Once the groups are assigned, I will be asking for a Point Person from each group to help out with anything that may arise within the groups. There will be 5 rows so there will be 5 folks in each group.

There could be at least one Canada/International person in each group.

Row Robin 2012

Overview:
This row robin is meant to be a fun, social and learning experience. There is no skill level requirement, only to do the best work that you can. If you have concerns about what to add at any point, feel free to ask for help from others in your group, the host of the RR, other sewing friends, or even the owner of the center. Remember…this is FUN!

Rules:
1. Fabric should be prewashed and of a type that you would be happy to receive yourself. This means 100% cotton but but does NOT need to be LQS.

Please remember that each top will circulate through many sets of hands and equipment as it travels the world. There may be a variety of techniques used as well. it's best to select fabrics that will hold up well under a variety of conditions and that can withstand repeated machine washing. Fabrics you can see through, that appear to fray easily, or that are loosely woven are not the best candidates for a shared project.

2. Use any techniques in which you feel comfortable, machine/hand piecing, machine/hand appliqué, machine/hand embroidery, paper piecing, etc. This in not particularly the time to experiment with new techniques unless you are confident that you can pull it off. You might want to experiment before attaching the row to the quilt in case you have to rework something.

3. Each row will be 12 ½” by 60 ½”

4. We will be posting pictures with each round, unless you specify that you do not want to see your quilt until it is finished. For most of us…we just can’t wait.

5. Please stay on target for the mailing dates. You will have approximately 2 months between mailings. If something happens that will cause you to be late mailing, please email the person who you will be mailing to and the leader of the group. Specific mailing dates will be sent out with the group assignments.

6. You will need to insure your packages when mailing.

7. Please, ONLY sign up if you are serious! We understand that life does and can get in the way, but if you KNOW you cannot fulfill your end, PLEASE do not sign up. I personally did not get my last quilt top because someone just dropped out without finishing and I was heart broken....please do NOT do this to anyone.

8. These rules apply to EVERYONE!

The Quilt:

The theme is a design of your choice. You need to make the first row 60 ½” by 12 ½” but you can orient it either horizontal or vertical. (Each row should be carefully measured and squared) Each sequential row should be a continuation of the theme of the first row but can be what technique you would like.

Add a Label
We suggest that you add some type of label to circulate with your top so that all the members of your group can sign it. Please use a Black Pigma pen or some type of black permanent fabric marker. You might want to leave enough room for everyone to list their name along with their board name, their city, state, country, and the date.
If you don't want to do a label for people to sign because you haven't figured out what you want the label to look like, that is fine too...just add a piece of paper that people can sign.

Graciously accept your finished quilt

Sometimes the final quilt owner will want to add more embellishments or add an additional border, but everyone who worked on your quilt used their best abilities. After the Row Robin has closed, of course it is your quilt to do whatever you choose. We will all look forward to seeing the quilted final product! Please do not post pictures that show alterations or changes in someone else’s work though. Please be conscious of other feelings. If this isn’t acceptable to you, please DO NOT play.
Tips and Lessons Learned:

1. Print off the rules, mailing dates and your group mailing list.
You will be referring back to it.

2 Don’t panic…hang the top for a few days and let it speak to you. They tend to “tell you what they need next”.

3. If you are trying something new….do it on the separate row, do NOT sew it to the quilt until you are sure it worked.

4. Make sure you understand how to fill out the customs forms BEFORE you send an International package

5. Please DO NOT let tops pile up on you. If you need help, ask…there are others who can and will step in to help you through a time crunch bind. We can work it out.

6. Please handle the quilts carefully. We all drag them around to show them off to friends, guild members, LQS, etc. but when doing so, we can stretch the rows so the finished quilt doesn’t lie flat. Please make sure it does lie flat prior to mailing it on to the next person.

7. Feel free to add information to accompany your quilt such as colors you would prefer or something you definitely don't want, that it may be a gift, etc. Please don’t add fabric to your package as it does cost more to mail it along. You can add a little swatch card with what fabrics you used, the manufacturer’s name, etc. as someone may want to match something. If you do have extra fabric, you might want to let others know, they may ask for some to be mailed to them directly to work on a specific round if they can‘t purchase it.

8. If for ANY reason, you feel the need to resign from doing this at ANY point in the "game", PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE let me know! It's not fair to the others for someone to just pull out, not tell anyone and keep what is not theirs.

Qbee,

Is it okay to ask the participants to not sew down their row? I just want the option to add additional border lines and move around the rows before sewing them down.
Thanks!
Ruth

Qbee 08-12-2012 05:18 PM

That is fine.....depending on the group you are in, they may be willing to add sashing as well :)

TheMamaHauser 08-12-2012 06:22 PM

I just PM'd. I had some questions - I'll ask them here in case other people wonder the same things:

1. What is a "theme"? I was going to ask for black, white, and green fabrics/prints to be used. Is that a theme? Is it ok to ask for such specific colors/fabrics?

2. Is Mary Ellen's Best Press (the scented ones) considered an allergen? I know several of the smells make me sneeze so bad I feel like I'm going to pass out some time. Should I just plan to use the unscented for every row I work on? Or should I wait and see what my specific group members prefer?

3. Is anyone else as excited as me? This is my first row robin. Woo!!!

1. Yes that is exactly what a theme is :) It can be a color theme like black & white. It can be a fabric theme like Batiks or 30s. It can be a special theme like Christmas or kitchen or whatever you want it to be....just have fun!

