[my repair man put this in the top under the spool spindle, it just screwed off and it did sound better...there was a place underneath also but can't remember where...he said its a lubricant[/quote]

There is a set of gears on the bottom of the machine that gets Singer lube too. I work on FWs too. Make sure that you don't get any oil or lube on the internal belt, that will cause it to shred eventually.
There are holes all over the machine where a drop of oil goes.
