good morning ladies.

Prayers to all our quilting buddies on the east coast in the path of the current hurricane Florence. Stay safe

Janice McC 09-11-2018 05:09 AM

Ditto on what Lstew said. Looks like we don't have any Carolina birthday swappers per Barb's post (1507) but there are a several in VA, MD and NY. It appears the storm will actually pull in cooler, dryer weather in GA so that's a good thing for us. Be well, everyone.

So when I was told that I was making this T-shirt quilt and thought ......oh no I don't want to do that!!!! I contacted someone who commissions to do them. She said it would be around $500.00 (that includes quilting) plus supplies.

I am going today to my mom quilt group and some ladies are going to get me started. They are working on one now. Wish me luck.

Today is September 11th.

Such a sad day in our lives. A day that has changed my life forever in the way I look at the world. After 9-11 I joined the American Red Cross and was later deployed to NYC. I was stationed out there in Feb/March of 2002. I worked as a mental health worker. So many months after the attacks, and the city was still in shambles, it looked, smelled and felt like a war zone. Some of the people I helped STILL had not come out of their apartment since that day. I think of these people often, I wonder how they are doing today.

I hope that everyone takes just a moment of your day to think about the lives that were lost, but mostly about the lives that went on without their loved ones. That is the true tragedy.

Mystery Completed

4 Attachment(s)
I finally finished quilting the mystery quilt. I put a 6" pieced border all around to make it larger. I used my abundance of lights. At first I didn't think I would like the lights, but now that it is finished, the border doesn't compete with the strong center design which is good.

The pieced border took longer than the whole rest of the mystery quilt. I kept asking myself "what were you thinking?"

I regret using polyester batting. It was harder to quilt with all of the poofiness. I couldn't get rid of the wavy border no matter what I tried. (The picture doesn't look very wavy, but I straightened it into submission before taking the picture.

The back was pieced with large squares of scraps.

Thank you for the mystery Barb! This was alot of fun... :)

barbarakibler23 09-11-2018 09:31 AM

Jenn. Your quilt is beautiful.

How larger does it measure now?

I finished the Birthday Swap Mystery Quilt last evening. Now to try and upload a photo. Here goes.

Well this looks too small. I will try the resize thing again. But none the less..... it is finished! :o
Finished at 58 X 78. Now to upload some other finishes from this year using my 2.5 candies.

#2 is my version of the Mystery Train #18 quilt. Used about 260 of our little 2.5 inch squares.

SheriR, I love, love, love your border. What a fine way to use more of our little treats. You must have gone well beyond the 500 estimated for the quilt. Congrats. (PS. Your envelope arrived yesterday and in plenty of time. I will add you to m lisyt in a few days.)

givio 09-11-2018 05:11 PM

Good morning Ladies!
All Septembr envelopes are in the mail. Sorry for the delay, hand surgery in August put me a little behind.

lum 09-13-2018 05:49 PM

I put my last package for September in the mail today.

SheriR 09-13-2018 08:48 PM

JENN, I'm in love with your quilt. More candy in the border is a great addition. I love WMU's too! The dark border is so striking. Maybe I'll get to work on mine tomorrow. I only have two side borders to add. My GD picked a backing for it. She says it's her "at grandmas house surprise quilt" (her word for mystery)

Lstew2212 09-14-2018 03:17 AM

Loving the photos of the completed mystery quilts. I'm making mine for my aunt for a wedding present. I'm getting great ideas for the borders.

WMUTeach 09-15-2018 12:45 PM

Well once I started to measure and pin my last two side borders didn't take but a few minutes to sew. I had a straight photo, but all y'all have seen it straight and gosh but aren't my quilt holders cute! I only added a 4.5" border because that's how much fabric I had. I'm shooting to get it quilted this next week. Fingers crossed.

Another Finish using 2.5 birthday treats

1 Attachment(s)
Well this top has been sitting about long enough to be a UFO but I finished the quilting this past week and the binding last night. I have been on the roll to use up all my birthday treats before my birthday on Tuesday. Won't meet my goal but I will keep finishing the tops I have done this 2018 year.

This one I have named "9 X 2.5" and it will be donated when the the right opportunity pops up. Two more tops are sandwiched and awaiting my quilting and finishing. :o

OK it is sideways and I don't know how to change it. Correct in my saved file. Technology help is needed. Thank goodness for this quilt, .... it does not matter. Tee-Hee-Hee.:D

givio 09-16-2018 02:24 PM

SheriR, Yes, the quilt holders make the quilt look better. Love the green background! But green is my favorite color. It's so refreshing to see a background that is not the usual neutral colors. :-)
WMUTeach, Your quilting is very nice on this one! I like the light thread on the dark background.

barbarakibler23 09-16-2018 06:35 PM

Love all the mystery quilts coming in!!!! Makes me so happy to see the finished product! I have decided what I am going to do to finish my mystery. I will post a photo when it is completed.

WMUTeach...........you are rocking all the quilts out!!! You are amazing! I think our candy square quilts make some pretty happy quilts. Are you making a dent in you candy collection?

WMUTeach 09-16-2018 06:38 PM

Other than the fun of the puzzle of a mystery quilt, I love seeing how we all use different background and end up with such unique finishes. I have 5 of those charming quilt holders too! They many any quilt look better.:o

WMUTeach 09-16-2018 06:51 PM

Barbara, I have made a BIG "dent". Since January, I think I have used about 3000, with another 1000 or so left. Not all are from the swap but most are. I have been diligent to cut scraps from my quilts into standard sizes, including 2.5s. Three more tops, one of which is sandwiched, have been made this year. Oh, and I have a second version of our mystery partially finished, forgot about that. Tee-Hee, will it ever end? Nope and I am glad my fabric is still multiplying when I turn off the lights and close the door. It gives me lots of opportunities to share quilts with others.

I am so glad I joined this swap and have kept swapping year after year. What fun it has been! I have found a passion for these little treats. Thanks, Barbara.

Happy Birthday!!! WMUTeach Hope your having a Great Day

WMUTeach 09-18-2018 12:09 PM

Thank you for all the good wishes and sweet treats sent for my special day. I dashed home from teaching my morning class today and went directly to the mailbox. Then I scampered inside to my basket of envelopes and began opening all of the treasures. What fun! Surprises and so many beauties!

I think I will do as one of this group did last year and make a quilt with each square being pieces from one of the participants. I have a pattern in hand (wink, wink) that will work beautifully. This will be a good use of 2.5s and will still give me plenty of left-overs for other projects.

trish b 09-18-2018 01:09 PM

Happy Birthday WMUTeach, I think you have a great idea for another CANDIES quilt. Will love to see it when you finish. Hope all your day is as fun as opening birthday cards has been.