2. As far as scented vs non-scented just wait and talk to the others in your group.

3. Yes....I am VERY excited as well!!!

wanda lou 08-12-2012 11:18 PM

Kelly thank you for asking the theme question.

frustratedquilter40 08-13-2012 02:09 AM

I PM'd you I like the idea of just 5 rows and the size is perfect. The time frame to get it done is great that way everone has time to let ideas accumulate and pick the best one and not feel rushed. I like the idea of not attaching the rows to one another unless you want too or sending the sashing strips with it. Will have to talk with each of our groups:) and see how they feel

debfaye 08-13-2012 04:48 AM

I would love to join your row robin
I am currently doing an international round robin that should finish in Nov/dec. just 3 more rounds.

You said to pm you but I am afraid I do not know how. I will gladly give you all of the above info except an address As i will be moving from Japan in early Oct to the Enid Oklahoma area. So can provide that when I get there.

Sounds fun!
I've been thinking about themes, and I'm between two ideas at the moment... Good job theres a while before first posting date!

nclauri 08-13-2012 04:58 PM

I have been wanting to join a swap of some kind. My main concerns are time. I tend to be slow and I worry that someone won't like what I contribute. I have a few questions. Will you only be working on one round at a time for a total of 5 rounds? If so, I think I can handle that. Also do you have any links to quilts made from other row robins?

Thanks.

Qbee 08-13-2012 05:30 PM

You are only working on one row at a time. You have 2 months for each row so it gives plenty of time :)
Hope you decide to join the fun!!

Are there any pictures from a previous Row Robin?

linmid 08-14-2012 04:59 AM

Am I correct in thinking that if there are five people in a group I will do one row for each of the other four?

SazuBMidlands 08-14-2012 08:28 AM

Linmid, that's my understanding. You make one row for your own top, and one row for each of the other 4 group members in turn, with about 2 months for each row.

I have 2 ideas, one of which really needs sashing, and the other doesn't. Which do people think I should do?

SazuBMidlands 08-14-2012 08:28 AM

Whoops, double post. Sorry.

babeyruth 08-14-2012 03:50 PM

Hi Linmid,

You can do a search from the top right corner of this site (it looks like a blank square) put round robin row and you'll find all kinds of hits. You can also just google to get some idea. I can't make up my mind for a theme either, I am thinking either Mexican or flowe power. :)

Qbee also said that the group we are assigned to (5 peeps) could decide on the attach rows or not. I know I would got with the instructions I receive from the owner.

Qbee 08-14-2012 04:58 PM

Here is a really nice row robin :http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...d-t196264.html
Linmid is correct about how it goes. You make a row for yourself first, then you will make one for the other four folks one at a time with two months to work on each row. It's tons of fun :)

Sauki1 08-14-2012 05:15 PM

I am totally in for this one! I can't wait but honestly no clue on my theme yet. Will send you a PM with my specifics.

QuilterMomma 08-17-2012 01:07 PM

So if each row is 12.5", that does not necessarily mean we have to make that size of block correct? Let us say we want a house row quilt, not all houses are the 12.5" square. Or a star theme row quilt, then we could make them different sizes in the row and off set them and such correct?

Qbee 08-19-2012 05:00 PM

QuilterMomma, as long as the row is 12 ½” by 60 ½” then each block can be whatever you want. You could make one long "block" if you wanted. Hope that answers your question.

Ya'll get your buddies in on this.....we need more folks!! :)

charlottemarie 08-20-2012 03:58 PM

Say I want my block to be 60.5 long, I could do Sue's & their houses if I wanted my two favorites in one spot?

Qbee 08-20-2012 04:44 PM

Exactly....as long as the overall size is 12.5 X 60.5 you are good. Other people could then make 5 block or whatever they wanted that matched your theme.

charlottemarie 08-20-2012 05:42 PM

Great, than that is going to be my preference, my two favorite blocks!

QuilterMomma 08-21-2012 11:09 AM

Watching still, that first deadline will be a tough one for me, even though for self, because of my own UFO projects I am doing. Will see.

QuilterMomma 08-21-2012 11:14 AM

I know we asked not to sew rows if we want to add a border, but what if we could send along the already cut borders in with our quilt so they can be added as it goes around the country/world? It would only be three extra strips in package. Would that work? Oh I know, being difficult but can't hurt to ask, this way the quilt is all together and can be viewed easier than strips hanging in a row.

TheMamaHauser 08-21-2012 11:54 AM

I have finished 3 of my 5 planned blocks for this first row. I'm hoping I can finish up the other 2 and get the row sewn together before Sunday night. School starts back up on Monday... (queue sound effects) dun dun dunnnnnn.

QuilterMomma 08-21-2012 01:20 PM

You are busy TheMama, I would have you in two swaps if I signed up for this one. Hmmmm, not sure if I could handle that girl. You make me laugh to much and I would be on the floor rolling instead of sewing.

Well, I could send you a few more F8's and you can pretend that you're just doing a few extra boom blocks... and keep 'em. I promise they'd coordinate.

Qbee 08-21-2012 05:51 PM

Each group will decide these things among the 5 assigned to the group. Some groups may decide not to sew the rows if their is sashing, while others may decide to do just what you are suggesting and send the sashing along with the rows. Hope that helps! :)
