5" Charm Swap - Dots, Dots, Dots everywhere!

April 5” Charm Swap – Color Theme (Dots, Dots & More Dots!).
Sign up ends Friday, April 13th. Swaps need to be in my hands by April 20th, with final distribution by April 28th.

***The Color Theme for this month’s Swap is All kinds of Dots!***

1. Color theme of Dots means it needs to read Dots. If you are unsure, please please contact me before sending. There are some very good examples listed in the 5” Neutral Theme thread from last month.

2. You may swap up to 12 bags with 15 different 5" square charms in each bag. Send the kind you hope to receive. Only send 100% quilting cotton squares!

Do Not Send: thin fabrics, homespuns, dotted swiss, denim, flannel, polyester or polyester blends, eyelet, wool, linen, fleece, knit, broadcloth, seersucker, Etc. Only send 100% quilting cotton, please.

3. Take your time cutting and be sure you have correctly cut 5” squares. No one wants wonky squares

Cutting/Packaging Method:
We will be sending 15 Different fabrics in each bag we swap. All your bags can have the same mixture in them, or different, but you cannot repeat fabrics in any one bag. We will be swapping bag for bag, so there must be 15 different fabrics in each bag. Please put your board name & location on every bag you are swapping. For instance, "Redstilettos, West Bend, WI".

4. Put all your swap bags in one big ziplock then affix a tag on it that includes your name and mailing address, as well as your board name. That will keep them together in your package and if it happens to get torn open in shipment - your address will be there for the P.O. to return to you. Padded flat rate envelopes are the best shipping method, the paper ones have a tendency to break open. You can order the padded flat rate envelops from the post office online, in packages of 10, and they are free. The cardboard type seams to rip too often for them to be reliable.

5. Postage: It costs $7.25 to ship the padded flat rate envelop. Please include a USPS Money Order for $7.25 in your big ziplock to pay to return ship to you. Very well hidden cash or stamps are okay as well. I cannot ship back to you until I receive payment. No personal or company checks, please. Also, Please put your board name on the outside of your package. I don't open these until I am ready to distribute, and having your board name on the outside allows me to keep track of any I may be missing, or allow me to give feedback to you when your package has arrived.

6. If I receive All swaps early, distribution back to swappers will be early, too!
Let’s aim to be early! If I do not receive early, distribution happen by April 28th.

I’m looking forward to having you!

If you have questions, please PM me,
Thank you!
Red

JuanitaBean 04-03-2018 03:10 PM

I'm in for 12 ready to ship. Thanks red

Faintly Artistic 04-03-2018 04:47 PM

Red, could you give us a quick rundown of what's still in the hat? I know batiks, but what else is in the future? I know some have given suggestions for splitting batiks into colors or warm/cool...may I suggest just simply batiks for a couple of reasons? One, not everyone will have a large selection in their stash, and two, some of them have so many different colors In them, they could be both cool and warm in the same strip. Just a suggestion...

MaryMo 04-03-2018 05:08 PM

I'm in for the dots .... 10 sets for sure but more in there are more participants. I'm savoring all those dots!

These dots have got to be the secret to a real Spring and warmer weather.

.... and Faintly Artistic, I'm with you on batiks. How can I classify them other than batiks?

redstilettos 04-04-2018 05:03 AM

Morning ladies,
We're up to 9 participants thus far. We're on our way! Just a few more to join and we have no duplicates. Yay!

Faintly, I like your idea of batik's as a whole and not split out. If there is that much interest, we can always vote to have it thrown back in the hat.

I don't have my list in front of me, but I know we have browns, aqua, batiks, black background, anything goes, solids, holiday (but I am hesitant on this one), floral, stripes, rainbow, and....why is my mind blank? I'm open to adding anything to the hat which we feel there'd be enough interest. That includes finishing the list and starting to repeat colors already chosen. Try me. I'm easy. Okay, okay, I'm not easy. But I am easy going :D

sunrise450 04-04-2018 05:48 AM

Count me in for 12. Will be cutting and mailing in the next few days. Yeah! I am so excited about this swap.

hav4boys 04-04-2018 09:29 AM

In for 12 and they should be on your doorstep today.

Morning folks,

Months ago I created the color theme swap and have seen much success and great fabrics sent from one end of the country to another. It’s been fun for me, and hope it has for you, too! Since the inception, I’ve had a lot of requests to do “this” color next, or don’t ever do “that” color or I won’t join, etc. I’ve tried to keep the swap the way I had intended, by drawing colors at random so it is fair and not geared more towards any one particular person’s request. Sometimes we get the same people, sometimes different ones, and sometimes they drop out for other reasons…but we’ve always had more than the minimum amount of swappers, so we don’t get duplicates back. Nice!

