Here's a link to a ton of mug rug ideas:

I've always thought paper piecing would make great ones. Here are some that are on my to do list:

So a mug rug is a coaster? I'm new to the lingo! Is there a special waterproof batting or just the regular kind?

I just use warm & natural as my batting. Sometimes folks like to make mug rugs a bit larger..say 7 x 9 inches or so in case you might want to have a cookie or two along with whatever drink is in your mug. I call the little circles just big enough for a cup to sit on coasters and mug rugs are larger. Anyone concur?
Here is link to a MR swap a few months ago on the board.

Can anyone point me in the direction on a tutorial to make these mug rugs? I've seen some beautiful ones made so I'd love to make some as Christmas presents. Thanks ladies!

Default Simple mug rug

I made this for a friend for Christmas. Very quick and simple - a quilt as you go rectangle with binding.
