MARCH PATRIOTIC DISAPPEARING FOUR PATCH swap
1 Attachment(s)
Sign-ups are open until March 30[SUP]th[/SUP] or we have a maximum of 25 swappers, whichever comes first. Each month is loads of fun with a wide variety of fabrics in each swap. Sew much fun!
Welcome to our monthly D4P swap. Here’s how it works: we will be making 8 ˝” unfinished D4P quilt blocks in a different theme each month. One set equals 6 D4P blocks. You may make as many as 6 sets of 6 blocks each which would be thirty-six (36) D4P blocks. Wow! That’s a lot of quilt blocks. Imagine how cool that quilt will be??? I know! Right??? If you are making one set, you may either make all the blocks using the same theme fabric(s) or you may make each block using a different theme-for-the-month fabric(s). If you are making more than one set (up to 6 sets), please make all blocks in each set of 6 with the same theme-of-the-month fabric and use a different theme-of-the-month fabric in each set. March’s theme is PATRIOTIC. Please use ONE RED Patriotic print with solid white or ONE BLUE Patriotic print with solid white. Please send the kind of blocks you’d like to receive – squared up, pressed and trimmed. In case you’ve never made a D4P quilt block, here are the instructions: http://sewwonderful.blogspot.com/201...o-9-patch.html Quilt blocks made by Jaba Please use 100% cotton, quilt quality fabric to make your quilt blocks. Please PM me to sign up. Set(s) of Patriotic D4P quilt blocks will be due by APRIL 30[SUP]TH[/SUP]. ** Please label your quilt blocks** Mailing: please put blocks in a large plastic baggie along with your name and address on/in the bag. I'm in for 6 sets, think I might make a runner and maybe a table size "tablecloth" for the 4th of July.

1. Boop56 2. Happylab – 6 sets 3. Glasqlts 4. Jaba - 6 sets Jane |
I won't be joining in on mailing out but I want to see what comes in, I will be making my own set to put together.
I have enjoyed watching what everyone has been putting together. |
So when we get the blocks back, will they all be different or is 1 complete set exchanged for 1 complete set? Also, can we use washed or unwashed fabric? Which is preferred?

Hello, I'd like to join! One question tho -- solid white background versus a white on white?
I'll PM! |
Solid white is what I was told, to many different patterns of white on white.

Yeah!! I'm in!!! and I tried out this pattern last night since I had precut 5" blocks. What I learned is that the 5" blocks should be cut at 5.5" before stitching. I have a beautiful block, but it's exactly 8" finished. Glad I practiced before starting on the exchange blocks! Are there any finished tops out there that show layouts? Thanks!
|
MizMelly - good that you found out now, right??
To all our swappers - please be sure the back of your quilt blocks look almost as good as the front. The Quilt Police have reported some instances where the pressing need some real attention. They've also gotten reports that not all the quilt blocks are truly squared up and that the host had to actually square up some blocks! Can you imagine that??? Any questions - let me know! Jane |

Here are some possible layouts: Hope that gives you some ideas! Jane |
Oh please let me know if I did something wrong on any block. There will be no hard feelings. I need all the expertise help I can get. I have never taken sewing or quilting class's and I know there are some little things that need to be done to make it right. When you say not pressed correctly, can you be specific as to what was done and what should be done. You don't have to state names, but us newbies would like all the constructive criticism we can get. I know I have to make the mistakes to learn. Thanks Jane for any input you're the Bomb.

Thanks Jane! Glad you showed some layout ideas. I'm definitely going to do an on-point layout! It's gorgeous!! Yep, I can be a little slow sometimes, all the instructions I found were for 5" blocks to start. Now I know I'm not good at math, but give me a calculator and some fabric and I'm a whiz! I especially enjoyed watching the youtube video from Missouri Star too. Sometimes I am a visual learner.....
And this morning I pulled out my cutting board that is mounted on a turntable. However, today I have to finish piecing a quilt for my mom, so I'll start my blocks tomorrow. It's Spring Break and I have a week of glorious sewing ahead of me! Yeah!!! |

this needs some attention with pressing and squaring up. Also needs attention. Good example Hope these examples are helpful. Jane |

The same thing happened to me when I made my first D4P quilt block. I cut my 5" squares, made my quilt block and, ta da! - - - it was less than 8 1/2" unfinished. I made my next one with 5 1/4" squares and problem solved. Enjoy your Spring break! Have fun! Jane |

Beautiful blocks, Jaba! I hope I score one or two. I'm pretty sure that no one will have the same fabrics that I have, my patriotic fabrics were purchased more than a few years ago, and since I just got my stash organized, I went "shopping" and found 6 patriotic prints! Yeah!! And I have yards and yards of solid white fabric too. All it takes is a bit of organization and Voila! Look what surfaced!
|
Jaba - beautiful quilt blocks.
MizMelly - isn't it fun to go 'shopping' in your stash?? So much fun! Let's get some more people in this swap. Let your quilt buddies know about it so we'll have a nice big swap. Jane |
Those are the best finds and you'll finally use them. Waiting for a picture of those beautiful blocks your making....
|
Im with some of u others. I am self taught so there r a lot of little things that I miss it took me forever to figure out a "scant" 1/4" smh lol

Here is a way you can set a quilt top with just 12 blocks (2 D4P sets). I saved the picture because I thought it looked super. It sorta looks like it could have been made with Civil War prints. Note that the blocks were made by trading the green and pink prints between 2 blocks, instead of making, turning, and sewing only one block at a time. An interesting twist! But it might confuse some people if they don't see it right away... I posted this on the February D4P swap thread-- but thought I'd share it here too in case some of you are not reading that thread.
|
Great variation, Givio! Thanks - - -
Jane |
Jaba, I love the way the diagonal stripe goes around in a circle on the Civil War block, upper left in your picture. Isn't that cute!
|
Well givio, I had that all planned and cut it that way! Yea right, I didn't even notice until you said something. You have a meticulous eye my dear.......and I love it
|
I sent a pm earlier today because I want in on the fun also.
|
Awesome Jannie! We can always use 1 more person in the mix of things. When you get your blocks done, we love pictures if you can post....
|
Yeah!!! More swappers! More fun!!

Wonderful, MizKelly! We're going to have a great swap.

Thanks Jan, those pics help us to keep our eyes open to every detail.
|
Plan to start my blocks after I get my white fabric from the quilting store. Then I will wash the fabric and start making the blocks. I figure in a couple of weeks I will mail the blocks. I'll keep you all posted on how I get along.

I'm going to send three sets for sure (I'll let you know if I can do more.). Have to wait until after spring break to make them, but will post my fabric photos now. The fabric on left is called "Spacious Skies" - don't you love fabric names?? The two fabrics on the right are Robert Kaufman "Patriots" - I knew I'd use them some day! This is fun!
|
Wow, that State name fabric is cute!
|
I think it would make a great quilt backing, too! Or border, or something!
