Thank you. I thought the comment about generosity was a bit rude. It's not that people are not generous (which I do not include money in my definition of that word) it's just that some people truly cannot do more.

Is it Oct 20th yet???????????????????//

Don't tell TruPeach1 that you aren't going to do something...
She'll coerce you into it.
Yes, I'm in.. :D
Let the fun begin :D he he (those of past SS know what this means he he)

The comment about generosity was NOT mean to be rude, what it WAS meant to convey is that some people are able to send more than the 4 fq's and the $20.00 gift and some are not able to. And that is ok. The new people who have not done this swap before may not be aware of this. Someone who may not get over the limit may feel slighted. the hostess has NO control over this. So if you will feel like you have been cheated because you SS was not able to extend past the limit DON"t sign up. This is meant to be a fun swap and to get to make new friends from across the US and our international friends so PLEASE ladies lets keep the pot stirring off of the public part of the forum and if you have an issue please contact the hostess.

Terri, hope I did not overstep my bounds on this post.

Psychomomquilter 09-29-2010 11:22 AM

Per conniequilts, I also am one that is not able to afford over $20, and included the mailing! but if its a problem, I will gladly cancel out of this secret pal santa. I have a fixed income, and have to watch what and how I spend!

Oh my you will not be sad this year. There is only me and my 2 children I have told them not to get me anything for Christmas for the past few years as they have student loans and medical bills to pay. I did SS last years as I thought that was all I was going to get in the way of any kind of Christmas pressie. I had the most wonderful Christmas. I was actually not going to open my pressie on opening day and wait for Christmas day but I couldn't resist. The members on this board are wonderful and no matter what is spent you can not put any monetary value on the LOVE that goes into the pressies that were sent to not just me but all the members who were in it.

If it helps anyone, I've been shopping yard sales looking for a gift for my person. Once I find out who it is, I'll be shopping estate sales to see if I can find a unique gift that doesn't cost a lot. Most of my little gifts won't be brand new (except the FQ's) but they'll be in good condition and something a quilter would enjoy. I don't think there was anything in the rules that said we have to buy new items, or spend over $20, so I think all it takes is a little creativity. :)

ckp11271 09-29-2010 11:45 AM

Sounds like fun! Sending a PM.

Short an Sweet 09-29-2010 11:46 AM

Amen, it's all about the excitement of something unknown and unexpected ( yes we're expecting the gift itself, but we don't know whats in it)

Exactly.

The other tip is find light weight things to save on shipping. The heavier it is the more it cost. I learned that the hard way. Also if there is a book in the package it is considered media mail. All you have to do is write MEDIA MAIL next to where the postage would go. Ask me how I know? I now try to include a book or magazine in all my mailings. What it cost in the regular postage by having it media mail I could use the money to buy the book or magazine. Hope I explained that correctly.

Please don't cancel out. This will be fun. It's the thought that counts not the cost. This will be my first secret santa swap, I'm looking forward to it.

Ditto! The thought is much more important than a silly price tag.

MEDIA MAIL can only be used for BOOKS AND DVD, (the media mail was set up for educational materials-as explained to me by post office when I was sending some magazines), you can not even have a note or letter included to send Media Mail. However, The post office does have Fixed Rate boxes for Priority Mail and you can use them for heavy items for domestic mail. You could send a book in a pkg. by itself Media Mail and other items in a separate package.

mack 09-29-2010 01:10 PM

Can you please tell me what is normally in a SS pack? I haven't done this before and it's a bit of a mystery to me!! Reading all your chat it seems that you are all part of some exciting secret club!

CajunQuilter2 09-29-2010 01:10 PM

Another thought for those of you who may have a Tuesday Morning in your area, there is a sewing/craft/quilting area in the store that have awesome discounts. There are different things at different stores but I have gotten acrylic templates that usually run $5-$6 at JoAnns for $1.00. Also have gotten sewing machine needles 2 pks for $1.00, rotary blades 2 pks for $3.00. So that is always an option to check out as well.

Now last year as excited as I was about receiving my pressie I was more excited about sending it. I had Star and to throw her off I sent her 2 packages. She didn't know which was from her SS and which was an imposter however they were both from me. There are REALLY tricky people on this board they will send the package to someone from another state and have them mail it so you don't know where it really is coming from.

It is not in the pressie you get it is in the fun you will have by reading the posts left each day on this thread and by the craziness that takes place once people start to get their boxes. I for one hate surprises and waiting once my package arrived I swear it was talking to me. Teri can even tell you her package would talk to her and taunt her to no end. In the end it really doesn't matter what the cost of the pressie was as I said above it is the fact that someone took the time, care and love to send it. So isn't it in the giving that is the most fun of all?
This is about poinsettias.......... There was little girl who had nothing to give the Christ Child on Christmas Eve so she gathered an arm full of weeds and placed them before the alter and before everyones eyes the weeds turned into beautiful red flowers, the poinsettia. It was said "EVEN THE MOST HUMBLE GIFT IF GIVEN IN LOVE WILL BE EXCEPTABLE IN HIS EYES" I hope since this is a religious quote it doesn't get deleted.

Don't feel left out I did last year but a week into it and I felt secure to post and man did I post a lot.

You will get a list of likes and dislikes of the person you will be SS to. Now you don't have to follow it it is a guide line. I am allergic to eveything so this way people will know that and not send me something I can't eat. They might say they like repro's or bright fabric. But once again it is a guide line. We are all quilters we all like fabric and anything quilty. Since I do quilt, sew and crochet no one ever made me anything because I could do it myself however it is nice to get something someone made special just for me. I have received the most special gifts made just for me from members of the board. I really like pincushions so in every swap I do even if it is only a FQ swap I include a pincushion made just for that person. It is usually a simple one nothing like the pincushions for the pincushion swap but I will read about them to see what they like. Once you get the name read their posts and profile you will get to know alot about a person that way. It is amazing how much people tell you without realizing it. When in dought get something you know you would like. I was unsure of the FQ swap I just did. I hoped the person liked what I picked out and then upon looking at it I thought if I got thoses FQ I would be happy so you do the same if you would like to receive it so would someone else.

trupeach1 09-29-2010 01:40 PM

SORRY TERI.................I feel like I have hijacked your thread with eveything I have been writing, but I get so excited about SS I can't help myself and the fingers just keep tying away.

Psychomomquilter 09-29-2010 01:42 PM

Ok ladies you have convinced me,I know its the thought that counts, I will NOT cancel out, I do have a lot of things I have sewn and make great gifts. thanks for the encouragement.

mack 09-29-2010 01:45 PM

Thank you for taking the time to explain all that. I thought from reading the comments that perhaps you sent fat quarters etc that the person then worked on themselves....just shows how wrong you can be!! Sounds like a fun thing to be involved in!

Oh goodness....don't even think of dropping out. Remember that you may end up with someone like me who is brand new at all of this!! I can't sew (I know..how do I quilt), can't cross stitch, embrod, etc. But I LOVE quilting. Something as silly as a cross stitching of my Name would make my day!!! I think alot of folks on here are SO talented that cost should be very minimal. I on the other hand will be more "talent challenged"....LOL! ;)

you DO send FQ's I think 5 read the rules on page 1 I don't remember if it was 4 or 5 FQ and also a pressie. The total is not to be more then $20 for the pressie and FQ's. Postage is extra.

Psychomomquilter 09-29-2010 02:14 PM

Thank you Gail