What are your thoughts on the process? Would you rather I take a vote during each swap for the next color? We’ve already done Blue, Purple, Pink, Orange, Red. We have all KINDS of things remaining: Yellow, Aqua, Brown/Tan, White/Cream/Neutral, Black & White, Floral, Polka Dots, Brights, Civil War, floral, Black Background, White Background, Batiks, Pastels, Sewing Motifs, Animals, Children’s theme, Primary Colors, Holidays….the list is long ladies. If we do change it over to a vote, I would do so in the room and not via PM, with each participant getting one vote each. No commentaries along with it, just….one single vote. I suggest this so it is transparent to everyone. “Whatever the rest decides” is not a vote. Hehehe.

Your call. Vote? Or Keep drawing out of the hat?
Thoughts? Comments?

(Quote from the "Red" swap thread, post #62, 11/15/17)

Is this the list that we're still going by? I've been pre-pulling my fabrics for them, because I probably won't have full access to my fabric stash once we put our house on the market. Actually, quite a few things have already been put in storage. (Nothing like suddenly needing a kitchen item that you haven't used in 6 months! LOL! ;)) If I remember correctly, I think "Children's" fabric was decided against, since it would be so similar to the I-Spy swaps. :)

Looks like solids, anything goes, stripes, and rainbow have been added, as per the post in this thread. What about 1930's repro fabrics? :)

I'll get my Polka Dots in the mail in the morning. Meant to today, but we had some storms and nasty wind come through early this morning, and it knocked our power out and nearly ripped our storm door off the hinges. It mangled the automatic-door-closer-thingy at the top of the door. Could've been a lot worse, though. We live on the edge of some woods ... mostly tall pines ... and it's a miracle none of the trees were blown over. There were several down nearby, though, causing some road closures while the mess was cleaned up. :(

Faintly Artistic 04-04-2018 01:50 PM

Wow, moonrise, the SE has gotten more than it's fair share of weather lately! That makes my most recent oops seem small in comparison. I went to cut last night, I have all my fabric on shelves and most of my "stuff" put away in the studio and CANNOT find my rotary cutter! I've looked everywhere 2 or 3 times. It and my favorite pair of jeans disappeared during the move. The jeans I can live without, it's already 90+ in Arizona; but the rotary cutter is something entirely different! Will be making a trip this evening to pick up a new one... Of course, it will turn up right after I toss the receipt for the new one...

Fizzle 04-05-2018 04:22 AM

Moonrise, thanks for posting that! I didn’t join in until February so I had not seen it. Red, I like everything you had to say. Random drawing is good. It would be a mess trying to get a color everyone wants to participate with. While my first thought was to not participate when civil war fabrics are drawn because I have none, second thought is what a great way to get a good variety. Hopefully we can join in when we can and be gracious about passing when we can not. I for one really appreciate Red donating so much time to make this happen. I think it is fun and this is a good way to get a feedback score which allows participation in other “games” “swaps” etc on this board. Thank you...

redstilettos 04-05-2018 07:44 AM

Moonrise, I'm with you, weatherwise. Several inches of snow (will it EVER end? LOL). But at least our power wasn't knocked out. I'm thankful for that. I kinda like having heat when it's crummy outside. LOL.

Faintly: We won't see 90 degrees here until about July. Maybe I need to visit you over the winter. Got any good quilting stores I should frequent there? ;)

Fizzle, we are happy to have you join! Yes, juggling and trying to keep everyone interested and happy can be interesting at times, but I love the women I have met here on the board, so it isn't a hardship for me at all. Besides, it feeds into my need to "pet" pretty fabric, so who's complaining?!?!

I do hope we can keep the board growing and moving again. We've gained some new folks, and lost some old, but I'm hoping the charm swap can keep its head above water and always have enough swappers involved where we don't have to worry about having duplicates.

I have already received two packages: Crispy and Hav4's baggies have landed on my doorstep. My poor mailman must be dying wondering what I'm "buying" all the time. I may have to bake him some cookies or something :D

Faintly Artistic 04-05-2018 08:33 AM

Red, you would love it here in the winter! Summer, not so much...maybe I'll come visit you when it hits 120! I am a die hard bargain shopper, so I love SAS fabrics in Tempe. Designer quilt cottons for $4/yard, can't beat that! A few of us AZ gals are going to meet and hit the big SAS in Phoenix tomorrow, then lunch. Wish all y'all could join us!

Keep on with the hat method, it's fair and neutral and nobody gets their feelings hurt! I will be cutting mine today, even though there are still some boxes and organizing that needs to be done...

Crispy_Frog 04-05-2018 09:55 AM

I'm sorry but I just have to get this out there. It has been on my mind since this polka dot swap started. I hummed it while I cut and sorted all my charms this month:

"....she wore an itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini....that she wore for the first time today....."

And that is the only possible cultural reference I can come up with for polka dots! No other songs, book titles or movies!

