The link below is for the Churn Dash block swap. There is a picture tutorial with this. I have posted a pic of my finished 'simple' block. Guidelines are as follows: 100% cotton pre-washed fabric. 12 blocks the same. There are 4 fabrics used in this block. Center piece is your focus fabric - should be of a 'spring' theme. Flowers, butterflies, flower or tree buds, ladybugs, ANYTHING that speak SPRING to you. The frame is two different complimentary colors, the corner blocks , one of the complimentary colors and one accent color. You may add applique', or stitching or whatever you wish. No beads or crystals please. Since these blocks will be used by other quilters, please make sure your blocks are 12.5 x 12.5 UNFINISHED. Oh - that dreaded SCANT 1/4 INCH DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE. You may make as many sets of 12 as you wish. Sign up till Feb 20th, blocks due to me BY March 31. There is plenty of time to sign up and make these blocks. When ready for mailing, please pm me, I will send you my addy. You will need to send in a mailing label, and a $4.95 STAMP, NOT A METERED STAMP. I will return your blocks in a Flat Rate Padded envelope. I can get three sets in one envelope (I am a really good packer!) If you wish to join, please pm me, I will post your joining on the thread. Welcome back to those of you who have swapped with me before! For those of you who need to know the amounts of fabric required for 12 blocks, looking at MY sample, (for better clarification) Center focus fabric (floral) - 3/4 yard is sufficient, you may want to get 1 yard if you are skittish. Fabric #1 (light green) 3/4 yard - may get 1 yard again if you are skittish. Fabric #2 (red accent) 1/2 yard will be plenty. Fabric #3 (pink) 1/2 yard is plenty. All of these amounts are based on 40 inch wide fabric (it does shrink). If there are any problems, PLEASE pm me. Happy new quilting year to all of us!

Deb thinks I am joking about having the fabric for this block- I have wanted to do it for a couple years now :) Thanks for picking it

Deb watkins 01-03-2012 06:08 PM

Sharon, perfect, perfect, perfect!!!!! I LOVE it! Yes, use this and if the blocks are not identical, it doesn't matter. The theme of your focus is birds, surely speaks of spring to me.

bookworm 01-03-2012 06:11 PM

I might sign up.... I need to find some spring fabric first.

sharon b 01-03-2012 06:25 PM

Bookworm - there is plenty of ways to interpret spring :)

I just happen to have had this fabric for just this block for a couple years :) Like Deb said- birds , flowers, butterflies, "cute" bugs LOL - sorry no creepy bugs for me PLEASE

Deb watkins 01-03-2012 06:49 PM

CORRECTION -I recalculated the amounts, as I got looking, I realized that I was using a very conservative chart for the fabric amounts. Please plan on the corrected amounts for 12 blocks. The indicated amounts are sufficient, the amounts in ( ) are generous if you are prone to (as I am guilty of) misreading the lines and cut wrong. The focus fabric C - 3/4 ok, (1 yard). Color #1 - light green 1 yd (1-1/4yd). Color #2 - red 1/4yd for the corners only, 1/2 yd if you are adding a 4" applique' as I did. Color #3 - pink 2/3 yd (3/4yd). I apologize, it was as I was making the blocks that I realized the skimpy amounts.

Sharon, you and Deb sure make it tempting to join. I loved the Dresden swaps and Deb's coordination of them. Sigh some people are so well prepared. I need to see what I can do.

Kitsapquilter 01-03-2012 09:34 PM

This sounds like an easy enough block for me to do. I am in for this swap. I know I have spring time fabrics in my very large stash. I will PM you with my other info.

sharon b 01-04-2012 04:17 AM

Anna- LOL No really I have had this fabric for a couple years for this block ( well not this specific one) I saw another member do it with a focus fabric and it was so neat , but then you know how it goes .... never find time to get it done ... I love the extra stitching Deb did on the side of the block to fancy up the focus border fabric

Deb did you put a stabilzer behind the border before adding the stitching ?

Aww, Anna, we had a nice Dresden swap despite the threads that kept coming unraveled. Lots of time to make these blocks, and they are so much easier than the Dresdens. ANYTHING that says spring to you - birdhouses, crickets, flowers, honey bees......can jazz up the frame as I did, applique', WHATEVER!!!

