Description: Dresden Plate spring flowers and leaves.
We will be using the block pattern Dresden Plate from Quilterscache.com. Here is the link.

http://quilterscache.com/D/DresdenPlateBlock.html

Make 12 blocks alike, you will receive one of yours back and 11 different blocks.

Please mark EACH ONE of your blocks with a little slip of paper pinned to each block, or a sticky label can be used, please put the label on the back as sometimes some of the 'sticky' adhears to the block itself. Or you may write in somewhere that it will not bleed through with a permanent thin pigma pen. Please include your real name AND Board name.

You may send them to me any way you wish, just make sure you have a return ADDRESS label and a Flat Rate Stamp ($4.95) for the returning blocks. You do not need to send an envelope. I have ordered padded FRE for your return swapped blocks. Sign-up will close on MAY 31. PM me if you wish to join.

Blocks due to me by June 30. Because of problems with the deadlines in other swaps, if there is going to be a problem with having them here by June 30, please pm me. You also have the option of dropping out of the swap. It is not fair for those who do honor the deadline to be waiting and waiting and waiting.
In accordance with general swap rules, failure to send promised BLOCKS will be reported in both the public column of the group activity matrix and as negative feedback against the profile of anyone who does not fulfill their commitment to the swap.

If you want to make multiple sets, just make sure you have 12 blocks of each SET design. You will receive back as many sets as you send. The flat rate bubble envelope will hold two/theee sets. Any more than that, you will need another flat rate return address label and stamp.

I will post a tutorial and post a pic of my block later on. Please note - even though the plate shows the rounded edge, we will be folding the ends to make the point.

This will be the first in a two part Dresden plate swap. This first will be flowers of spring - you may use any spring time colors for your petals. I do ask that your background be white, or beige or even pale yellow if you prefer. We will be appliqueing leaves on our flowers. In June, I will open up the second swap, Flowers that Brighten our Fall FaLa, FaLa - which will be fall flower colors, same pattern. You may join in one or both!

This is an example of the finished block for this swap.

Not sneaking anything in!!! Well, maybe. With this block link, it will ensure that all the petals (plates) will be uniform size. I am headed to the basement now to do a plate, and some step by step for those who have not done this before.

I cut my background fabric 13" square. I will square it to 12-1/2 after the entire block is constructed

I chose pinks for my flower

This is a 16 petal block. I cut 8 of the lightest pink, and 4 each of the med and dark pink. The purple will be used for the center

After I chained stitched all of the plates, I snipped off the inside corner. This makes the 'point' of the plate

I learned this little trick to make the points real sharp. I cut a piece of that plastic 1-3/4 square. By putting one of the corners in the plate, it helps make a sharp point. Afterwards I press it flat with the iron

I had taken my background fabric, and folded it in half, pressed the fold, did the same for the top and bottom. I align my seams top and bottom as well as left and right on the folds of the fabric. This centers the plate on the background fabric

I used Heat n Bond lite for the leaves. You may use any leaf style you choose. I used an oval pattern. I also used it for the center purple circle

I decided to do a cluster of three leaves in each corner. I used a blanket stitch to finish off the 'flower', and used a lighter color thread to outline the leaves. Matching thread for the center circle. Pressed well, then square up to 12-1/2

I fingerpressed the seam open. This allows the tips to lay flat. I used a wooden applicator to poke the tip out

I printed off the templates from the link, cut them out and then traced and cut them out on a piece of folder plastic.

Begin to stitch the plates together in the layout design you choose. I started a little bit in from the edge, then backstitched to the top, then stitched down the 1/4" seam

The leaves need to be placed under the plates before stitching the plate in place. You may use any style or cluster of leaves that you choose.

Hmmm. not supposed to be sidways. Well, here is my part in neck exercises for you!! I folded the plate in half, and stitched across the top 1/4 inch. Be sure to start from the edge and sew in, instead of the middle out.

shawnemily 04-16-2011 07:59 AM

OH WOW Deb! You make this very hard not to join!!
I am going to have to think about it and see if I can up with time to do it!!
Beautiful block and GREAT tute!!
Thanks for hosting this (even if I can't come up with the time to do it!) I am going to love seeing the blocks everyone makes!

