Boom 29 Sign Ups closing March 22
Welcome to the sign up for the Boomerang 29 Block swap! Sign ups close no later than 11:59 pm EDT, Wednesday March 22, 2023. Each group will probably have 12 to 20 swappers. You may choose the 2 or 3 month swap or both if you are a repeat Boomer in good standing. All skill levels are welcome but you must be able to consistently sew a well-constructed 12 ½ inch block.
Deadline for your fabrics to be in my hands is March 31. In general, this is how the Boom works: You will receive a list of Board Names of those in your group. You choose your fabric, prepare it and send it to me for distribution to the other members. You need one Fat Eighth (no smaller than 18” x 10”, a little larger is welcome but no selvages) for each member. Send all F8s to me along with any special requests for your fabric. I will distribute them to the other members. You stitch a block for each member using your pre-washed 100 percent cotton quilting fabric out of the F8 you receive. When you have finished all blocks, you ship them to me to sort and return to the owner. Board participation is an essential ingredient in making this swap successful. So much information about the swap is found there, much more than I can possibly write in this sign-up post. If you wish to join the swap, please understand it is your responsibility to read all posts and post at least weekly. If something comes up and you cannot post, please have somebody email me. Absolutely no disappearing please! Don't 'ghost' the host! Anticipated schedule: Sign-ups end 11:59 pm EDT, Wed, March 22, 2023 Groups likely post by Thurs. March 23, 2023 ALL F8s due to me by Friday March 31, 2023 I ship F8s to you no later than April 3, 2023-- sooner if all fabrics come in sooner 2 month group’s blocks due to me by May 31, 2023 I mail 2 month group’s blocks back no later than June 1 3 month group’s blocks due to me by June 30, 2023 I mail 3 month's blocks back no later than July 1, 2023. Keep in mind the following: You must be in good standing with previous swaps on the QB. Anyone with a poor track record of fulfilling swap commitments will not be permitted to join. If you sign-up and do not fulfill your commitment, you won’t be able to participate in future swaps with me. All skill levels are welcome but you must be able to sew a 12 ½ inch, basic, well-constructed block. The block does not have to be detailed but it must be stitched well. All seams should be ¼ inch or a scant ¼ with at least 12 stitches per inch. All fabric should be cut on the straight of grain to avoid "wonkiness" and fraying whenever possible. Blocks should not leave your hands until you know you have made every reasonable effort to get them as close to the 12 ½ inch size as you can. We all respect new quilter’s need to learn and that will be taken into account. If you cannot consistently construct a 12 ½ inch block, this is not the swap for you. Please note: when you measure, measure your block under an acrylic square at least 12 ½ inches square, not on top of it, squaring the block on a corner after pressing. Also, be sure to allow yourself enough time to complete your full set of blocks. In other words, don’t leave them to the last week! The results can be less than your "best". And please be sure to clean up the blocks. Turn them over, trim your threads and cut dog ears. If you used paper to piece your blocks, please remove that paper! No "crinkling" blocks, please! Please pre-wash your 100 percent cotton quilting fabrics without any fragrance residue. (No dryer sheets.)Please note that that some swappers may be smokers or have pets. If either is a problem for you, this isn’t the swap for you. Any and all complaints and problems must be addressed to me by Private Message (PM) or email to me at [email protected], and not in the swap threads. Thank you. To join Boom 29, please email me (not PM) with "Boom 29" in the subject line at [email protected] with the following info: Board Name Full Name Complete Address Best Phone Number (please specify cell, home or work) Email Address Have you fulfilled all your swap/exchange obligations on the QB in the past? *2 Month Group or 3 Month Group or both? (Newbies to the Boom should select only one group, preferably the 3 month group if you are unaccustomed to piecing on a deadline.) *Group lengths and group sizes are fluid and will be determined by sign-ups. You may be asked to adjust to fill vacancies as needed. If changing doesn’t suit you, you may withdraw at that time. Do you agree to post weekly to the swap thread and read all the posts? Thank you for your interest in Boom 28. We hope you'll join us! You will receive an email with more info on fabric prep and mailing once you sign up. READ EVERYTHING. : o ) |
Just sent my info to SBG for the 3 month group. Now I just need to pick out and prepare fabric for the swap, looking forward to playing with everyone's fabric and making blocks.

It's been a few years since I did a boom, but I loved them I'm thinking of joining the 3 month group, but I have a question. . I looked at the pumpkin group from your last boom & it looked like there were 8 people, but you made 19 blocks. I'm wondering how that works first? Did you give two fabrics then to work on or did you make two different blocks for the one fabric we send in?
|
Hi Muse! I hope you will join us... That pumpkin group was small so the members agreed to make 2 and sometimes 3 blocks for each person. But they got 2 or 3 different baggies of F8s. One F8 is given for one block.
|
I am so sorry that I will not be able to join in again. Because of my eyes, I had a hard time in the last boom. I have enjoyed being a part of the past booms and will truly miss it. I will check in often to see how things are going. Good luck to everyone! :-(
|
Klaws, we will miss your participation but totally understand your limitation. I do hope you visit often during the Boom and chime in on the conversation. You can still be part of this group!
|
Since the 2 month group was so small, I would have been happy with 9 or 12 blocks rather than the usual 20.
So. My question is: if the group number is small can we choose to make a smaller number of blocks? |
Hello Boomers,
I think I'm going to have to sit this boom out, so much going on. I'm retiring in June and getting married in August! I'll be sure to lurk and follow along with the beautiful blocks and the happenings in your lives. Hopefully I'll be back for Boom 30 |
Oh Jayne, what a happy time for you! Do visit often and chat!
Pet, you are never forced to double up blocks if a group is small. You can do the 9 or 12 or whatever you need. This applies to a group smaller than 20 only. |
Yippee! Duckling is back!
1. Terriamn 2. Cheesehead 3. Hav4boys 4. SusieQOH (newbie!) 5. All2Pieces 6. MonaG 7. LogCabin82 8. duckling |
I'm another previous Boom-er that can not participate this round but hopefully again with Boom 30! I promise to lurk, comment and enjoy all the beautiful blocks made! This truly is a fun group that I look forward to re-joining soon. The talent here is always unbelievable!
|
I sent my info in an email to Sewbizgirl. I would like to join the three-month group. Thanks for having me back. I always love this group.

