Ahwu, it sounds like a very rough couple of weeks for you and your daughter. I’ll keep her in my thoughts for a swift recovery. Hugs.

ibex94 09-16-2021 05:11 AM

Ahwu, sick kids are the worst! You want to make them better and you just have to hurry up and wait. I'm glad it wasn't covid. There are tons of non-covid respiratory viruses running around Mississippi. The kids in daycare love to share them. As soon as your child can get back to school, it won't be a problem catching up. Young minds are so fast at learning! I hope you're eating lots of chicken soup in the meantime to keep up your strength! Worrying about our kids takes a lot out of us!

Moonwork -- that's beautiful! Please accept my condolences for your dad. Treasured memories to tie into a quilt! Thank you for showing it to us! I am glad you pulled it out and started up with your quilting again!

sewbizgirl 09-16-2021 07:59 AM

Congrats on another grandbaby on the way, Janice! More fun.

Congrats on selling your house, Terri. One big thing off your mind.

Ahwu, so sorry your daughter has been sick. Hope she's back to normal again soon.

Moonwork, I remember you! You were one of the Boom "moons". As I recall we had several moons in various forms for a couple of years. Good to hear from you. Very sorry your Dad passed.

My granddaughter is two and in preschool 5x a week. She has had one sickness after another. Preschool is like a germ bank.

We are looking at closing on our second house in two weeks from yesterday. Doesn't seem real... We have spare furniture inherited from my parents, so we won't need too much to outfit the house. Just a washer, dryer, fridge, lawnmower and vac! Ha ha.

terriamn 09-16-2021 03:21 PM

Moon work great to hear from you and I love your quilt. Sorry about your Dad’s passing

Ahwu so sorry your little one has been so sick, sure hope she gets healthy quickly

Sewbiz good thing you have most of your furniture. The lead time is terrible on most brands

Janice I took a large tote with me today to a gathering of quilters. It was filled with swap blocks. I removed everyone’s names, divided into style of block and colors. Two gals took them all. They were 6;5” hour glass blocks, 9 patches, mini blocks and lots more. No boom blocks. These are from years ago and I know they will never finished by me. The company that is installing my sewing floor is backed up and I think we might have to look elsewhere.

Janice McC 09-17-2021 02:17 PM

Terriamn, I’m glad your blocks have gone to people who will turn them into quilts or other items. So much better than having them go unused. Good for you.

juliasb 10-04-2021 04:53 AM

I just got home yesterday from the hospital with COVID. I was there for 2+ weeks and am as weak as a new born kitten. I am sitting at my computer right now as I must sit up even when I don't feel like it for at least an hour at a time. I am getting by with a walker to and from the bed and bathroom, and now here. The Home Health Nurse was here yesterday and PT and OT will begin today to help me get my strength back. A friend went grocery shopping for us yesterday and we are all set for at least a month now. I will be using a lot of canned food until I can cook again. Fortunately I am vaccinated so it could have been much worse. I don't want to go through this again.
When I came in here and saw all my blocks sitting here I wanted to pick them up and play with them but quickly realized I didn't have the strength. I am hoping to be back on my feet independently soon.
This has been a crazy 2 months. Losing my sister and BIL then losing my mother the end of Aug and spending the majority of Sept in the hospital with COVID. I am still testing positive for COVID right now. The docs said I could test positive for 3 months but should be disease free in another 2 weeks.
I missed everyone.

ibex94 10-04-2021 05:40 AM

Dear Juliab, I am so sorry! Thank goodness you have gotten out of the hospital and can find comfort surrounded by your own things. It sounds like you have everything set up to be easy on yourself and that is wonderful! I wish I was there to bring you some chicken soup. The fatigue from the virus is the worst once your breathing improves (which it sounds like you are okay with breathing -- yay!!).

Typical of a virgo, I am obligated to give you my advice. I am NOT a doctor. I don't know what medications you might be taking. If you are taking nothing, these vitamins and supplements might help. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before you take any of these if you are on medication.

