try skinny binding? I know its harder but it might be worth it or perhaps cut the back slightly larger so you can pull it over the front and make a 'fake' binding looks like it was done completely but its just turned back fabric :) easy to do if you remember (I forget all the time) to cut it 2" larger than you would the front. pull over and turn and its not going to cover too much. I think one could improvise on the binding pretty easily and if it is a required thing then just remember that when buying a kit or cutting your fabrics. add a skinny round to your pattern so you have room to pull over and still show off your great little quilt!

tlambing 06-16-2014 07:51 AM

I'd really like to see some kind of binding on these. I think skinny binding is a great idea.
After all these are mini "quilts" :)

JuneBillie, that lil quilt was too cute..
Brat, your idea of fold back over with nice turned under edge is what I do quite often. I miter corners, do a hand stitch all around, and Tada! It's done..

I worked on my mini a bit over the wknd...and sign ups don't even close til Friday ;)
We have 20 swappers so far!!! What a nice group.

What are your "summer" theme thoughts? Colors? swimming, picnicking, bbq, fireflies????

Quilty-Louise 06-17-2014 09:57 AM

I have been struggling to narrow down my ideas LOL.

So far I have on the list:

Flowers
Picnic
BBQ
Swimming
Boating
Fishing
Kite Flying (that is more spring though)
Beach
Summer Colors
Pieced
Applique
Machine Embroidery

My crazy hubs suggested Christmas in July,,,, ummm not really LOL.

So many choices so little time (kinda).

I am staring to lean more towards doing something with machine
embroidery.

EL just put up their new designs this week and there are MANY
cute summer themed designs at $1.00 each. Link below.

cut.

OMG! Did you see the picnic in the line? How cute is that! That and the gardening line. Sew cute! I don't have embroidery capability :(
Someday maybe......

nancia 06-17-2014 03:04 PM

i'm thinking something water/swimming related. maybe painted and stitch embellished. or all pieced

nancia 06-17-2014 03:10 PM

btw, love the puppy! bishon? I have two elderly cocker spaniels (the ladies) and they are due for their summer do's. they get puppy cuts. today Kitten came in with her paws all clumpy with mud in her feet feathers. monkey manages to stay out of the mud, hates anything wet. my cats never play in the mud, too undignified! my avatar is a mughug I made to represent my red cat tiger.

tlambing 06-17-2014 04:37 PM

Frankie is a Maltese/Bichon Mix. Caution Ugly when wet. Such a personality. A 3 yr old boy with never ending energy.

Oooo water sounds nice. I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with.

LAQUITA 06-18-2014 02:07 AM

Not much longer yet, can't wait to get my partner!!! :)

JuneBillie 06-18-2014 02:53 AM

My list so far is- applique, pieced, summer colors, sun, flower prints/flowers in general, no machine embroidery for me either, ice cream cone, beachy, and I keep looking and looking at all the little quilts on Pinterest.

kiffie2413 06-18-2014 04:41 AM

Frankie's a cutie!
I have my applique pieces all cut and ironed on, going to do machine stitching..pattern calls for using black thread, going to do blanket stitch.
Hint: beach ball, kitty, sunglasses...

tlambing 06-18-2014 12:13 PM

I LOVE applique! Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with. Just a few more days until partners are set.

mom-6 06-18-2014 05:48 PM

Now I'm thinking fruits and flowers and sunshine 🌞. My beach and sailboats idea didn't pan out.

I think fruits, flowers, and sunshine sound terrific!
Tho I'm wondering if your beach and sailboat idea was better than you give yourself credit for...I know we can be our own worst critics, eh??!!

