Where to get fabric as a beginner?

I've been buying fabric all my life I think! Started sewing my own clothes at thirteen.
My answer is buy it anywhere you see what you like. And let people around you know that you are a quilter and you will most likely be the recipient of their grandmother's scraps if they don't sew.
Yard sales, Craig's list and thrift shops can also be good sources. The For Sale or Trade section of this board is always a great place to shop.
Any time you see a shop that might be a fabric store, check it out!
And if you like doing totes, check out upholstery and drapery manufacturers and custom shops for their scraps or outdated sample books.
Happy quilting and fabric shopping!

Your location indicates you are in Arkansas. I don't know how close you are to Marshall's Dry Goods in Batesville but if I lived near there that is where I would go!

LOL @ Sue Z's comment. I just started in January, and purchased fabric just enough for my first 2 projects. Now I have scrap-stash started for a scrappie project. Then I found an ad on Craigslist (and another and another...but only acted on one of them- LOL!) I've browsed ebay and etsy and found some GORGEOUS fabrics, and wonderful sellers. I actually FOUND a stash in my basement for a project I never did about 6 years ago. AND IT'S NEARLY YARD-SALE SEASON HERE IN THE NORTHEAST! WHOO HOOO! Have fun!

Try your local quilt shops and google "quilting fabric" -- Hancocks of Paducah (not to be confused with Hancock Fabrics) has a large selection of fabric. I've been in there shop, and it's a candy store for quilters. The only problem with shopping on line is that colors don't come across true. If you have an Iphone there's a free app from Quilters Club of America that will list shops in the area you are in whether you are at home or traveling. I too prefer traditional quilting rather than the modern that is so popular now. My favorite fabric is Moda. It seems to have the style I prefer. I have to tell you that "old timey fabrics" are hard to find today. I've been looking for a soft pink floral, but everything has a modern look with bright pinks. Happy hunting. Remember the first part of quilting fun is the shopping.
