff and lots of choices in the 108-120" range.

I just used John Flynn's method for piecing backing on the diagonal to increase the width. It really works and sure saved fabric. The instructions are on John Flynn's web site under workshops.