Deb watkins 04-16-2011 08:27 AM

Well, this is my 7th host in one year...and (Patrice thinks that I am nuts...) I have discovered that if I take the time to post the tutorial (even though many of us are seasoned quilters) with the finished block, it really takes out all the guesswork. I know for some the tutorials are not necessary, but if someone is just getting the courage to join, being very specific helps them. And I like the addition of the leaves, it really changes the look of the traditional Dresden plate block.

materialgrl 04-16-2011 08:55 AM

Yeah, I am a nutsy little stinker. I used the light heat and bond for the leaves and the center. Held everything down with a blanket stitch. Will put you down for one set for now!

I would like to see the "Bonnet Girls"patterns of the Past.
The completed quilt of one of the ladies that posted it here.
I thought I had post marked it but didn't and I am working on one now. Thanks

If you go to the search topic at the top of the message board, when that comes up, click on Sunbonnet girls and lots of posts will come up. You can look through those to find what you are searching for!

Haven't decided yet. I plan to print the pattern out this weekend and try it. Also have to check the stash. I have committed myself to not buy anything else and use what I have. My only purchase will be for backing.
Will let you know later. I know I have fall, but not sure about spring.

Yes, when you work, even if it is part time. I'll have to let something wait for a while.

Hey Deb,
I was playing around with fabric to try to figure out leaf size and how to lay it out. Is this what you are looking for. This is not the fabric I will be using, just my working sample. Nothing is stitched down yet. Did you stitch the leaves first? When you started stitching the center how did you go about it?

sample work in progress

Deb watkins 04-21-2011 04:35 AM

I placed everything where I wanted it first. Did the dab of glue stick to hold the leaves in place, THEN, I took off the plate and stitched down the leaves. Put the plate back down (I used a dab of glue stick on every 3rd petal or so to hold it in place as) and stitched around it. When that was done, I put the center on. Everything was done in a blanket stitch. Now, you don't have to put your leaves like I did....any way you wish is fine with me. For a sample block, it looks pretty good to me!

Karen 04-21-2011 12:31 PM

Pattis I think it is pretty just like it is.

Don't officially sign me up just yet ... but here's a block I made yesterday. The center isn't quite as bright in person. The camera flash went a little crazy!

The background is beige with a subtle crazy quilt-like pattern. Hope it's okay.

I'm sooooo slow when it comes to applique, so let me make sure I'll have enough time to complete the blocks before officially signing up. I'll let you know. :)

Karen 04-22-2011 06:12 AM

Moonrise your block is pretty..I really like the heart leaves!

Crafty3790 04-22-2011 06:52 AM

Those are so pretty I can't wait to start mine but I'm waiting for my background fabric it's supposed to get here today.

Deb watkins 04-22-2011 07:13 AM

Your block is great!!! I also like the heart leaves.

Those are gorgeous!

I've got all my pieces cut out. Now to find a few minutes (ha ha) to sew them before the Boomerang swap starts ...

Deb watkins 04-25-2011 04:31 AM

Those are beautiful blocks!! Please let me know if you are able to join in. Blocks aren't due till May 31!

rwquilts 04-25-2011 06:20 AM

Deb, your block is just stunning! I have made dresden plate blocks using Eleanor Burns method, but not with the addition of the leaves...that's what makes the block sooo striking! I will look at this and think about possibly joining. Just have to look at my calendar and know I can do it...perhaps I'll give one block a try and see how long it takes to make...your tute is great by the way!

tolepainter54 04-25-2011 08:09 AM

I'm right there with you moonrise.

WonkyWanda 04-25-2011 10:57 AM

I may need to join this swap! I have been wanting to do a dresden/flower quilt! I will pm you if I can 'clear the calendar' and make this work. Thanks for doing this swap, it looks like fun.

pattis47 04-25-2011 04:54 PM

come on and join the fun, it is a very easy block to make and really doesn't take long to make

rwquilts 04-25-2011 05:52 PM

I am sorely tempted, but after looking at what I already have going I sadly won't be joining you ladies for this swap, but will watch and admire all the beautiful blocks! I did print out and start to make one of the dresden plate blocks and remembered how fun they are! Maybe my schedule will allow me to join in the the fall one a bit later this year!

ebellot 04-25-2011 06:20 PM

Would love to join the Spring Flowers but have to much going on. Ladies your blocks are stunning. I will start on the fall flowers.

moonrise 04-26-2011 04:52 AM

My flowers are pieced together, my leaves are ironed on, and I'm ready to start applique-ing tonight!
