Look at all those candies!!! Nice job WMUTeach! My October candies are not in the mail, yet. Dish washer broke, carpet cleaners arrived, house is in total upheaval..... My son and family are moving in this week while their house is being built. I hope to get to the post office tomorrow but I make no promises! All my quilt stuff has taken over a wall of the garage. It is now buried behind furniture, lol. No playing with candies or boom blocks for me anytime soon...

Loveofquilts 09-28-2021 05:38 PM

Wow WMUTeach that is an awesome quilt! I may use my charms to make a quilt like that.. that's a great idea. :) Thank you for sharing it with us.

sewbizgirl 09-28-2021 08:27 PM

That is a beauty, WMUTeach. How big is it?

NZquilter 09-29-2021 03:40 AM

Such a lovely quilt, WMUTeach! All those candies just keep the eye moving across the quilt. It's like a giant I Spy.

Sewbiz, the Fading Charms quilt is 68 inches square.

I went searching for my first version of the quilt and found one from 2014. I think these little candies were from the first Birthday Swap. I don't recall if it was 2012/2013 or 2013/2014. All I know for sure is that I finished the quilt in 2014. I see I did that one pretty scrappy too. Between then and now I have done one in purples and I am thinking another in red, white and blue.

Below is the 2014 version. The gal I gave it to uses is to this day and comments from time to time about how much fun she has looking at all of the prints and patterns in the little squares. I think I left the novelty prints in the pile. Now I pull novelty prints out and use them for children's quilts or just a random touch of silliness in adult donation quilt.

Happy quilting and playing with your candies. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png

Another beautiful quilt! Wow, candies can do a bunch.

I got my three bday girls' cards mailed off today. Woohoo for October babies!

I love that one, WMUTeach! “Growing Up Odd”, isn’t it? It’s been on my bucket list for years. Very lovely execution.

The quilt I pictured above is Fading Stars. "Growing up Odd" is my avatar! I have made three of those and have one more on my "To Do" list for an old friend who commented on my avatar. The pattern is written for 2" squares but is easily translated to 2.5's. It gobbles up 2.5's and makes an interesting finish.

Found this while looking for a fall pattern - I've already started sorting my candies for it.

BTW - I did got my candies mailed off earlier this week,

Here is my progress on the leaf quilt. I sorted and then sewed all the HST. Next step was to cut and assemble the end points. Then I sewed up neutral 4 patch and appliqued the stems on.

I've got them all stacked and ready to assemble.

I lay them out one at a time, then sew together. I've got half done and am taking a break before getting to the rest. Once the blocks are done I'll start working on the border and then figure out the layout. I'm not doing any darker blocks like the picture has. I think it looks really neat that way, but I'm going smaller and didn't want to add to the complexity at this point. After all, I'd like to have it done for this fall, not next fall https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png

NZquilter 10-03-2021 08:40 AM

Wow, now I really want to try that quilt too, Macybaby! Do you have a special ruler for the tip of the leaf unit? It looks like unusual angles.

travelinggramma 10-03-2021 09:09 AM

Gee the leaves would also look great with the orange and reds and yellows and really represent autumn. hmmm

Macybaby 10-03-2021 09:20 AM

NZQuiltler, I simply drew it out to make templates. This one is pretty simple because you can go a bit longer on the edges and trim to size once sewn. I make paper templates, stack fabric and glue the template to the fabric. I'll cut the template without seam allowance, then use my ruler lined up at the 1/4" mark and cut with rotary cutter. If I need to cut a lot, I use the piece of fabric with the pattern on it as the next template.

I do have EQ8 and will use that to get templates when I've got something a bit more complicated, but often it's less work for me to make a scale drawing while at the cutting table than to go fire up the computer down in the study.

Marvelous progress, Macybaby! Keep posting photos and hints for sucess.Love it!

Love that leaf block, Macybaby.

ibex94 10-05-2021 06:26 AM

That leaf block is another great way to use our candies! Thank you for sharing, Macybaby. My file of candy possibilities keeps growing.

Macybaby 10-05-2021 01:22 PM

I made a slight miscalculation for my leaf quilt. I wanted to make it smaller, 70x70 instead of 90x90, but when I figured the number of blocks, I used 70x90 and made 19 leaves, but I'm only going to need 14.