Believe it or not ( you SHOULD trust me) no stabilizer. Just the fancy stitch on the Janome. And none on the butterfly either. Just slow and steady did the trick.

sharon b 01-04-2012 09:03 PM

Will have to see what stitches I might come up with that will match the birds and make it fancy like yours

sew1096 01-04-2012 11:03 PM

A quick question to see if I understand this. We send in 12 identical blocks per set and receive 12 mixed blocks back or identical?

sharon b 01-05-2012 04:27 AM

Sew1096- you send in 12 identical blocks and get one of yours and 11 different blocks back, one from 11 different members that sign up - does that make sense ?

Lori Peercy 01-05-2012 06:56 AM

Do they all need to be identical or can just the focal fabric be the same?

Krisb 01-05-2012 08:57 AM

I'm in. It's so much fun learn new blocks and maybe new techniques. Oh, but this one makes me wish I had an embroidery machine. Deep West of Ireland sigh.

Perfect sense. Thanks Sharon. I think I'll have to look through my fabric and see if I have something spring(y).

Shari, you can take a brightly colored piece of fabric and do some spring theme applique' (flowers, butterflies, (nice) bugs, birdhouses.....whatever....on it if that works better for you.

sharon b 01-07-2012 06:26 PM

Have my fabric washing as I type - can't wait to make my first block :)

Sadheart 01-07-2012 10:01 PM

Ok. For everyone to know I to have joined this swap. PM'd Deb. Looking forward to this one.

Sandra aka sadheart

sharon b 01-08-2012 06:47 AM

Welcome aboard Sadheart

Deb watkins 01-08-2012 06:57 AM

And Sunrise450 and Cuppy are in the swap as well! We are on our way to chase away winter as we churn into spring!

sunrise450 01-08-2012 10:59 AM

Do we have to stick to the pink, green, red colors? I can do this, no problem. I would like to pick my focus and then the colors that suround it.
Thanks Deb for letting me in this swap! I am so excited!

sharon b 01-08-2012 12:29 PM

Sunrise- You pick the colors you want to work with :) Mine I just happen to have the bird fabric waiting to do this block - the rest will be blue, green, yellow- Maybe LOL That is what makes this fun everyone picks out what they want

Thank you! I think this will be a very pretty quilt. I love your fabric. I have some similar but it is definatly Christmas fabric. darn.
Phyllis

sharon b 01-08-2012 02:57 PM

If we are good and nice Deb might do this one again for Christmas  But we better not push her for that just yet :) LOL

Deb watkins 01-08-2012 03:50 PM

Sharon, Sharon, Sharon....good thing you are a moderator or I would have to complain to one about your pushiness....actually, I am already thinking of another swap to introduce for summer. Sunrise, my colors were pink and green because that is what was most complimentary to the focus fabric that I choose. Your colors can be anything that goes with your theme of spring. And as for the winter block, I may use this, or tweak it a bit.....you just never know in which direction my mind will wander.....gee Sharon, I will let you know!

sharon b 01-08-2012 05:23 PM

LOL Deb- you should note that I said you Might do a Winter one , but we had to be nice first and wait

Deb watkins 01-09-2012 11:29 AM

Actualluy, I WAS thinking of a winter swap - but will keep it a secret for now as it is a little different.

SheriR 01-09-2012 12:54 PM

Well I for ONE enjoy your swaps Deb :-)

EmbQuilt 01-09-2012 01:42 PM

Deb, I'd like to join this swap too. But I think you need to add more money for postage as the rates are going up next week or so.

That is what I am hearing, so when I get the acutal amount for the FRE, I will make that notification, and also remind everyone when they pm me for the addy to send in the blocks. And welcome to yet ANOTHER Deb swap......shhhhhh.....I already have one set for summer and winter.....

Deb watkins 01-12-2012 05:20 AM

Checked with the PO yesterday, FRE that I use aregoing to be $5.30. Y I K E S.....but our blocks are protected from tearing and moisture, and I can get three sets in one FRE if need be. I didn't think to ask if there would be one stamp for this or if mulitple would be necessary. I will have definite answers before the blocks are due.

Lady_Paquette 01-12-2012 10:36 AM

This looks like fun. I wanna play too ^_^