For the unmedicated you, keep on (or start) taking vitamin D3, zinc (on a full stomach), lysine (another antiviral supplement), and B12 (to help energy increase). Turmeric is a wonderful anti-inflammatory that may help keep your viral load down and speed healing. I drink a green tea with turmeric that I pick up from the grocery store. Green tea is great to keep your stomach healthy and keep bad bacteria loads down in there while you are in a weakened state!

Stay away from sugars as much as possible (especially high fructose corn syrup and fake sugar) as they use up tons of energy to digest and process and your energy is needed to get your body up and functioning. Probiotics are great to let your intestines make more nutrients bioavailable to you, too.

And with prayers and patiences, before you know it, you'll be up and patting your new blocks! I am praying for a rapid recovery for you! You certainly have had a rough few months.

klaws 10-04-2021 07:08 AM

Julia, I am so sorry to hear of your illness. You have gone through so much the past few months. My thoughts and prayers are with you so that you recover quickly. (((Hugs)))

Janice McC 10-04-2021 11:48 AM

Julia, I’m sorry to hear you’ve been hospitalized but am so happy you are home now recuperating. Please be sure to rest as much as possible and don’t overdo anything. Please keep in touch and let us know how you are progressing. Hugs.

terriamn 10-05-2021 04:26 AM

Julia I am so sorry you are battening Covid but thankful you are recovering. Please take eye time to emotionally and physically heal

juliasb 10-05-2021 05:04 AM

The COVID pneumonia is clearing up slowly. It still hurts to breath on my right side. I just have to go slowly. I am using a walker right now to get around with and that is also a slow process. As much as I want to stay in bed it is necessary for me to be sitting up. So that I do for as long as I can. Yes, it has been a rough couple months but we are all getting through this together. My sisters have been taking care of the two different estates and things are winding up on both of those things. My being sick has just added another concern for everyone. It is great to be home. I am taking a few added vitamins and minerals right now to help get my strength built back up. I started my PT yesterday and OT today. I can't wait until I have the strength to stand at my cutting table and get back to some quilting. I have a block that is partially sewn together that has been there now close to 2 months. Thanks for all the kind thoughts.

annt59 10-05-2021 05:11 PM

Juliab, sorry for all your trouble. It is good to hear that you are now recovering at home.

sewbizgirl 10-05-2021 08:45 PM

Juliab, good to hear from you. So sorry for all you have been through but it sounds like you are on the road to recovery now. I pray you get stronger, day by day.

Just a quick check in to see how you all are and if anyone is working on their Boom blocks. Me, I’m putting together some string blocks made when I was too frazzled with the house sale and move to do anything else. Pic of my progress is below. The house is sold now, yay! We’re pretty well settled into the new place but my sewing room remains a mess. I’m working in it anyway.

Be well and happy, Boomers!

terriamn 10-17-2021 05:22 AM

Fun blocks Janice, love how your smashing really sets off the blocks.Glad you are settled in and old house is sold

No sewing for me yet but the sewing room is coming together. We bought a couple dressers from IKEA and they were not the ones we wanted. Dh had partially put together one before I saw it and said oh no. He suggested putting it in sewing room under my cutting table. It fits perfectly, talk about feeling lucky. The room with all my bulk fabric and accessories is still in chaos but working on it a bit everyday. Can’t wait to start sewing again

ibex94 10-17-2021 10:32 AM

Lovely strings, Janice! Yay to the house being sold! It looks like all our boomers are getting their ducks in a line with health and home and working on the BOOM blocks is likely to start after Halloween. I don't know when I'll be working with my BOOM blocks. Does that surprise anyone? Quilty hugs, all!

sewbizgirl 10-17-2021 08:14 PM

Great string quilt, Janice. The sashings really set it apart.

Congrats on selling your house. I'm actually writing from my new house in Memphis. It's great to have the hard work done. Now I don't have to lift anything heavier than a paintbrush!

