Wow, you have a lot of black and whites! They are all nice and everyone's blocks are going to be so different that I don't think that anything you put together that looks good to you can go wrong.

I just remembered that I have a few FQs of black and white that I am not going to use for a black/white/red quilt I am working on because the white background with black design is going to fade into the background of the white with red design.

Gives me some more choices for a second set of blocks.

Wow, you have some great prints! Just use any two that have sufficient contrast and you'll be fine. I like the two far right in the middle photo, that kind of look like pokadots, but you can't go wrong with any of these.

Yes the pattern says 12 inch block but with the 1/4" seam allowance around the sides it will end up being 12.5". And, yes, please pre-wash the fabrics.

The Friendship Star will be a great starter block for you.

If you're doing the Friendship Star pattern, I like the light fabric with the sort of wispy swirls for the background (second from the left in the first photo) and the Black with what appear to be random stars for the star itself (Far right in the third photo). I think that combination would make an attractive block.

The one that looks like stars is actually kitty paw prints. Would that still look ok or another choice?

It will still be fine. It provides contrast, which is the key.
