Deb posted these figures earlier:

I figured out the yardage. All of these are based on 40 width of fabric. Background - 7.5 square - you will get 5 squares per row, need to cut three rows of 7.5 equals 22.5 inches: Plus 2-1/8 x 16 strips (two needed per block) - you will get two strips per row, need 24 strips, you will need to cut 12 rows of 2.5 (give yourself a little leeway) equals 30 inches. 30+22.5 = 52.5 ....1-1/2 yard should be good. For safety insurance you may want to get 1-2/3 yard for background. This blocks shows only two colors - so based on that - yellow - you will get 5 blocks per row, need three rows = 22.5 =2/3 yard needed, may want to get 1 yard for safety insurance. Blue - you will get 2 strips per row, need to cut six rows = 1 yard, but I would get 1-1/4 yard, again for safety insurance. Now, if you want to put in two colors (split the blue) 2/3 yard of two different colors, and if you wanted to split the yellow as well - 1/2 yard of two colors would be plenty.

1-1/2 yd- background
For a 2 color pinwheel:
Color 1- 1yard
Color2- 1-1/4yard
OR
For a 4 color pinwheel:
2/3 of TWO colors and 1/2 of TWO colors

Hope I read that right.

And Island was having a concern about how hard it looked at first. Now she is turning them out right and left...That is why she is the leader of this swap!

islandwiz1 04-04-2012 11:28 AM

Sharon b and everyone else. It is really very easy if you follow the steps with the pictures. I love making them now. I was the same with the dresden plates and I made three sets on them. If I have enough background fabric I will do another one. The tri color one is for the swap. I have one with blueberries that I have to match to another fabric. But I
could always use three colors again. If you make a sample block you will be amazed on how easy it goes together. Now get busy and just have fun!!!!

Deb watkins 04-04-2012 12:37 PM

Spoken like a true LEADER!!!

QuilterMomma 04-04-2012 01:13 PM

Looking in on this one. I like Eleanor Burns quilt patterns, they do go fast once you follow the steps. I just finished my the top from the spring dresdan plate swap. Now to get quilted. If I get my UFOs for April done, will do this swap. but until then will pop in and say hi and watch you all show your beautiful work.

Lady_Paquette 04-05-2012 07:59 AM

Thanks for re-posting. I feel silly now. I just clicked the link and typed. Sorry. This block reminds me of a "stack and wack(slash?)" So colors is a free for all as long as they match. Quilt store and pre-washing the fabric again like the churn dash?

Yes prewash... My least favorite step! And actually for clarification, Deb did say we need 1-1/2yds background fabric, but MAY want 1-2/3 for safety insurance. I wanted to edit it above but there was no edit key so I think I didn't try soon enough.

Deb watkins 04-05-2012 01:31 PM

The first measurements I gave are for pretty accurate with a smidgen extra. I know we all make goofy cuts, so I usually get the higher amount. I would rather have a little more left over than be too short. 1-1/2 is enough for background but I like 1-2/3 as it allows for a little error now and then.

Lady_Paquette 04-05-2012 03:46 PM

I know Im being a pain but is it quilt store fabric again? (sorry) ^_^;

SheriR 04-05-2012 03:58 PM

I don't think she specified "quilt store".

Deb watkins 04-05-2012 04:03 PM

As long as it is nice feeling fabric, not flimsy or real thin - it should be 100% cotton though. Pre wash please.....I have been using fabric from JoAnn's, Connecting Threads.....and my blocks have been okay.

