Wide backing fabric...
[SIZE=5][SIZE=6]This always confuses me. If I'm making a queen sized quilt, how much backing fabric do I need? I always get confused because of the width of this. If you need, for example, 8 yards to cover your back, do you still need 8 yards of the wider width fabric? I know a yard is a yard; but it's wider!
I know this should be easy, but it's sometimes the easy answers that confuse me!

How big is your quilt going to be?
Yes, queen sized ........... but there is no set size.
We all make different sizes for a queen!
So ... wideback is anywhere's from 90" to 108" approx. for WOF
If you buy one yard you will have 36" x WOF
Two yards ... 72" x WOF
etc. .........

Use this calculator. You enter the dimensions of your quilt and the amount of overhang you want on backing fabric and the width of the backing fabric. It will calculate how much you will need of the wide backing

It depends on the width of the wide back. If the backing is 108, then that measurement would do the whole width or length across the back. You just need to order 2-3 yards depending on the other length measurement.

First I figure out if the backing fabric is sufficiently wider than my quilt. For example, if my quilt is 90" wide and the backing fabric is 108" wide, I know I don't have to worry about width.
Hopefully this is the case with your quilt. If so, all you have to do is measure the length of your quilt. If you don't intend to pre-wash your backing, then you can order the length of your quilt plus 10 inches or 15 inches (depending on how much extra you want). If you are going to pre-wash, I would order at least 1/2yd extra in case the fabric shrinks.
You can do the reverse also. That is, see if the wide backing fabric is sufficient for the length of your quilt and, if so, simply measure the width and add some extra.
If the backing fabric isn't wide enough, that is a whole 'nother story because you will need to piece the backing.

I always buy 3 1/3 yd, which is 120". So the piece is 106" x 120". Most of the 108" fabrics aren't really that wide. But then i end up with a little extra full length strips to use as borders on another quilt.
3 yards would be 3x36" = 108". And usually, rather than 1/3 yd, you have to choose 3/8 yd.

if the backing fabric is 108" wide- 3 yards would give you another 108"...your piece would be 108 X 108. how large is your 'queen' sized quilt? 2 1/2 yards gives you 108" x 90"...just figure out how large the quilt is, decide how much extra you need for your backing (generally about 10" or so to make up for shrinkage ect) then divide that amount by 36",,, the amount of a yard- the answer will tell you how many yards you need. (if your quilt measures 93" x 100" I would buy 3 yards- the extra gives you enough + a little left over