JuneBillie 06-18-2014 11:24 PM

I forgot to add before that little Frankie is such a sweet fur baby. Lots of good ideas posted.

klaws 06-19-2014 02:47 AM

Looking forward to receiving my partner's name. So many ideas going through my head.

tlambing 06-19-2014 06:29 AM

Sign ups close tomorrow evening.....
then it's just a little "bibbety boppity boo" and a partner list will suddenly appear :)

MizMelly 06-19-2014 06:56 AM

Ah, I have been looking and mulling over patterns. I also have a beach theme in mind. Applique and paper pieced. I sure hope it works. (looks good when I visualize it).
Say Hello to Frankie! I have a fat black sausage of a cat with one eye named Frankie too! Originally when I had his surgery for his eye, I called him Frank E. Stein. But now he's just Frankie. I'll have to post a pic of him and his buddy Jack, who also has one eye.

jaba 06-19-2014 07:41 AM

I'm need some inspiration thoughts, just not having any idea in my head. I better be having a light bulb moment soon.

buslady 06-19-2014 07:59 AM

Oh, my!! I better get thinking! I have an idea.....now to make it come to fruition. I'm thinking beach, lake, blue sky, and sunshine!!

Chasezzz 06-19-2014 08:24 AM

Woohoo! Working on my binding!

JuanitaBean 06-19-2014 01:43 PM

I'm thinking camping, flowers, on the road and a scrappy. Got a scrappy one done and ready. Working on a camping one so I hope my pattern will like one off them.

mom-6 06-20-2014 01:56 AM

All these ideas sound super! And the reason my beach/sailboats idea wouldn't work is that the fabrics didn't play nicely together and I'm on a self imposed fabric moratorium.

mom-6 06-20-2014 05:24 AM

I'm thinking since this is a mini, flannel for batting and fold over the backing for binding???

tlambing 06-20-2014 07:01 AM

Last Day for sign ups!
We have 26 swappers at this point...I'd love to make it to 30!

Partners out soon :)

Quilty-Louise 06-20-2014 07:33 AM

Yippeeeeeee

I am kinda waiting to get my partner so I can find out if there
are any colors I should avoid using.

I KNOW it is OUR choice, but I want my partner to be happy,
and put the mini quilt on display not hide it because the colors
are not their faves.

jaba 06-20-2014 08:13 AM

Kind of started an idea yesterday and ended up with 2. Helps when you use the right ruler for what you're trying to make. Will check in later to see if names are posted.

kiffie2413 06-20-2014 08:50 AM

All the ideas sound great!

Have all the applique finished on my mine...spent hours (yes, hourS) trying to decide which 2 fabrics I wanted to border it... Finally narrowed it to 3-4 combos....
I'm doing a very narrow inner border and then a lil wider outer border. Have a bright all over print for the backing.

Now just waiting patiently (ok, semi patiently ;)) for name swap time. I think this is a 1st for me.... having quilt so close to finished before getting partner name...
AND drum roll please, I didn't rip out anything except a few applique stitches that looked "catywampus". Hubby about fainted, since he teases that it seems I like to take out stitches more than I do stitching stitching.
Take care all,
Kif

Anything bright & cheery for summer will be great with me! :)

tlambing 06-20-2014 02:12 PM

No ones too late yet!
We have 28 swappers so far...............
Partners ASAP tomorrow.

JuneBillie 06-20-2014 04:17 PM

Oh wow 28 swappers is great. I too love anything summer and cheerful. I will be happy with whatever, because I know it will be made just for me.

I have looked at so many patterns. I do that with everything before I start. I also like to wait until I get my partner, but that is just me.

Was it ever decided how we can do our binding?

I think we are going to have lots of fun, and some already are with having some done. Well the rest of us are too with all our looking at ideas. :D

Have fun everyone!

tlambing 06-20-2014 04:55 PM

I'm really wanting the mini's to be bound. Either a separate binding or bringing the backing forward whatever works for you. Let's see how this works this time and maybe in the future we will have more leniency on the binding?

Hoping for 2 more swappers! "Come on you know you want to join us!":D

jaba 06-20-2014 05:51 PM

I have never sewn so many little tiny 1 1/4" inch pieces in my whole life. And the 1" little point things, forgot the name, I have to have my head examined for sure. Especially since I've never done them before, this swap doing all kinds of "first's" for me...that's a good thing, learning I hope. One good thing Tlambing, It's a little under 12 x 12"
