I've been using a combination of Ann Brauer's technique and FMQ. Her technique involves taking your backing and batting and folding in half to make a straight line. Sew on that line so it is visible. Then line up your first strip pretty side up and the next pretty side down and stitch. Finger press and continue. You can do it at an angle or overlay if you wish. What you end up with is a piece that is pre-quilted. I've been FMQing over that. Really enjoying this process. Or ... you can do a design or portrait in strips (or stripes)

Lynnie, I can't wait to see yours!
I was thinking that if you did tiny strips sewn together, and then sliced them - either regularly or at random angles - mixed them up ... what an interesting (and probably lumpy) result you'd get. I love experimenting!

Difergie 02-02-2013 05:22 PM

I have done the piecing already I am worried the quilting is going to be difficult because of all the seams...maybe not...the pre quilting system might have been good..too late, oh well, thanks anyway

JuanitaBean 02-02-2013 07:41 PM

Jean got your PM. I'm ready to send your DQ . Need to know what colors you like?

AlaskaAlice 02-03-2013 12:20 AM

Yes, Lyn, it was interesting. (movie "Lincoln")
I sent your doll quilt to you today.. I hope you get it ok...When I went to the PO. I had put it in a bubble envelope..charge would have been (I think about $8.00) I had checked on line and there the price for postage was $5.65..so..I mentioned it to the post lady and she said if I used their flat large envelope it would only be $3.75..so I hope you get it ok!! Pays to ask!!

Krystyna 02-03-2013 04:34 AM

$3.75? Wow! I'd love to know what service that is!

Nancy in Louisiana 02-03-2013 07:23 AM

[QUOTE=Krystyna;5833386]I've been using a combination of Ann Brauer's technique and FMQ.

Ah-ha!! Hints! Worked on yours yesterday -- looked "dumb" at midnite when I quit. Hope it looks better this morning. Got hung up on using only two colors (wasn't that last month's theme that I didn't follow?) I'm trying really hard not to go to Hobby Lobby or Hancock's because I know I'll end up spending big bucks with all the sales and coupons. Maybe some machine embroidery will help .....

urgodschild2 02-03-2013 08:48 AM

LOL....any excuse to go shopping. although it is hard when one is trying not to spend. LOL.
Mailing out of the USA......It really does depend on the type of envelop you put it in as to what it will cost. Of course no one ever tells you that. I just sent a package to Australia to the Grandkids. Inside were Valentine cards and candy....cost me about $10.........To mail it was $33. LOL. They do not sell conversation heart candy there or celebrate Valentines Day the way we do with the children exchanging cards in school and a party.
Lynnie......I thought about doing strips sewn together and then cutting the shapes but decided on stripes. Never worked with stripes so it was an interesting thing to do.
Nor tootsie rolls or ranch dressing.

urgodschild2 02-03-2013 08:50 AM

Well that was goofy.....they don't sell tootsie rolls or Ranch dressing there. They do sell other sweets that we don't have here. So it balances out I guess.

tesspug 02-03-2013 11:44 AM

Tulip and I have made contact. I had a dream about her DQ. Now I'm standing at the cutting table trying to figure out how to make it. Also contacted Tam-Moo. I love the cow in her avater.

That's funny Tess, your dreaming of the DQ and I am in the middle of a nightmare with yours! lol I am on the second DQ for you, again the "girls" have told me, "Mom, that is not stripey". So, back to the drawing board. Can't seem to shake my country roots, you would think I could find a bit of fabric in my stash that has stripes! I have a better chance of seeing a pig fly.:p
On to idea #3, needless to say Tess, probably won't be mailing at the beginning of the week, but I know I can get this right, I know I can, I know I can........
If I can find what box my camera/computer thingy is in, I will post pics of my two humble beginnings.

Found my photo/computer thingy,(that's a technical term). Here are my first two attempts, I thought I would build the star border with court house steps, but the girls called that cheating, lol

wanda lou 02-03-2013 06:11 PM

tulip those are great, I love both...

wanda lou 02-03-2013 06:18 PM

Hi Alaska Alice, that was a great price, are you on JBER maybe you get a special rate, My daughter and her family live in

Anchorage, Alaska on JBER base. when mailed her and my Grandkids Christmas package was $175.00, I thought I would fall over... next Christmas we are still sending the kids a couple of gifts to unwrap but we are also sending gift cards of good ole cash... that was just crazy...

Krystyna 02-03-2013 06:19 PM

Tulip, they're not stripey or strippy but they ARE cute and a half!

wanda lou 02-03-2013 06:20 PM

Nancy, still deciding on which of the series I'm working on is the one you'll get. Got side tracked for a couple of days making veils and hoping not to lose too many customers in my frantic catch up sewing! The Janome Memory Craft 6500 gifted to me by someone who I wish wouldn't insist on being anonymous is sewing like a dream. It took me a while to get used to it. I think I had sewing phobia for a while. Anyway, wow, I love love love it. I don't miss my Babylock at all.

Today I made curtains for the bedroom from some fabric I found on sale in the Red Dot section of Joann a couple of weeks ago. Hubby is working the midnight shift tonight (which I hate) so I wanted to make quick curtains to block out light so he'd sleep before work. They were pieced with top and side borders because I didn't have enough of either fabric to make them. Zipped right through them with this wonderful machine! :)

Tulip 02-04-2013 03:33 AM

Thanks wandalou and krystyna. I need to see an example, anyone want to help a gal out? I am a rule follower (Leo is my sign, lol). Otherwise, it is off to the fabric store to buy stripes!

Thanks Krystyna! I have the idea now. On a side note, your FM looks great!

Difergie 02-04-2013 07:24 AM

Mine is done except for label. When does everyone mail them? Mine is more traditional than I usually do but it is pretty. Hope my partner likes it!

Krystyna 02-04-2013 07:39 AM

Di, you can mail it whenever you are ready to mail it. I'm sure your partner will love it.

tesspug 02-04-2013 10:09 AM

Hey, Tulip, quilt "rules" are pretty loose. The one with the tiny squares has a stripe. It's the light color "stripe" going all around the center. If those are your rejects I'm pretty excited, cuz I love them both.

Postage is crazy up here..but there are ways to get it done cheaper... The PO boxes that cost a set price for all you can get into them have worked.the flat rate helps.but I have resorted to sending money and letting them buy..not so much fun.. I drive by JBER at least once a week.. When You come to Ak maybe we could get together.

Just spent 5 hours cleaning my studio and sorting scraps..even have husband cutting strips...I didn't have dust balls, I had dust boulders..it was embarassing...but will finish up tomorrow and then cut small pieces into 'doable' pieces ie strips and squares...
and be good for another year! Just had to let you know :o

Tulip 02-04-2013 04:50 PM

Tess, your a great partner! I have the idea now, I am off and running! Thanks for all the help.:D
