Round Robin #10
This round robin is meant to be a fun, social and learning experience. There is no skill level requirement, only to do the best work that you can. You should not feel that every round has to be a very complex design…sometimes the quilt will just need something very simple added at that particular point. If you have concerns about what to add at any point, feel free to ask for help from others in your group, the host of the RR, other sewing friends, or even the owner of the center. Remember…this is FUN!

Center should be any size between 12 "- 24 "finished, dividable by 3. (Be sure to add ½” for seam allowance!) The center may be square or rectangular. (The center block, all borders, cornerstones, or whatever should be carefully squared each step of the project.). The size of your center will determine the finished size of your quilt.
Borders will be 3 1/2" - 9 1/2" dividable by 3's again. (The center block, all borders, cornerstones, or whatever should be carefully squared each step of the project.)
Option - in lieu of any one of the first 2 rounds, the block may be turned on point, if appropriate. Triangles are then added to each side of the "diamond" to make it into a square again. Appliqué or embellish the corners.
• The bigger you make it the more the people adding rounds will have to do.
• Fabric: 100% cotton, washed. Please do not use any scented spray or item near fabric. Some of our members have allergies to scents, animals, smoke, etc.
• Include a label that each person may sign and a journal if desired. . Please use a Black Pigma pen or some type of black permanent fabric marker. You might want to leave enough room for everyone to list their name along with their board name, their city, state, country, and the date.

• Be sure to include instructions in your journal so the others know what you envision as a finished project. What will the finished project be used for: tablecloth, wall hanging, or lap quilt? Will your quilt have a season theme or color scheme?
• Each round should be worked. This means, a border needs to be more than just a single strip of fabric added. Examples of borders: add something in the corners, add several rows of borders, piece borders, appliqué borders, paper piece borders, hand embroider on borders, etc.. You can add an appliqué to a previous border, but you must add to that border.
This is a learning experience. Try new things!
• The owner is free to alter, add, adjust or do anything they want with the quilt.
We will be posting pictures with each round, unless you specify that you do not want to see your quilt until it is finished. For most of us…we just can’t wait.
Please stay on target for the mailing dates. You will have 2 months between mailings. If something happens that will cause you to be late mailing, please email the person who you will be mailing to and the leader of the group.

Graciously accept your finished quilt
Sometimes the final quilt owner will want to add more embellishments or add an additional border, but everyone who worked on your quilt used their best abilities. After the RR has closed, of course it is your quilt to do whatever you choose. We will all look forward to seeing the quilted final product! Please do not post pictures that show alterations or changes in someone else’s work though. Please be conscious of others feelings. If this isn’t acceptable to you, please DO NOT play.

Tips and Lessons Learned:
1. Print off the rules, mailing dates, your group mailing list.
You will be referring back to it.
2 Don’t panic…hang the top for a few days and let it speak to you. They tend to “tell you what they need next”.
3. If you are trying something new….do it on the separate border, do NOT sew it to the quilt until you are sure it worked.
4. Please DO NOT let tops pile up on you. If you need help, ask…there are others who can and will step in to help you through a time crunch bind. We can work it out.
5. Please handle the quilts carefully. We all drag them around to show them off to friends, guild members, LQS, etc. but when doing so, we can stretch the borders so the finished quilt doesn’t lie flat. Please make sure it does lie flat prior to mailing it on to the next person.
6. If for ANY reason, you feel the need to resign from doing this at ANY point in the "game", PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE let me know! It's not fair to the others for someone to just pull out, not tell anyone and keep what is not theirs.
7. No public criticism. If you are having a problem with something, please notify your leader.

Mailing dates:
Oct. 1, 2013
Dec. 1, 2013
Feb. 1, 2014
April 1, 2014
June 1, 2014

You will always send to the same person. Have fun.

Welcome. Please sign in. We have 3 of our original group and 2 new ones. Let's get to know each other. Tell us about yourselves. Do you have any questions, let us know.

jclinganrey 07-16-2013 09:22 AM

Hi group! I'm excited about this RR. Hope everyone else is too. Good to have some new people in our group. Sherry, isn't it amazing how this idea grew? Who knew so many people were interested?? I counted 26 all together. Whew!

I've printed everything out to keep me organized. It looks like I'll be mailing to Janet (travelingramma).

Looking forward to getting started!

Jane

ssnare 07-16-2013 01:02 PM

Jane, you are right, there are 26 in the round robin. I picked out my fabric today and I know what my center is going to be. Yippee!

Wonnie 07-17-2013 03:06 PM

Welcome Annemixon and Travelingramma! This should be a lot of fun! Have three distinctly different centers in mind and would be happy with any of them. Thank goodness we have until Oct. 1 to mail the first one.....gives me lots of time to sew and rip!!!!! :)

Hello everyone! I'm 76 going on 29...if only I could convince my knees of that some days and remember to never look in the mirror!!! Love challenges and have never done a RoundRobin but have loved working on the RoundRowRobin that is almost finished. Love to quilt, everything except the sandwiching....(YUCK!) Also, love applique, punch embroidery, thread crocheting, reading, drawing. Just finished my first Mug Rug Swap and the July Secret Pal Swap which was a lot of fun. I'm not a competitive person except with myself...always looking for ways to "make it better" the next time.

