As the others have said - it's for a spoon or some cookies. I've made mug mats out of squares. There are no hard fast rules. I've made several quilts not using patterns and some times I end up with a block or two from color experiments. I just zip them up and toss them into the basket for m-rugs. Matter of fact.. I have enough odd ball experiments now that I'm going to make my coworkers alllll mug rugs for their desks this Christmas. Nothing fancy, but just fun. Have fun making them....that's the main thing!
Fayzer...
Don't think I didn't notice that beautiful binding on your mug rug...LOL.. NICE! Really a fun looking "mug mat" too!

Usually for a morsel of goodness to go along with the cheer.......
or coffee!!!
I make them whatever size works best for the pattern I am using.
Mine have been from 5"x 9" to a 7" square.
it's your decision.....