I'm loving this cooler weather. Hope all are well....

terriamn 10-18-2021 04:19 AM

Congratulations Sewbiz on being in your new home. Do you have a sewing room in Mephis?

I hope everyone is on the road to recovery. Take care of yourself my boom sisters. I’d love to see pictures of the new homes!

I started the 365 100 day organizing project. It gives you a small task to do every day. I’m about halfway through. I figure it will take 150 days to organize the house because we’ve been here for 30 years and the house has more bedrooms and bathrooms then the program budgets for. I think I’m mostly motivated because I paid for the program and I feel guilty if I dont do it. My daughter told me I could pay her instead. and she’d send me jobs.

I dipped my toe into making baby clothes and made reversible jackets for my twin granddaughters. How hard could it be? A Butterick easy pattern, on sale flannel. Hah! I found out my workhorse Janome makes lousy buttonholes. Apparently a known problem. Quilts are easier than baby clothes! We visit the Omaha kids next week.

im back to quilting now working on an applique peacock.

Thank you so much for the beautiful card you sent to me. I definitely made my day! I too am working on a string quilt. Like everything else it has been on hold while I recover. I had OT this morning and am waiting on the PT to get here shortly. I am doing better today than ever, even though I still have a long way to go. I am getting ready to go to the dr. on Wed. That will be a major feat.
I have not started anything with my boom blocks as of yet but it is on my quilting list of things to do.

juliasb 10-18-2021 07:19 AM

Thanks for all the kind thoughts as prayers as I recover from this horrible virus. COVID is not going to get the better of me. Today is my best day yet and I am making major progress according to the OT.
Quilting and any kind of sewing however are not yet on my list of things to do. I am still a bit weak for all the back and forth. But when I can look out world. Right now I am still working on trying to cook simple meals or even clean up in the bathroom a bit. I am getting there though. It is all slow. My vitals are not quite as consistent as they should be and they are being monitored closely, but I am getting there. I can barely wait until I can sew and quilt again. Look out world when I am able!

Good evening. Just a drop in to say hello. Hope everyone is feeling well now or at least improving in health. I’m well and glad for it.

Been busy getting the house finished up for my son and his dgf who will be visiting next month from KS. Until yesterday, there were still boxes in the guest room but they’re finally put away. Yay. Am still not thrilled with my sewing room but am very slowly making progress on my string quilt top. See below. (Not final layout by any means and my apologies for poor lighting.) I’ve got a top thread breakage issue I never had until after the machine was serviced earlier this year. Have tried everything I can think of but it continues. I’m about to give up on her. I cannot imagine what has changed!

That’s it for me. Have a pleasant rest of your weekend.

terriamn 10-31-2021 06:37 AM

Great string quilt Janice, the lattice design you chose is perfect with the blocks

All is well here also, Enjoying our new home and life outside of the city. Not totally unpacked yet but getting there

ibex94 10-31-2021 07:00 AM

I like your string quilt!! Good luck figuring out what is going on with your machine. Bad spool of thread, perhaps?

travelinggramma 10-31-2021 12:28 PM

Janice - you need to have Terri make over your sewing room - hers could be in a Sewing Room Dream Magazine!
I just pulled 12 string blocks that were in my drawer and put them together to make a topper for my washer and dryer. Yours looks great - love the sashing.

terriamn 11-01-2021 04:54 AM

Thanks TG, I do absolutely love my room and looked at tons of pictures online through the years to get ideas. But the main thing is you need to have the room. Only thing left to do in there is some kind of fold up or retractable design wall. If anyone has any suggestions would love to hear them

travelinggramma 11-01-2021 07:43 AM

I have flannel on a long shade. wish I had room for a second one

Janice I love your string quilt! I started cutting strip for a string quilt before I came down with covid. Right now I have only been back at the sewing machine 1x. I made an oven mitt that I have not even finished. Most of my days are still filled with PT and OT. In about 3 weeks I will be discharged from home to outpatient therapies. PT just pulled in the driveway. So I am off to the races.

