Scrappy Hunter Star Block Swap

1 Attachment(s)
SCRAPPY HUNTER STAR BLOCK SWAP
Welcome to our Hunter Star block swap. I’ve hosted block swaps in the past and am excited to offer another swap. We will be making scrappy Hunter Star blocks 8 ½” unfinished using the easier method. ((see below)). I would like to see how much interest there is.

Please use any one print for the units shown in ‘gold’ and a white, white tone-on-tone or other light-colored fabric for the other half of the quilt block.

Print fabric: (same print per block)
4 ½” square

Light colored fabric: (same print per block) A very small print is okay.
4 ½” square

8 Half Square Triangles (HST’s) 2 ½” from the print/light background fabric.

We will be making these blocks in sets of six. You may make/send as many as 6 sets of six blocks (36 blocks) to be swapped.

The mailing deadline will be August 15[SUP]th[/SUP]. Please include $6.80 for a return Padded Flat Rate Envelope.
BE SURE to include your full mailing address. We will be making and swapping Hunter Star blocks each month so we all will have a great scrappy assortment for our quilts!!

Let’s get started!!

rbwiese 07-22-2016 04:04 PM

Do you have a link to the block in this size?

jclinganrey 07-22-2016 05:17 PM

Nope. There is no link. I provided a picture and measurements. Google Hunter Star quilts and you'll see lots of examples.

moonrise 07-22-2016 05:34 PM

These will make gorgeous quilts! I'd love to join, but let me see if I can get them made in time, first. Craft fair season is just around the corner, and I have sooooo much to do ... plus I'm in both groups in the Boom swap. Aaahhh! Not enough hours in the day! :p I'll let you know well before the mailing deadline. :)

jclinganrey 07-22-2016 06:27 PM

Moonrise!!! So nice to hear from you. Right now, I'm trying to get a 'feel' for how much interest there is. I'm thinking we would need at least 8-10 swappers for this to work well.

We'll see - - - - - -

JoKid03 07-22-2016 07:25 PM

You said each month we will make a set. How many months will this go for? Thanks

Jane Quilter 07-23-2016 12:38 AM

So we end up with a scrappy quilt made up of 36 same blocks times the number of months this goes on & ends up with what approx size quilt?

Jane Quilter 07-23-2016 12:39 AM

Thanks for choosing the easy pattern of hunters star.....

moonrise 07-23-2016 04:50 AM

Another question: Is the commitment by-the-month, or do we have to commit to a certain number of months? Thanks! :)

jclinganrey 07-23-2016 05:01 AM

Good questions, ladies - -

I will offer this monthly swap as long as people want to participate. There is no long-term commitment. It's month-to-month.

For example, if you make/swap 36 blocks/month x 6 months = 216 blocks!!! Wow!!!

That would make a king-sized quit approx. 108" square. ((and it would be gorgeous!!!))

Now you certainly don't HAVE to make 36 per month. That's just an example and you don't HAVE to necessarily participate for 6 months. So many variables!! So many decisions!!

You may participate as long as you like!

Hope that helps - - -

sewnclog 07-23-2016 08:59 AM

I have never participated in any swaps. Do all the hunter stars have to be the same? As in your example above-do all 6 have to be the same; gold and white? Or could they be 6 different colors; like one gold and white; one teal and white; etc?

Jannie 07-23-2016 07:38 PM

So are you saying every month will be a Hunter Star or each month will be a new block?

jacquie 07-24-2016 01:28 AM

Christine, that's gorgeous!! Really 'fresh' looking!!

Evie 07-24-2016 06:11 AM

Thinking about doing this.

Are the six blocks the same? Or should they be different?

Is August 15th the date we mail to you or ???

ManiacQuilter2 07-24-2016 06:13 AM

Thanks for the post!

glasqlts 07-24-2016 07:43 AM

I have been wanting to do a hunters star. count me in.

Yes, it's a beautiful quilt. I really like her work. Notice, however, it's the other technique using trapezoid units and lots of bias edges - - -

Each month you'd make & receive more scrappy Hunter Star blocks. You may participate as long as you like!

Evie - would love to have you participate! Your blocks should each be different; one red/light background, one purple/light, one yellow/light, etc.

Yes, August 15th is the mail-to-me date.

One more question: Should we make it a requirement (for consistency) that we use the HST method Jane states in post #1, as opposed to the method shown in Christine's post #13 http://hopefulhomemaker.com/2014/04/...-cake-pattern/ ? I think it would make a big difference if we use two different methods. Yes?

I saw she used a different method. I know you want us to use the method you posted on the first page. I just wanted to show how beautiful a scrappy hunter star would look with light background but all different fabrics for the darker color of the block. I am going to make a block to make sure it measures and looks good enough to swap. Will see if I get the chance tomorrow pulled a muscle in my back cleaning the windows on the outside of the house so the stairs to my sewing room were out of the question today.

jclinganrey 07-25-2016 07:15 AM

Yes, we're using the technique I posted on the first page (the easier technique). 2 4 1/2" squares and 8 2 1/2" HST's.

ljptexas 07-25-2016 08:27 AM

I've also been wanting to try the Hunter's Star. Sooo count me in. Think I could manage to make 6 each month... Say we make 1 set (6 blocks)... we receive as many sets as we send you?
I love, love the scrappy look...
How many, so far, have signed on?....

Evie 07-25-2016 09:13 AM

I'm going to make up a draft block using a 10-inch square. If it turns out good enough to swap I'm on board. Jane, I'll let you know by week's end.

QuilterMomma 07-25-2016 09:26 AM

I do so love the hunter star and making it scrappy is right up my alley. I have lots of scraps that would lend themselves (bigger ones) to hunter star. Unless I am missing something. I have to make six exactly the same? Could do that as well. Guess I am saying I could do this.

Hi Evie, I'm sure if you look at the first info post, it states that the square is 8.5" unfinished... not 10"...
Happy sewing, Jacquie x

Hi I am new I would like to join this swap.

Yes. If you send 6 blocks, you'll get 6 blocks in return. Hopefully, we'll have enough swappers that you won't get any of your own blocks back but that is a possibility, depending on how many swappers we have.

It would be best if each Hunter Star block is different - - - would make for a much scrappier quilt.

Evie - I think you could use a 10" square for each half of the block; one dark and one light. Keep in mind you'll need a 4 1/2" dark square
a 4 1/2" light square
and 8 HST's from the dark/light combo.

I want to play....count me in. This is my first swap....don't assume I know anything (except how to sew/quilt).

Jane Quilter 07-25-2016 02:20 PM

Any color preferences? (brights, fall, winter, spring, muted, etc. ) Any genre preferences? (civil war, modern, 1930's, holiday , baby etc) Or pull out of the bag all over scrappy?

jclinganrey 07-25-2016 02:41 PM

Pull-out-of-the-bag scrappy is just fine!

Glad t have you aboard.

That's what I plan on doing. I drafted the pieces on graph paper and it comes out just right. I'm pretty sure I'll do this, but I'll let you know for sure by end of the week.