Have 4 grown children and six grandchildren ranging from 10 to 30...grew up in the city but have lived in the country for many years but not on a farm. My son and I are currently helping my daughter and son-in-law strip 4 layers of wallpaper off of 8 rooms to help them refurbish a delightful old home they just purchased. The only bad part is the hour drive both to and from the home every day. Love the beach, trees, flowers (unfortunately I have a very brown thumb) but love to take drives and enjoy other peoples beautiful yards.

Hi, I am 71 years old. I am a retired R.N. My husband and I celebrated our 46th anniversary, June 30. We have 3 sons. We have adopted our 16 year old granddaughter. We have had her since she was 2. I started quilting 3 years ago. I started with a cathedral window, which I am still working on. The back is done by machine and the windows are all done by hand. I have done oil paintings. I love to paint mountains, water, and water falls. I have made jewelry. I have been in 3 row robins and 3 round robins. I hate to sandwich quilts. I like piecing them and doing applique on them.

We are planning on moving in Dec. We purchased property last week and we are waiting to close. We also found a home last week. We were notified Tues. that we were approved for a loan. Then yesterday, we were told that the wrong numbers were submitted, so the loan has to be reconsidered and we are waiting to hear if we have been approved again. Very stressful.

travelinggramma 07-18-2013 06:53 PM

Just spent a week with my grands (8yo gs, 7gd and 4mth gd)and their parents who came to AZ! What fun we had. Body is still recouperating!! I am going to be 59 and been married since 1976. We have two children - 35 yo daughter who is married and living in Baltimore, and a 31 yo son living in FL with the mother of our 3yo grandaughter.
In 2003 we purchased a fifthwheel and truck and moved out of our house in NY, hubby sold business, I left my job and we traveled the USA. We have been in AZ for past 1.5 yr as hubby has had issues with his diabetes. I work three days a week at a Western Art Museum.
I did counted cross sticth for years, but when we went on the road I had tendonitis so bad I couldn't hold the needle. So i took up quilting and love it.

travelinggramma 07-18-2013 06:59 PM

I have a question - I was thinking of a center that would measure 9.5 x 21.5 Would this be acceptable? Or should I make it 12 x 24?

ssnare 07-19-2013 03:50 AM

Welcome travelinggramma. The minimum should be 12.5. Add a border on the 9.5 sides if you want. What kind of center are you thinking about?
I decided that my center is going to be a panel with 4 dolphins. It is in blues, navy, aqua and a touch of gold.
Our group likes to talk a lot and we love pictures. We still have not heard from Anne. Please post when you send and receive a center. Please share ideas and thoughts.

travelinggramma 07-19-2013 07:48 AM

No problem adding an extra border. I posted before thinking ;}
Found "Needles and Notions" paper piecing book in library and using four blocks to make my center. Will post when totally done.
My 8yo GS wanted to know if I sew just to take it apart.....

Sorry, I don't belong to this group, but this is just TOO Funny! I may have to make this my sig line!

Wonnie 07-21-2013 06:28 PM

Yoo hoo!!!!! Where are you Annemixon?????????????????????????

ssnare 07-21-2013 07:37 PM

TheMamaHauser sent Annemixon a pm , I have sent a pm to her and I just sent her an email. I sure hope she joins us soon.

Hey, you all I started on my center. it is 4 dolphins coming out of the water. It is in blues and aqua. When we went on vacation last year in Galveston, we saw dolphins coming out of the water and it was thrilling awesome. I want my top to represent the ocean. No boats, no light houses, just blues and sand color. I am putting mitered corners on 3 different borders. I have just learned how to do mitered corners from doing attic windows for my state flowers quilt. I have never done mitered corners around all 4 corners. So, I am trying something new already.

Here is my center. The colors are prettier in person.

Wonnie 07-22-2013 12:14 PM

Oh I do like that a lot Sherry!

travelinggramma 07-22-2013 12:56 PM

Oh I love anything to do with water - and have the fabrics to prove it!! Now I have a llloooonnnnggg wait to get yours. can we add other dolphins?

ssnare 07-22-2013 01:08 PM

I added the aqua, sand color and aqua. I love water too. You sure can add other dolphins and or other ocean life.
I have a question for all of you. How long should we wait for Anne to respond? Do you want to go with just 4 or someone else asked if they could join. Do you all like pictures of each round? I do.
I wanted to get mine done early because we will be moving and I wanted to get this out of the way. I am ready to send mine. LOL.

Wonnie 07-22-2013 01:24 PM

Okay...my 2 cents worth. Are there any kind of rules re those who don't respond? I think if not we should wait till the 31st of this month because we have 2 months to work on each row so that would give a new person 2 full months to work on her center as well as the rest of us. Don't care if we go with 4 or 5... Yes, I like pictures with each round. Gives me ideas of what I might add when it's my turn. Sorry Sherry dear...you'll just have to hang onto it until Oct....haven't even started mine yet!

