I used 12 different FQ fabrics for my quilt -- thinking it was twin size. Some florals touched but one had more flowers and one had less flowers. Still looked nice and my sister loved it.

According to this article, one would only need four colors to not have any colors touch each other.

Yellow Brick Road
I made a queen size YBR for my bed and only used 1/2 the colors. If it calls for 24 fat quarters, I would buy 1/2 yard of 12 fabrics.

my YBR for me
I've made 5 or 6 of these for gifts throughout the years and it is one of my favorite patterns. I finally made one for me. And it all came from my stash. I am not sure how many fabrics I used but Sassy sure likes it.

Beautiful! I'm going to make myself one with that same concept.
PS--I've always thought that Chagrin Falls is the coolest place name--what is the provenance of the name?

I use 6 fabrics for the main part of the quilt--two lights, two mediums, and two darks; and I try to make sure there is a variety of prints--small scale, medium scale, large scale. I also strive to make sure there are a variety of types of prints--circles, squares, dots, floral, novelty, quiet, noisy, etc. I will sometimes use different fabric for the borders and/or back--still keeping within the color scheme and subject theme that I chose. I also tried to make sure that the same two fabrics didn't touch each other. These "rules" always gave me interesting quilts when I made a yellow brick road quilt. Carolyn