Thanks for letting me get that off my mind.

Texastam 04-05-2018 01:44 PM

I am going to have to look through my stash to see if I have that many polka dots.

I can't wait until you do batiks...I have plenty of those.
Plenty of florals, aquas, pinks, purples, blues and greens.
What about novelty, autumn or fall, red, white and blue?

Batik 54 04-05-2018 02:17 PM

I would like to participate. I have never done anything like this before, I hope I do it correctly. I think I will probably do 10.

Faintly Artistic 04-05-2018 04:47 PM

Welcome batik54! Just read the rules and you should be fine😉. This is an easy going group and I look forward to getting my charms every month.

Crispy_Frog 04-05-2018 07:17 PM

Hi Batik45! You came to the right place! There are some very dedicated and talented quilters here. It is fun!

Crispy_Frog 04-05-2018 07:19 PM

And I got the name wrong. Sorry, Batik 54!

JuanitaBean 04-05-2018 10:02 PM

Hi! Batik 54 welcome to are group you are going to love this swap and love the charms. All the ladies are great.

redstilettos 04-06-2018 05:10 AM

Welcome Batik. I responded to your email, with the mailing information. We're super happy to have you!

If you have any questions after reading the instructions, please ask. Lots of us here have been at this a long time, and we can all help you out. Do you have plans for your goodies, or are you just "testing the waters" so to speak?

For me? I think I'm a fabric hoarder. But I do have plans for these. Eventually. Some Day. Yes. Some day :D

djmat 04-06-2018 01:25 PM

Just popped by to see how y'all are doing. Not enough dots to participate, but hopefully next swap. Have 3 quilts ready bind, yippee! Will post when I can.
"Beer Barrel Polka"
Roll out the barrel, we'll have a barrel of fun!
Roll out the barrel, we've got the blues on the run....
Now's the time to roll the barrel, the gang's all here!
that's all I can remember!
hugs,
dj

Jane Quilter 04-06-2018 01:44 PM

Hey Batik 54, Since this is your first swap, I wanted to offer you a swap tip: one fat qtr cuts into 12 charms. I saw you chose "probably 10". Some swappers choose 11 so they can keep 1 stack for themselves. 10 might leave you with a strange leftover sized scrap. But it is up to you. I've participated in all of Red's swaps and they go well, and the ladies always swap nice fabric with different taste which really adds variety to your charm collection. You will love this group. Welcome to the swap!

Crispy_Frog 04-06-2018 01:46 PM

Hey DJmat- love that you are getting your Polka on!

MaryMo 04-06-2018 04:16 PM

Yea DJmat! so glad you brought some sunshine to the swap. I've missed that. I like dancing the polka in a polka dot dress so keep bringing them on .....

pinkflowers 04-07-2018 04:43 AM

Red - If you didn't know already, I'm in for 12 baggies. I just realized now that a new thread was started for the dottie swap. I'll start cutting today!

Have an idea for you...
Spread the love (of quilting, that is) to your mailman and make him a coaster or two from our charms.

Have a great day, everyone!

redstilettos 04-07-2018 07:45 AM

Welcome again pink flowers! I always love your humor here :)

And great idea for the postman !!

redstilettos 04-09-2018 04:26 PM

Come on ladies, plenty of time to join yet....Hoping for a few more so we don't have duplicates! :)

Any ideas how to drum up more swappers?

Faintly Artistic 04-10-2018 10:56 AM

My 12 baggies are cut, bagged, and ready to be mailed in the morning. Hope y'all enjoy them! Looks like we have 14, possibly 15 swappers this time if I'm counting correctly...

pinkflowers 04-10-2018 01:37 PM

My 12 baggies were shipped out yesterday. Had fun cutting and putting them together - polka dots just make me happy! :)

Jane Quilter 04-10-2018 07:11 PM

Im in. Count me too, Faintly!

redstilettos 04-11-2018 05:40 AM

Yay! We are up to 14 swappers. No duplicates....love that!

I am going to dream of circles and dots and polkas. Without the accordians ;)

redstilettos 04-11-2018 08:44 AM

Did anyone see this thread on the Pictures page? It's an adorable quilt using dots :)

https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...a-t296096.html

RJLinkletter 04-11-2018 09:32 AM

I don't have enough dots to join in this time but can't wait to join in moving forwards (especially if Batiks comes up soon!) I have just bought a 5" square die for my sizzix machine so can quickly cut charms squares as well!

MaryMo 04-11-2018 09:45 AM

Love that quilt made of dots, dots and more dots .... so inspiring! Guess I'll have to go out and buy more dots to make something like that. Thanks, Red, for the motivation.

sunrise450 04-11-2018 11:04 AM

DH just came home from the post office. My dots are on their way to you! Package should get to Red by this Friday. PM me if you need the tracking #.