Annaquilts 04-06-2012 12:15 PM

Can some more people post the fabrics they plan to use. I hope to make a trial block this weekend but am still undecided on colors and type of fabric. Originally I leaned towards 1930 but not sure if they would play nice with all the other fabrics. Also I think I want to use two colors like the original pattern showed.

sharon b 04-06-2012 02:54 PM

Anna- sadly I haven't figured out my fabric yet- but want to do a trial block if I can squeeze it in this weekend . But I am still leaning towards the 30s with a white background

Deb watkins 04-08-2012 05:38 AM

Since this is a pinwheel of sorts, I think the overall theme will end up being some sort of 'organized scrappy'. I don't see any issue with using brights, batiks, 1930's....whatever. It is a summer theme - Go For It!

sharon b 04-08-2012 06:34 AM

Well I have the white here- went to Ericas yesterday and found a flowery fabric bought a 1 1/2 yard- the fabric to go with it they only had 3/4 of a yard , so hoping I can make it work I will try one and see what happens if not will have to get another color to throw in - ended up not being 30s fabric

Deb watkins 04-08-2012 04:03 PM

Doesn't have to be flowery!!!! Can be any fabric you want!

sharon b 04-08-2012 05:10 PM

Oh but I saw this fabric and feel in love with it :) and the blue to match I think was perfect just hope I can eeccckkk it out LOL

Monstookie 04-09-2012 06:43 AM

I would like to join this swap....I just printed off the pattern....as soon as I get home I will try it. If it works out ok....woohoo....I'm in.

Thank you for the warm welcome. Should be fun. Do we post a picture of our blocks once we finish them?

Deb watkins 04-10-2012 05:33 AM

That would be nice. We just LOVE pictures!!!

I made my first block this morning and it was really fun. However...do follow the directions, if it says..."Background must be on top." It means it...don't ask me how I know. :D

sharon b 04-10-2012 02:30 PM

Sheri - How pretty ! Have to get my fabric washed ....

karenpatrick 04-10-2012 02:48 PM

I love everyone's fabrics so far. My shipment from Connecting Threads is due tomorrow. I'm planning on using something from that order for this swap. I also plan to use a white background, probably a WOW. I'll post a pic as soon as I get my sample block done.

I'm so excited for everyone in this swap, and YEAH for new people!!! I have an odd question. If you see my pic below, we'll all have (if we do it according to directions) a small strip of extra. I hate waste, and I think this would be super cute sewn together and used as borders or binding. If anyone of you do not have plans for yours, let me know. I'd LOVE to beg, buy, or trade them. Wouldn't it be fun to have pieces from the squares? No pressure though lol. Just a thought I had while I was cutting pieces today. And please forgive my forwardness if it's an inappropriate request. <3

sharon b 04-10-2012 04:54 PM

Just remind me Sheri and I will send you mine :) Just don't remind me until after I make them - otherwise "old timers" and I will forget LOL

Deb watkins 04-12-2012 06:10 AM

I think that is a great way to use up that strip! So....if you don't want yours, feel free to send them ALONG with your blocks and I will pass them on to our own little 'begger'......Sheri - the block is fabulous. I love the color combination!

SheriR 04-12-2012 11:45 AM

LoL @ Deb. :D

Ok, so I just had to stop at the quilt store on the bank run, one block over, and talked myself into joining this swap. Just what I need, another quilt to put together. So here are my fabric choices. It is going to take me a couple of days to get them made up here because I am finishing up another swap. But, do you like? Red and white. How summery.

QuilterMomma I love LOVE your fabrics. They'll look so pretty in the MerryGoRound. :D

karenpatrick 04-12-2012 02:29 PM

Beautiful fabrics. Love the shade of red. Can't wait to see your block.

QuilterMomma 04-12-2012 02:43 PM

I do have to wash them tonight so I am sure the red won't run. Will be very pretty I think. Will post photo as soon as possible.

lfstamper 04-12-2012 03:09 PM

I'm going to make a block tomorrow to practice. Will decide once that is done but it does look like fun. Love all the fabrics so far! You all are sew funny too.

Deb watkins 04-12-2012 08:14 PM

HAHAHAHAHA........Caught QuilterMomma again!!! I absolutely love the red and white. It is going to be stunning as a block.

QuilterMomma 04-13-2012 07:27 AM

You caught me alright. I have them washed and pressed and ready to cut. I am supposed to be finishing projects, not starting new ones but they looked so pretty just could not help myself. If all goes well, will finish the last of the other swaps and get this one done asap so I am not last minute. I keep looking at them and just want to get them done. So excited.