Janice McC 11-01-2021 10:56 AM

It’s an Aurofil and I never have trouble with it but a bad spool is a thought. I’ll try switching it out. Thanks!

Janice McC 11-01-2021 11:17 AM

Thanks for the nice comments about the string quilt. I don’t like the tediousness of the 3 1/2 inch unfinished 9 patches but they’re coming along.

Terriamn, your quilt room is just about my ideal! I’m frustrated by the size of mine despite constant self-reminders to be grateful to have what I have. I need to keep working on organizing and my attitude. FYI, my design wall is pink wall insulation foam boards, very inexpensive, covered with a piece of queen size batting. I have two side by side and I just adhere the batting with a few pins in the edge and lean it ever so slightly against the wall. It goes up in ten minutes and down in less. The only thing I’ll do in the future is change out the batting for a piece of flannel so I can pop it in the wash to help get rid of the inevitable threads.

Just back from half a day with the grand while her folks worked. What a little person she is becoming! Such fun!

juliasb, am glad for the more positive news about your recovery.

Happy November!

Janice McC 11-07-2021 04:23 AM

Good morning! It’s a cold NC morning but wonderfully clear. Hope it is a pleasant day where you are.

I’ve rounded the bend on the units for on my string quilt. Hope to finish them this week.

I’m still planning to begin the next Boom after the first of next year but I have no particular dates set. I’ll try to work on that in the coming week and post it here to give you a heads up.

Have a lovely Sunday.

klaws 11-11-2021 08:03 AM

Just checking in to say howdy! I hope everyone is having a good November so far. I am trying to get my "mojo" back and work on some UFOs that I really have to do something with. The weather here has been unseasonably warm but we are expecting rain/snow this weekend. I hate seeing that stuff come. Maybe if it is cold outside, I will want to stay warm and do some quilting. Let's hope, right???

Janice McC 11-12-2021 03:50 AM

Howdy, Klaws! So nice to hear from you. 😀. I think cold weather is a good mojo booster, unless like me, you want to snuggle under a quilt rather than build one! I’m a little stuck now, so close to the finish on my string quilt units and yet I’m not working on them this week. I could use a little boost myself.

Hope everyone has had a pleasant week. Stay warm if you’re in the path of cold weather this weekend.

Janice McC 11-18-2021 09:39 AM

Am soooo behind posting dates for the next boom. It’s been busy around here! Will try to get to it soon.

No rush Janice! I'm sure everyone is busy getting ready for the holidays and not really worried about it. We'll look forward to it after the first of the year.
Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you enjoy your family.

ibex94 11-19-2021 06:29 AM

Hi all. Happy Thanksgiving! Klaws is right, Janice, I am still working on so may of my UFO BOOM projects I can't allow myself to think to the next one. Quilty hugs to all from my home to yours!

sewbizgirl 11-19-2021 06:51 AM

I have finally finished my fruity Boom quilt, all but the binding which will go on today. It ended up looking very Christmassy, so I'm keeping it and taking it to my new house this weekend. Will show a pic later today!

juliasb 11-19-2021 11:35 AM

To everyone here a safe and joyous holiday with Thanksgiving upon us so quickly. Eat hearty and share when and where ever possible with family, friends and the alone. Be filled with the love that the season brings out in us. To each a blessed holiday.

Here is my finished Boom 26 quilt. I love it! Thank you everyone who made a block for it. They are great! It's going to my new house in Memphis with me tomorrow. It was going to be a charity quilt, but I love it and just need to keep it! One for me....

ibex94 11-20-2021 12:53 PM

Sewbizgirl - that is a beauty! It did come out really perfect for the holidays. I am glad you're going to hold onto it for a while. You brought it together so beautifully! Perfect choice of binding. Did you quilt as you go or make the flimsy and then quilt?
