House Warming Patch Work by Yoko Saito.

Yoko Saito is a popular Japanese quilter, well, popular in Japan, I guess. :-) She is known for her use of neutrals-- lots of taupe, beige, gray, tans, etc. She uses wools, linens, silks, etc. besides cottons, and mixes types of fabrics in one project too. She also does a lot of hand piecing and hand quilting. And being Japanese, her book patterns are done in metric. Plus, the patterns in the book were quite small.

In my downsizing, I moved from a pc to a lap top. My lap top was new tech and my scanner/printer that I used with my pc was old tech, so I was without a way to copy her patterns unless I left home to use a scanner someplace else. So, I used graph paper to draw the patterns out. That's why you see in my previous picture all that crumpled graph paper in my scrap pile behind the stack of blocks. :-) It would have been handy to scan the patterns, then digitally re-size them. Now, I have these little piles of patterns, and I can't decide if I should save them? Maybe it's another one of those decisions where if I throw them out, a year later I will want them.

PS. You see the terrible low lighting in my bedroom where I sew... so it's a reason I prefer to not sew in the evening after I get home from work! I ought to break down and purchase a lamp.

sewbizgirl 11-16-2020 10:39 PM

Oh my goodness! Look at all those paper pieces! Thank you for the name of the book.

Macybaby 11-17-2020 05:35 AM

I have one of her books - and it's all houses. Some are free standing projects, and some are quilt patterns. It was a spendy book and I drooled over it for quite some time before buying it. Have not made anything in it yet.

Here is a peak on the last round for Jaba's quilt. Should be able to finish it this weekend and then it can go off to it's home.

Since I bought fabric for this, I bought extra dark blue so it could be used for the binding if this ends up being the finished size of the quilt. I have no idea what Jaba's plans are as far as making it larger. So I'll send the fabric along with just in case.

maryb119 11-19-2020 06:51 AM

Looks like the perfect ending, macybaby!!

maryb119 11-19-2020 08:58 AM

My door bell rang this morning and there stood my mail carrier with a package! She said, "it's too big for the box and knowing you...it's fabric." I was excited! My round robin is home! Thank you so much to all of you! I love it!! I hope to quilt it next week and I think a solid black binding will finish it nicely.

This has been fun to see the progress of each quilt as they grow. We have a talented group of ladies!! Thanks again!

sewbizgirl 11-19-2020 10:38 AM

That's a beautiful border for Jaba, Macybaby! Totally gorgeous. What pretty fabrics.

Mary, glad you got your RR, safe and sound!

I finally got help to take a picture of sewbizgirl's top. My son moved some furniture in his room so nothing was in the way, and my granddaughter took the picture while her dad and I held it up. It's big! The second picture is one of the cornerstones of the round. The bird fabric is so cute.

SBG, I'll send you tracking when I've got it in the mail.

sewbizgirl 11-19-2020 06:30 PM

Oh, that's fabulous, Giv! I love it. The colors are dreamy... and I love the little birds in the corners. Thanks so much for all the hard work!

And thanks to everyone who worked on my quilt, and all your hard work too... Rebaquilts, Iceblossom, Maryb119, LeeAnn, and Givio! It's a treasure, for sure. I'll remember my RR friends whenever I see it!

LAF2019 11-19-2020 06:44 PM

what a wonderful quilt for SBG. it's so lovely seeing the final product! the colors are fabulous and givio's final round finished it perfectly!

maryb119 11-20-2020 03:30 AM

Love the final border on SBG quilt!!

travelinggramma 11-20-2020 07:34 AM

Macybaby - great blocks and the colors are beautiful. What thoughtfulness to send along the extra for bindings. And I love how you carried her fabric choice to the end.
Givio -and all in the #1 group = SBG guilt is amazing. I only wish we could really see (and touch) each round. I am in awe of it all.
I got my back done and brought it over to the LA. It is the first time I am using her - but I have seen her work and it is good. She asked me what I wanted - All I could say === this is a round robin - treat it like you got the last round and do your thing!!

givio 11-20-2020 08:41 PM

Thanks, girls.

Macybaby, I'm looking forward to seeing your finish! ...I think we have three more tops left to see.

Macybaby 11-21-2020 12:37 PM

I was on a roll and expected to get it all finished early this morning. I got all the blocks sewn and assembled them into rows and went to pin them to the quilt - and they were way too short!

I remeasured the quilt and it was the same, 66.5", and I measured the blocks and they were as expected, 6" across.

And then it dawned on me. When I was measuring, I was very glad the quilt was 66.5 as then I could use 6" square blocks. And for what ever reason, I got "10" stuck in my brain, even though it's obvious 66/6 equals 11 . . . but that would not have been too bad, would have been four short. But I was a lot more than that.

