If I was your grandmother, I would definitely love to know that you make quilts, and would be thrilled that you have the skill to make my UFO something not only worth treasuring for the memory, but worth bringing out of hiding and using. Isn't that how you would feel about something of yours that you didn't get done in the end?

Another thought: Be sure to make a label that tells the story of who, what, where and when. Even if for some reason you decide not to finish it, be sure to place a note with it. I recently had the pleasure of finishing an old top that was in my SIL's family for many years and nobody knows who pieced it. That's the risk you take if you let some treasure like this go too long. You know all about this piece, but many years down the road people who might value it if they knew the details could be left in the dark.
