I dont know what you mean by P M . So i can get the address to send blocks to. ? ....

Jane Quilter 08-02-2016 08:59 PM

I am sooooooooo confused. So this is MY UNDERSTANDING of what we are doing:
1) I am making 6 "things" that look like what is in jclinginrey's first introduction to this thread. (gold & white)
2) My quilt, when done, will look like jacquie's, shown in her addition to this thread.
Am I wrong?
Don't confuse me by talking about what a Hunter's star block is (4 of these etc)

PM is a Private Message. Just click on the person you want to send a message to & an icon will appear below their name, just follow the prompts & remember to submit your message!

Please send me a PRIVATE MESSAGE (PM) and I'll give you the mailing address. As others well know, it's never a good idea to broadcast a personal address on a public site.

You're right. The size of your finished quilt will depend on how many blocks you end up making.

I'm sure some people, myself included, will be making additional HS blocks in order to have enough to make a completed star (4 block unit) depending on how many blocks I end up with. Also depends on what size quilt you want too.

Please also look at the examples I posted as well.

Any other questions, please ask.

OMG, the monthly swaps! I have been out of the loop for a while. Jane, if my daughter doesn't need me next week, I think I can get some sets made. Will Monday be too late to let you know how many sets and if I can get them out?

Jane Quilter 08-05-2016 04:56 AM

I mailed 3 sets of 6 (18) blocks today.

Yeah!!! Will post on this thread when I receive blocks from swappers so everyone knows when I have received your packages.

jclinganrey 08-05-2016 08:09 AM

I know my original post said the mailing deadline is August 15th but please feel free to send your blocks sooner if possible!

Hi Everyone,

I just joined this swap. Jane was gracious enough to allow me to hop in late. It looks like fun. I started my first set of 6. I mistakenly cut the big squares at 6.5", and that made the 2.5" HST too small.... I almost threw all of those HST into the trash I was so frustrated... then I discovered that the big squares were supposed to be 4.5" not 6.5", That was an easy fix.... whew!

Thanks for letting me play!
hugs, Jupiter

Absolutely, Jupiter. Glad to have you!

How is everyone else coming along? Would love to see some pictures - - -

Gannyrosie 08-06-2016 08:03 PM

Will try to get some pics tomorrow. I've spent the past two days cutting and cutting. I wanted to try to post a pic, but on my tablet, this site is a different layout than on my pc, so I couldn't. What I wanted to post was an epiphany. ( may not be to some professional quilters, but it was new to me.
I spent friday cutting all my 6.75 squares and 4.5 sqares. Had them all sewn this morning. As I was trimming the blocks to 2.5, I tried several ways. I tried opening up the blocks and ironing and squaring up with a 2.5 block ruler. I also tried using the Eleanor Burns way of putting tape on the 2.5 mark of a ruler and laying it just beneath the sewn line of an un opened hst. Both ways were giving me headachs as the ruler was movin and shoptin . They would slip or it didn't measure 2.5 square. ( I need to square off over 200) and it was getting to me. I had iron all the untrimmed blocks out to a square. I then took my 2.5 ruler and added 2sd layers of painters tape along the diagonal line. Though the outside of the ruler had some sort of stabilizer around the edge of the ruler, the ruler still wanted to move on me, causing me longer cutting time, frustration, and unevern 2.5 squares. So my ephany was to take some painters tape and mark it on the diagonal line ( 2 layers). This way I could shove the tape along the sewn line ( of the opened block) and the block won't shift. Boy did that go easier.
don't get me wrong, if was just a couple of blocks, no problem, but over 200, problem. I found by adding the tape along the diagonal line, then lining it up ( diagonal Line) w the tape on the half that doesn't have the seam ( light colored faric - uusually, it holds it's self in place and doesn't slip. Yah me. cause this cutting is gettin old on my hands

You get the award for perserverance :)

I have a Bloc Loc ruler which made squaring up my HST's a breeze. I love it to death!

Gannyrosie 08-07-2016 05:38 AM

Wholeheartmom, you know as I was having my epiphany, I was thinking why hasn't someone come up with a ruler with a grove and now I see they have, however my fix was cheaper and removable. Lol.thanks for sharing.

Gannyrosie - glad you found a solution that works for you! For me, I can handle tackling 8 HST's at a time rather than 200++. It's a mental thing, suppose.

