I usually go by touch- smoother side out. But muslin- can't tell. I just it as it is- whatever side it I cut it.

If it is really important to you, I think it's fair to assume that the side that was folded inward on the bolt is the right side. Just use a safety pin to mark that side before prewashing it. Then you'll know - but most people will still be unconcerned about it. :-D

It is usually easier to tell the right side before it is washed by the way it was folded on the bolt. If in doubt I will put a mark on the selvedge down the fabric to help me remenber.

Often the best way is to look at the weave in the selvedge. The right side will have a more finished weave then the wrong side.
If neither of this works then just mark to use the same side throughout the piece in case some difference should show up in use.
and stilll if there is not difference in look I just try and use the same side through the work.

Have used muslin my whole quilting life, and have no idea which is the front, and which is the back. Sure hope it doesn't make a difference LOL

The overwhelming response to a Google search on the question of whether there is a right and wrong side to muslin is that there is no difference at all, that it is totally reversible. For whatever that's worth.