I sent my info via email and want to let you all know I am so glad to return! I am especially happy to have some of the same folks who were in Pumpkin Boom 28. I would like to join the 3 month this time.

Thanks to all the Pumpkins Boom 28 who contributed blocks. The local Refugee Center found a Ukranian family right away and were really appreciative for all the anonymous quilters!
|
Great quilt Duckling and all you Pumpkins!!
|
Welcome back, Lstew2212!
Duck, what a beautiful quilt. You did a great job finishing it! I'll put your pic in the "finished quilts" album at Imgbb Boom 28. |
Hi! signed up for both groups 2 months and 3 months. annaquilts

Hi all, is there a theme or do we just choose fabrics of our liking?
Do we request certain colors or not a certain color? |
You decide what kind of quilt you want. It is easier to design a block if you know the planned quilt destination or color needs. Pick out your fabric to send to everyone and if you have specific needs like "all yellow" or "all black" so you end up with two-colored blocks, let everyone know in the note you send with your F8 fabric. In the last boom I sent a different fabric to everyone to make a quilt for my eldest granddaughter who prefers dark jungle colors. I included bright colors in the F8 because the jungle is loaded with a variety of colors. I told everyone what I plan on doing with the blocks and then cut the Boomers loose to do whatever their creative desires wanted. I had no color requests or theme requests. I got a bunch of wonderful jungle blocks.
Take a look at the pictures Sewbizgirl has posted to get an idea of the beautiful blocks the boomers have made. Her signature line has the link. BOOM 29 is shaping up to be an amazing boom, as usual. I will be lurking this time around as I have yet to put any of my boom blocks into a finished quilt. |
Thanks for that info, ibex.
I just have a couple of colors I don't like, that's why I asked. But sometimes I say that and then I see a quilt with colors I don't especially like and end up loving what I see! :) |
Hi Annaquilts! Glad to have you back in the Booms!
|
I would consider sending all different fabrics to be an advanced strategy. For a newbie doing their first Boom swap, please stick to just one fabric.
For your color notes, list any preferences and dislikes there. Some people say "use any color in the print"(of the focus fabric), and others may say "White on white only please". Someone else may ask for solids only, or tonal prints, or small prints that go with the focus fabric. And some others might say "no preference, use any colors/fabrics you think look good." So, it's totally up to you what you request to go with your focus fabric, but remember it is only a request. No one is bound to use the fabrics requested (tho most do.) |
As people sign up for this swap, I have been sending them additional info about packaging and sending F8s. I didn't want to devote too much time in this thread to that, so I have only sent that info out when people sign up. I may have not included my mailing address in the first few emails I sent, by accident. If you don't have my addy from last time, just pm me and I'll send it to you.
Hope you are all having fun picking out your fabric and getting it ready to send. Prepare 19 individually bagged F8s for each group. |
I am ready to make BOOM blocks. I absolutely love making them.
|
Me too, Hav.....
Anyone have any fabric to show yet? |
Hello y'all
Hi everyone!
It's been a long time since I was in a BOOM. I'm really looking forward to it. Not all my past blocks have made it to their final quilts, either. That's no excuse to not join another swap! Each big baggie with the various blocks and notes is precious to me. Now that I've retired maybe I'll have more time to sew things together. Congratulations to the new retiree and bride! Best of luck and life to you and your sweetie. Those with health issues, just hang in there. I hope you feel better soon. Eyes and hands can be such tricky things sometimes. Quilters - funny story. One is often encouraged to shop from one's stash. This time I did. I found 4 yards of fabric with the receipt still pinned to it. Evidently, I bought it in July of 2000! And the best part - it was priced at $2 a yard! Wow! Can you believe it? 4 yards of quality fabric for $8. The fabric and colors are still in prime shape, even though it's 23 years old. I've washed the yardage. Still need to press and cut the F8s, then it will be on the way to our fearless leader. |

Who else is sitting on the fence? Jump in! This is the most fun swap, ever. And with 3 months to get your blocks made, the time frame is easy. At this point, only 3 people have signed up to do both swaps (2 month and 3 month). If we end up with this few in the 2 month group, we will only do a 3 month group and those who wanted 2 groups will be allowed to enter the 3 month group twice (sending 19 F8s each of 2 fabrics). But, we still have 4 days to see what happens... |

I haven't picked my fabric yet... looking forward to doing so! |
Fence sitting.
|
I hope you come back, Pet! You were a very strong influence towards modern improv quilting last boom. Your blocks were amazing, and got others to "quilt outside the box". Don't sit on that fence too long!
