Welcome to Quilting in the New Year Swap – July 2011

Sign up deadline: July 18, 2011

This is a swap that would enable you to be paired up with another ‘Quilting Pal’ and swap a quilted item that each has made. It can be either machine or hand quilted. The Quilting Pals would know who each other is and can chat about their projects throughout the whole month. Projects swapped do not need to be the same item - so you can make whatever you make best. This would just be for July 2011. You would be signing up for one month at a time.

Beginner quilters as well as experienced quilters are invited to join. Every attempt will be made to match you up with a quilter who is at the same level of experience. (If an experienced quilter would like to be matched with a beginner and to be his/her mentor, please let me know.)

If you are international, feel free to join!

If you are interested in joining, please send me a Private message with the following information.

Screen Name:
Real Name:
Address:
Level of Quilting Experience:
Can you mail international?
Type of Project you'd like to make:
Do you smoke or have in house Pets:
Allergies:

This form will be given to your swap partners. Partners may choose to exchange additional information about such things as color preferences, specific type of project, etc. Partners are reminded that this is a swap. Please avoid issuing too many specifications as though you were placing an order with a commercial business. The elements of mystery and surprise are at least half the fun.

The cost limit on this is to be $15 (USA) excluding postage.

Sign up will close July 18, 2011. The names will be paired up by July 19, 2011. Partners are responsible for keeping in touch during the month to keep each other updated on the progress of the project. Anyone not completing and sending projects - will be given a poor swap rating and not be able to participate in this swap in the future,

All of the standard rules that apply to swaps apply. The rules were updated on 8 Dec 2010, so please make sure to check them before signing up.
http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-20154-1.htm

In addition:
Neither project will be sent out/exchanged until both are done. Partners will agree on a specific date on which each will put their package into the mail. Unless otherwise agreed by both partners, the projects should all be done and in the mail by August 25, 2011. You must notify coordinator when all items have been shipped and received so records can be updated.

This project has been approved by PatriceJ.

calla 07-09-2011 06:36 AM

I have never done a swap at this site, question, how to put a $$$ amount on the item, if I don't feel its value is worth that much may I include a new magazine? calla

calla 07-09-2011 06:42 AM

Is there a location at this board to view pictures of previous swaps? To get an ideas? Haven't swaped very much before and never here...........calla I wouldn't want to bite off more than I can chew or disappoint anyone..........calla

I know that I'll be sending her something. Of course if I wait until August I can call it a birthday present. Yep that's right. She has a birthday in August. :)

Calla - don't worry about the $ value on the item. We are all just having so much fun swapping what we make best. People have swapped anything from quilt blocks, purses, sweatshirts, sewing bags, pin cushions, wall hangings, table toppers, mug rugs, or anything that you sew the best. You will not disappoint someone with your project. And yes - some people have added goodies with their projects. It's all ok. You are talking to your partner about what you may want to make ( or some have just decided to surprise each other) - so this helps build the confidence that your partner will like what you make.

For pictures you can view any of our previous months.

Hi Calla:

You can do a search under Quilting in the New Year swap and then by whichever month. It started in January. Don't worry about biting off more than you can chew. When you are assigned a partner, you get to decide what to do for each other. Some people do small projects (pot holders, placemats, pin cushions) and some do a little larger (table runners, small wall hangings). Some do eye glass cases and some even just exchange blocks. It is up to you and your partner to decide what to do. You do NOT have to do the same thing either.

Please join us. If it would make you feel better, I would volunteer to be your partner. I know that we can work out something for you to make that would make you comfortable doing and not over stressful.

I love those Dotty! They are so cheerie. Did you get tired of doing circles? :)

dotcomdtcm 07-09-2011 07:48 AM

Bonni,
I make yo yos sitting around our NY Quilting Bee meetings,
when there is nothing else to hand sew. Then when I get a pile of them I can play! Dotty

BonniFeltz 07-09-2011 07:50 AM

That's a good way of doing it. I am debating if I'm going to go to our local quilt guild. Try them again and see if they are friendlier than before. It's been a lot of years since I went. I could take some small projects with me to work on.

This has been done every month so far since January. :) It IS fun and you get to chat/tease your partners with little hints, etc along the way. I've been quieter this month than normal so I don't show my partner too much. She wanted it to be a surprise.

It's a great way to get to know other quilters. Come join us!

maine ladybug 07-11-2011 01:38 PM

Sent a PM yesterday. Should I hear back that it was received?

dream56 07-11-2011 03:27 PM

Hi guys - all pm's answered now. Sorry for the delay - I worked 13.5 hours yesterday.

Thanks for the answers to the questions Bonni - appreciate you being there to fill in.

Welcome to all the new people signed up this month. I am glad you are joining us in the fun we are having each and every month. Like Bonni said, it is so much fun to chat and get to know your partner. Then super fun receiving a completed project when it's all said and done. Bonni did a super job starting this post in January and I stepped in to fill the position in March after Bonni had some medical issues.

Be sure to PM me with all sign up info before July 18th to sign up.

BonniFeltz 07-11-2011 03:42 PM

Heh. Make that HAS medical problems yet Dee. Woke up today with my eye swollen and a little puffy. Still have swelling and redness through the hair line also. I'm not letting it stop me from my projects though. Just takes me a little longer.

Think it means I'm getting old? Nawwww.... must mean something else. :)

islandwiz1 07-11-2011 04:21 PM

I am new to this swap. I love meeting new people and so far everyone here on this board and so very very helpful.
Is there any size to the gift we make?

You work that out with your swap partner. :) It varies between partners. That is part of the fun.

No sizes required - as Bonni said you decide with your partner involved. If you look back through this post you will see some of the items swapped. Just have fun and make what you do best. You don't have to make the same item your partner does.

immemother 07-11-2011 09:45 PM

Is it the 19th yet? (another version of are we there yet) - I am so excited about this swap :)

Thanks Dee. I am having a pretty good day. My loot is a new coffee mug/tea mug (16 oz) which says Queen of Everything (gotta love that), flowrs, a large lilac candle, candy treats. Here is a pix of the flowers.

BonniFeltz 07-12-2011 11:50 AM

Oh yes, I forgot. A friend also sent me this poem....

"May the Sun blush at your passage beneath Her;
May the Stars fall before your smile ever does;
May you cast a long shadow.
May you share another one, richer and more full than the last with us all.
--Liam Devlin, Bard of Shadows"

Liam is the one that I'm doing the medieval/SCA quilt for.

PS: Don't look at my messy desk in the picture of the flowers. :)

dream56 07-12-2011 07:18 PM

Bon - the flowers area beautiful and the gifts great. Hope you had a great day!

You need only make what you are comfortable making. I have been quilting for a number of years, there are areas that are definately less developed than others. I tend to stay in my comfort zone but a small project is great to try out new things. I am my own worst critic, if uncomfortable with how the project is turning out, can start something new.

dream56 07-16-2011 05:01 PM

Thanks for all your input.

Calla- just keep it simple. No one says you have to do anything fancy. If you are a beginner - I try to partner you with another beginner or someone willing to help you along the way.

When partnering people I try to look at their experience level, allergies, international mailing, type of project they are interested in making and who they were partnered with before. All of these are factored in when I select your partner.

BonniFeltz 07-16-2011 06:02 PM

Post holders, pillow cases (yes I need those), table runner....anything can be made if both agree to it. :)

And thank you Dee for reminding me to sign up. Oops. I almost forgot.

Conniequilts 07-17-2011 07:14 AM

His brats are gone. I can get in on this one and even out the numbers :)

My info is on its way to Dee.