Wonnie 07-22-2013 01:25 PM

So, what say you Travelingramma and Jane??????????????

everyone has until October 1st to get their center block done- and it is summer time-people tend to get busy- with summer activities- family, vacations---no reason to get an (attitude or worry) about not hearing from someone already- they signed up knowing they had until October.

Wonnie 07-22-2013 02:23 PM

You'll notice my answer to Sherry's question started with, "Are there any kind of rules re those who don't respond?" because I think there should be.......people do drop out or don't respond or don't notify hostess' when asked and it is an ongoing problem. If we wait until Oct. then we should not add someone new at the last minute...it's just not fair to them so, if that happens then I guess we should just go with four. I was asked for an opinion...I gave it.

TheMamaHauser 07-22-2013 05:22 PM

I just want to pop in - the group names were released a week ago tomorrow. It's July which is prime vacation season and the original posted due date for the swap was October first. It may be a little early to start asking about replacing members - how do you think Anne is going to feel if she comes into the room to check in and sees you guys are already talking about replacing her after a week? If you want mandatory participation in the forum months before the first mail date, that information should be put in the original sign-up information. She's active in other swaps but hasn't posted in several days - give her the benefit of the doubt and a little time before you begin seeking a replacement.

ssnare 07-22-2013 07:29 PM

Please calm down everyone. We are not trying to replace anyone. I am sorry if I asked a question. I am a little gun shy since a row robin that I am presently in had someone who was not heard from for a long while at the beginning and did not send my top and someone elses since Feb. I apologize for any misunderstanding. I am a worry whort.

We welcome Anne and we are looking forward to meeting Anne. We are anxiously waiting to here from her, that is all.

Please, no more comments regarding this.

jclinganrey 07-25-2013 08:21 AM

I posted on the very first page. I haven't even started my center yet. Working on finishing current projects like 'my city'. . . .

Jane

Wonnie 07-25-2013 02:31 PM

Hi Jane! Haven't started mine either but there's plenty of time. Have 3 different centers I'm thinking about that I like equally. The one I had leaned toward is looking more and more complicated so will probably go with another. You got me hooked on 1930's quilts so that's one of the ones I'm contemplating and leaning more and more toward. Still working on Sherry's butterflies. Good to hear from you!

I am in two swaps with Anne and she isn't online alot. I am either on for days - and then don't log on for days.
Anyway I was working on this thinking it would work...but alas the measurements got outof hand ...so a wall hanging for my sewing area is where it is going. Now to come up with something for ME!!

travelinggramma 07-25-2013 04:28 PM

See - I am working on my wavy water for the dolphins!

Wonnie 07-25-2013 05:01 PM

Wow! Really nice job! Like it a lot! Love the colors. Did you make the quilt in your avatar?

ssnare 07-25-2013 07:56 PM

My center is not laying flat, what can I do? I have 3 sets of mitered corners.

Janet, can you please at least get Anne to come and acknowledge that she knows she is in this

Wonnie 07-26-2013 04:25 AM

Can you post a picture of it Sherry so I can see if I can figure it out?

travelinggramma 07-26-2013 09:15 PM

Wonnie - the double wedding quilt was my gift to my daughter and her hubby on their wedding. She asked for the pattern and I had tried and tried every which way to no avail. Finally took a class using the Judy N pattern and it worked. Best part was that it is all in batiks and I didn't have to worry which side was up or down!

I see lots and lots of work and hours in it!!!

Wonnie 08-02-2013 11:03 AM

How's the "wavy water" and the dolphins coming travelingramma? Are you piecing? paper piecing? appliqueing? I'm still in a dither.....3 possibilities, any of which I like....just too many irons in the fire right now to concentrate on it.

Are you in the process of moving Sherry? or packing? or unpacking? Don't mind moving to another location....just don't like the packing and unpacking.....and after 35 years in this home it would be a nightmare!
Currently doing the packing thing with my daughter and son-in-law ....the kitchen things alone are staggering.

Jane, take your time on my row...if you don't get it done by Sat. that's fine....just let me know when you mail so I can watch for it. So excited!

Wonnie 08-02-2013 11:16 AM

Hello Annemixon! Have never heard of St.Matthews, SC....what is it near? Always wanted to visit South Carolina on the coast but never got there. Where in Florida did you live? We were all originally from Ohio and I still am but my parents, brother and sister all moved to Lakeland, Fl years ago...only my brother left now. My mother sewed a lot, too...she could make anything! I wasn't much interested in it at the time, preferred being outside!....my interest came much later.

Elisabrat 08-02-2013 04:19 PM

Hello bluebirds this is Linda from the hummingbirds! I wanted to let you all know if you run short a partner come Oct I can be very fast and help you out and join your group too so no worries. and anyone who knows me knows I will participate so you just hollar at the Brat and I will come running (wobbling) to help my friends out :)

Wonnie 08-02-2013 05:51 PM

That's very sweet Elisabrat (sorry...just can't call you Brat)...

ssnare 08-02-2013 08:24 PM

Just to let you know, I left a message on Annemixon's phone. I have not heard from her yet. Sure hope we hear from her soon. I hope she is ok.