I had "10" stuck in my head, and then somehow I got the notion that 10 was corner to corner, so I was thinking I only needed 8 per row plus for corners, when I really needed 11 per row plus four corners. So I was 12 blocks short.

The sewing is no big deal, but the problem is that I figured yardage and made sure I had enough before starting, and I didn't have enough of the purple for more than one more block, and I didn't have any large enough scraps of Jaba's fabric for the large center squares. . . So I had to get creative.

I got it figured out and sewn, and am sewing the rows on now (and this time they fit!). The good/bad part is I bought extra of the two purchased fabrics so there was enough of those, but I had to cut two more 4" wide strips from the dark blue and now there isn't enough left for the binding.

Time to get back to sewing so I can get a picture of the finished top, and then get it packed up and ready to mail.

Here are the pictures. The one without the flash is on the dark side, and the one with the flash is a bit washed out. The true colors are in between.

Can you spot the "fix"? I put the three added blocks in the middle of each row. The purple fabric is the same color as the first one, but the pattern is different. Though it's cut small enough you have to look closely to see the difference.

And though I didn't have enough of Jaba's batik left to cut 12 larger squares, I did have enough to cut enough small squares put a four patch as the center and that kept the chain of batik going around the outside. Sure do love those hummingbirds!

Now it's bagged up and will be ready to ship off on Monday.

Bugaroo 11-21-2020 02:09 PM

Givo and Macybaby... WOW! just beautiful. Love the colors and details. The both blend so well. Great job!

sewbizgirl 11-21-2020 03:09 PM

The “fix” looks great, Macybaby. Are you quilting and binding it for her too?

LAF2019 11-21-2020 03:50 PM

that is one gorgeous quilt!!!

maryb119 11-21-2020 04:30 PM

Macybaby, it's beautiful!! The 'fix' looks like it was meant to be there.

I've been considering this - but I don't know what her plans were so I don't want to unless I know she's fine with it. No idea what she prefers for batting, and my default is poly and I know many would not be happy with that. And I know some plan on adding to make the finished top a different size too. Don't want to finish it if she really needs it 10" longer.

So I was planning on playing it safe and sending the floppy, but it's not been packed up yet so those plans can be changed.

If she didn't have any plans or planned to keep it for herself, one idea would be to have anyone who wants - make a "get well/ thinking of you" block, maybe with a message with permanent ink, and I could put them together on the back of the quilt. Size (within reason) and color wouldn't matter as I'd just piece them in to fit.

Of course that would be a horrid idea if she planned this as a gift to someone else. I just don't know . . .

sewbizgirl 11-22-2020 08:50 AM

True... all proper things to consider. I didn't know if you had some sort of prior arrangement with her, when you mentioned the binding for the quilt. Her son said she'd be in the hospital a long time. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/frown.png

givio 11-22-2020 10:06 AM

Macybaby, The top looks great! I posted about it yesterday to say so, but don't see my post, so I must have clicked on something wrong that time. Let me know if the 'get well' idea flies as I'd participate. It did seem as if jaba's recovery might take some time and her RR quilt will hold memories for her, so finishing it for her own use would be a thoughtful way to have her know that quilting buddies are thinking of her. Maybe TG has her son's contact info?

carriem 11-22-2020 07:00 PM

Macybaby, your border looks great on Jaba's quilt!!

I has been so much fun watching these grow the last few months....

sewbizgirl 11-23-2020 04:59 PM

Oh my GOSH!!! My beautiful quilt came today. I LOVE it to pieces!! I am blown away by all the beautiful workmanship in this. I was surprised at how big all the applique was. The hearts, the children, all of it... seemed so much smaller in the pictures that were posted. I wish all of you could see this quilt all finished, in person. It's a masterpiece. I want to thank every one of you: Trisha, LeeAnn, Mary, Caroline and Rebecca, for putting so much thought and effort into your rounds. It certainly shows. I'm so thrilled to have this pretty robin come home to live with me! Thank you all.

It is with heavy heart that I’m writing this from the ICU. My dear 82 year old father has covid and they allowed me here because my 84 year old step mom is also infected. Only one visitor allowed. We are saying goodbye today. Iceblossom told me I could have till thanksgiving and I thought no way I’ll be done and I am done with The borders but not the corners. She was psychic. He was sick last week and quickly went downhill, admitted on Friday and will pass today. That’s why I haven’t posted anything. Please say a prayer today for Fred. I won’t probably post again for a few days and I love you all. Hugs from afar.

maryb119 11-24-2020 06:43 AM

Reba, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Iceblossom 11-24-2020 06:45 AM

Oh sweetie, quilts are the last thing to deal with right now. Take your time to say goodbye and to take care of yourself. I will not be doing anything with my top until February.

