have any quilters used velvet and satin to make a throw or lap quilts. i have one in my head but am looking for any advice and suggestions you can give me

You would need to make your seams closer to 1/2" and beware of stretchy velvet (which much of it is), but you can make something really gorgeous!

Several yrs ago, a friend used WM velvet & satins to make crazy quilts.She then did a lot of embroidery by hand & they sold for lots of $$.Don't know how those fabris would wash? I'm sure there's someone on here who can advise you.

I find it easier to work with both fabrics whether the are used together or not if they are stabilized with a light weight stablizer or interfacing, no stretch on the velvet or slipping with the satin.

a walking foot will help with the velvet too. Ifd you can fit it under your sewing machine foot and a needle can go through it, you can sew whatever you want to! :)

A lady in my quilt group just tried and said that the velvet moves too much when being sewed so gave up !

Stabilize, larger seam allowances, think about how much washing the quilt will need when choosing the velvets and satins, maybe use more washable types? and have fun :D:D:D

I wouldn't use velvet, it is so slippery it shifts while sewing, but velveteen looks nice and doesn't slip. I never had a problem with satin, but I too would use a wider seam.And if it is for somethingyou will want to wash, I would wash it first.

I've made three crazy quilt lap robes, but have always assumed that they were to be made by hand. Some final machine fancy stitches can be added before sandwiching them, and different colored tread is a must. I want fancy and I want over the top Victorian looks for these. As for cleaning them, I tote them to the dry cleaners when they need it, every few years.