That is not a big deal, except that when I figured the neutrals, I subtracted for 19 leaves instead of 14, and this morning discovered I needed another 150 neutral squares. I started digging through my scrap totes as I didn't have any more neutrals cut. The good/bad part is that I won't have to cut any yardage to get that many, because I've let my scraps get out of hand again!

Mine went out in today's mail.

WendyMcD, you should receive 18 packages. (19 in the swap minus yourself.) We have one birthday after our October birthday gals. .

I've got the leaf quilt top assembled. I was sewing on the border and was a few feet down when I realized I was sewing dark to light and not light to light! Then I noticed I'd run out of bobbin thread about 2" from the start of the seam. Probably the only time I was very glad to have run out of bobbin thread long before I noticed it.

NZquilter 10-06-2021 06:45 AM

Heavens to Betsey, Macybaby! How did you finish it that fast? Did you eat or sleep at all? It takes me months to finish a top. It looks amazing!!!

travelinggramma 10-06-2021 10:06 AM

Love Love Love those falling leaves - just look at all those colors - and amazing amount of neutral blocks!!
Terrific work!!

WMUTeach 10-06-2021 12:52 PM

Amazed, absolutely amazed at how fast and how well you assembled this quilt, Macybaby!

MacyBaby - I LOVE LOVE that quilt!! Great job with it - can't wait to see it quilted.

My cards will be going out tomorrow.

I was decorating my house this week and thought I would share this sweet little wall quilt I made a few years ago. I don't remember who provided the pattern. Even the ghost is done in scrappy whites. All squares are 2.5 inches.

WMUTeach 10-07-2021 04:29 AM

Thanks for the share, IrishMom. Just one more way to put our little treats to work.

For those of your who have been watching closely, you're realizing that after October we only have one more birthday gal in this year's swap. So, I thought I would suggest joining the 12 Annual Ornament Swap hosted by our very own Hav4boys. (She does not know I am suggesting this.https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png) It looks pretty simple, one person, one handmade ornament and due to be sent out in November. Just a suggestion and perhaps another way to spark our creativity.

Thanks WMU,,, off to sew and organize fabric. Terrible,,, I keep putting off unpacking in favor of sewing. I'm having fun though. Have a great day.

ibex94 10-10-2021 10:19 AM

IrishMom -- I'm going to try to make a couple of those this week. Thank you for sharing!

Macybaby -- beautiful quilt!

Macybaby 10-12-2021 02:58 AM

Would anyone in this group be interested in doing a side Christmas/Winter Season Candies swap? Was thinking 50 candies, with no more than 2 of each fabric (25 different fabrics minimum). I also figured we could mail between now and November 15th.

travelinggramma 10-12-2021 07:32 AM

Wow - i really didn't realize that there was only one more bday?? I think I have about 5 envelopes ready!!
Macybaby - what exactly are winter season colors? I do not have the tradtional Christmas/Hannukkah fabrics. Are we talking about non-pastels? I would be interested

sewbizgirl 10-12-2021 08:03 AM

Hello everyone, I also did not realize we were down to our last birthday. What month is our last birthday in?

MacyBaby, your side swap is a cool idea, but I am going to have to decline, as I don't have that many Christmas fabrics. Every year I only use them for the quilts we donate to hospitals in Dec, and every year I try to use up what I have for that year. So my stock stays low.

WMUTeach 10-12-2021 08:18 AM

What a good idea Macy! If any of you are interested in this Holiday/Winter Side Swap, send me a message (PM) and I will match partners randomly. Let me know by October 30 and be ready to drop in the mail by November 15. I will post partners on November 2. Plenty of time to make something holiday or "winter-ish" before the snow flies"!!

Just for clarity the Holiday/Winter Side Swap would be as Macybaby suggested, 50 candies, with no more than 2 of each fabric (25 different fabrics minimum). If you wish to swap with more than one partner, I need to know and will match y'all up accordingly. Dig out the Christmas Candies!

The final birthday of our group is in January! And I have a contest for October/November all ready to go. Watch for it on October 20.

NZquilter 10-12-2021 08:27 AM

I would be happy to join in a winter/Christmas candy swap! I have a lot of Christmas fabrics. Will we be able to sign up to swap with a couple of partners?