Here are my blocks - - -

good morning all, I really like these squares and am looking forward to seeing what I get back. I mailed my 1st set yesterday and started cutting for next month! Sadly I have no idea how to post, so Jane, when you get them, would you please do that for me. I am finally starting to get some of the old swaps together and enjoying starting again,

Jupiter 08-07-2016 08:32 AM

Oh that is so pretty jclinganrey! Can hardly wait to get my own bunch gathered.

You are so right... the bloc loc ruler was incredibly pricey and I nearly kicked myself for spending so much money on a silly ruler. Now I can't live without it :)

vovoa 08-07-2016 12:33 PM

Will the color always be gold and white?

givio 08-07-2016 01:33 PM

vovoa, no, not always gold, that was just an example. Use any color you want on the dark side, it's scrappy.

Jane, I loved being in your 30's and batiks D4P swaps, along with your Jacob's Ladder swap (Bonnie Hunter Floribunda). I was thinking of joining this one, but I don't have many lights in my stash. But
your post picturing the blocks you've made looks like you are using 'mediums' for the 'light' side of the block. For example, your blocks with green both look like they have a 'medium' green-- but the one block uses the 'medium' green for the 'light' side, while the other block uses it for the 'dark' side. Does the light side just need to be lighter than the dark side-- that's all? If that's the case, maybe I'll join next month! :-) Let me know.

Here are my completed blocks for this month. I chose to only complete one set of six but now I wish I had the time to make more! Oh well..... there is always next month! :)

Ok, well i guess I'm not smart enough to figure out where to send blocks to . Im having no luck with this. So idk.

Wholeheart Mom 08-08-2016 02:47 AM

Have you found the link to private messages?

If not, go to the very first post in this thread. The author of the post is jclinganrey, and you will see her name highlighted in blue (to the left of the post). Click on her name and a drop down menu will appear. One of the options on the drop down menu is "private message". Click on that and it will take you to a screen where you can write a private message to her, stating that you are done with your blocks and need her address. After composing your message, hit send and you are good to go.

Jclinganrey will then private message you back. There is a link at the very top of every page, a little towards the right that says "notifications". If there is a (1) after that, you have a private message. Click on the "Notifications" and it will take you to your private message.

I hope this helps! I am tech challenged and need to be hand held a lot, especially when it comes to working my smart phone :) Anyway, please don't hesitate to let me know if you need more help.

A couple of the blocks I made may be a bit of a stretch. If the group ((and I wouldn't be offended in the least)) feels some of the blocks are not light enough - not enough dark/light contrast - I will keep them for myself. No problem.

I was using this as a reference.

Even in the quilt above, IMHO, I think the block in the top left corner doesn't have enough light/dark contrast.

Whatever the group wants to do is fine with me.

Let me know and we will make a collective decision.

As Givio said, no, that was just an example. Please look through the pictures posted of scrappy Hunter's Star quilts or Google to find many examples.

We would love to have you join in the fun!!

I'll chime in.... personally, I love your blocks and think they are fine. As you said, I think the major issue is contrast, and as long as there is enough of a difference between the light and dark, we have a winner :) I would be delighted to receive any of your blocks!

I am the new kid in the group, but I think good contrast is important.

jclinganrey 08-08-2016 04:19 PM

OK. The collective group as spoken (sort of). Most importantly, please send what you've already made.

From this point forward, in the name of scrappiness, any light and any dark is fine as long as there is plenty of light/dark contrast is fine.

I certainly don't want the fact that someone doesn't have enough light fabrics keep them from participating. . Also, please send well hidden cash or $6.80 in stamps in your package. I will definitely put these additions in next month's posting.

Anything else - please let me know.

Definitely. Very important. Otherwise, we lose the pattern, right??

givio 08-08-2016 04:56 PM

Thanks, Jane, and group! I love that 'contrast only' decision, rather than a certain color for the lights! I really like the posted example--- mostly because there isn't any white/off white/white-on-white in it! lol I'll try to chime in next month. If I forget to sign up, please someone send me a private message to remind me. :-) Hint, hint, Jane...

Gannyrosie 08-08-2016 04:56 PM

Jane thanks for the pic, that helps a lot. Though I didn't make mine with a contrast, they are mostly made with the light sides being in the creams to whites, I like the look in the pic. Did I read right that that this will be the same block monthly? If so than I definitely will use the pic as a guide. Mailing out weds.

She must be using a tablet, cause when I am on my tablet it doesn't allow me to utilize all the sites tools as on the pc. So to send a PM I have to go to pc. If someone knows how to pm via a tablet let me know. I was using Chrome. Don't know if different in another app.