I'm having background personal issues regarding my mother who has also been hospitalized but not from Covid. It's so hard for me. We've had a terrible relationship mostly because she was a terrible mother. She has a personality disorder and is not normal and it was a hard childhood, but I've had to deal with it all my life. I am just amazed how hard it is still grieving for the mother I never had, that she will be soon gone. It breaks my heart that so many things will be left unresolved, but I have to accept that it is best that I continue to stay away.

Givio, this turned out great.

Rebaquilts, you and your family are in my prayers.

My dad tested positive for covid yesterday, he did not have the criteria to be admitted to the small town hospital so they sent him back home with medications, hospital bed and wheelchair.

sewbizgirl 11-24-2020 09:25 AM

Reba, so very sorry for your Dad's situation. Hope you will find peace. May Fred be blessed beyond measure. And your mom too... hope she recovers completely.

Mona, sorry for your Dad's diagnosis too. May he recover completely. Prayers going up for both of your families....

travelinggramma 11-24-2020 12:21 PM

Reba - be thankful that you were able to be with him. It is truly a blessing. Prayers going out for your family.
Mona - can't get over they sent him home with a bed - I hope it included a nurse too.. Praying
Got a call from the LA and she said her DH who never has an opinion - loved the quilt you all made! wow. will pick it up tomorrow.

givio 11-24-2020 06:55 PM

Rebecca, It's a difficult time for you, especially as you are just are recovering yourself from covid... and now your father and step mother have it too. I sat with my dying father (cancer) and it was a comfort to know where he was going and that we would meet again. I hope you and your father have comfort and peace too.

IceBlossom, I hope you find the way to repair the relationship with your mother while there is still time.

Mona, There are so many contact restriction guidelines... I hope you are able to be a source of strength and encouragement to your father and that he gets well soon.

...Such troubles! ...Be well one and all! ...Make sure your loved ones know they are loved.

Mona G 11-25-2020 03:28 PM

Happy Thanksgiving all! Please take some time to say aloud 10 or more things you are thankful for. :-) We are so blessed, and it's good to be grateful for those blessings and take the time to think about them.

Mona G 11-26-2020 01:18 PM

Happy Thanksgiving everyone, wishing you all a blessed day.

sewbizgirl 11-26-2020 07:13 PM

We had a great time at my daughter’s for Thanksgiving today. My little granddaughter is so precious and now that she is walking she’s into everything. I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving as well.

Hi all, thanks for the thoughts and prayers. My dad Fred Breitkreuz, passed on Tuesday from COVID. Since my step mom has COVID, and I had recovered, they allowed me into the ICU to be with him, only one visitor allowed. I never thought I would say I am glad I got COVID until now. God’s mercy is apparent even in illness. I was able to pray with my dad at his passing, just as I did for my mom. The key to beating COVID is extreme rest—reduce lung respiration. COVID feeds on lung oxygen so if you practice extreme rest, you have a chance of beating it. This knowledge came too late for my dad as he went walking and climbing stairs and went downhill in only 1/2 hour. When I tried to start doing things like housework and walking, I immediately experienced extreme shortness of breath. Tell everyone you know—give yourself a blank check to watch every rerun you want and take naps :-)

Attached are the pics of Iceblossom’s top, it’s going home finally on Monday. Iceblossom has some basket blocks she will be using for the last border, so I knew no more baskets. I liked Sewbiz’s y-seams, so when I found the rosebud block with y-seams from the 30’s Kansas City Star book, I resized them and used them, as I think they coordinate well with the basket flowers and her prior border. Although I love to use some leftover fabric in my borders to tie in the rest of the quilt, this time I had to make the blocks scrappy as the leftover fabric pieces weren’t big enough for the longer triangle points in the pattern. I tried to match Sewbiz’s in-between triangles, but the leaves of the rosebuds just got lost and it didn’t look good, so I ripped off the border and added the floral blue strip to coordinate with the arrow-blue color in the prior round.

Iceblossom likes World of Warcraft, so I decided to appliqué WOW medieval houses in the corner blocks, a nod to the darker brown in the other rounds, the arrow/pine trees/flying geese reminded me of Bavaria, so I tried to make the architecture “heavy” with stone foundations. I thought about an entire border but I felt it would be too lopsided and bottom heavy.

Thanks so much for your patience, Iceblossom. Hugs all.
