September Scrappy Block Swap - Three Dudes in Batiks

SEPTEMBER - Scrappy Block Swap – THREE DUDES in BATIKS

Welcome to our swap! The main focus, as the name suggests, is scrappy blocks hopefully from our stash. There are a bazillion scrappy quilt block ideas available. I know! I counted them! Ha! We will be using amazing inspiration from the likes of Bonnie Hunter, Quilters Cache, Moda Bake Shop and many others. Each month I will present a pattern with a theme or color scheme and instructions.

This month we are making THREE DUDES quilt block and it will be a 12 ½” unfinished block using five
2 ½” strips. Please check out this video from Missouri Star Quilt Company for the concept and informative instructions:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5Ixvjje310

The color scheme for our block is Batik and solid white. Our quilt blocks will be larger than the block demonstrated in the video and will have a specific order to the strip sets:
Set 1: Batik/white/Batik/white/Batik
Set 2: white/Batik/white/Batik/white.
Cut strip sets to 12 ½” square units. Place the horizontal and vertical strips so the Batik and white overlap in the center. Sew according to the video. Trim to 12 ½”.

One set = 4 blocks. You may send as many as 6 sets. Please use ONE BATIK per block and your quilt blocks DO NOT have to be the same! In fact, the more variety, the better. Please use 100% cotton, quilt shop quality fabric to make your quilt blocks. Please pay attention to the back of your quilt blocks; pressing, snipping extra threads, etc. Be sure your quilt blocks are squared up, trimmed and even.
Please PM me to sign up. Please provide:

• QB screen name
• Real name
• Number of sets you are making/sending
• Email address

After I have received all of your information I will add you to the list of swappers. When you’re ready to mail your quilt blocks, please PM me and I will send you mailing information. BE SURE to include the USPS envelope WITH POSTAGE, filled out with your mailing information, in your package to me. Set(s) of D4P quilt blocks will be due by SEPTEMBER 30TH.
** Please label each quilt block**

Mailing: please put all blocks in one large plastic baggie along with your name and address on/in the bag. This will help protect your blocks in case your package is damaged. Please use a USPS Priority Mail® Padded Flat Rate Envelope (9 ½” x 12 ½”), buy $5.95 in POSTAGE, put postage on your return envelope and fill out your name/address etc. This will be your return envelope so be sure to put this in your package as well!

Basic swap rules may be found here: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-20154-1.htm

MY MISTAKE!!! The due date is OCTOBER 30th. So sorry.

Jane

JuanitaBean 09-03-2014 10:10 PM

What size of strip did you cut so you will get 12 1/2" sq.

jclinganrey 09-04-2014 06:38 AM

It should make a 10 1/2" strip set, not 12 1/2". I need to proof the proof before posting. Man, oh man. . . . .

From each strip set, cut a 10 1/2" square unit and proceed from there.

I need some coffee - - -

Jane

jaba 09-04-2014 07:31 AM

I'll see what I can come up with, love those batiks!

rbwiese 09-04-2014 08:13 AM

I am kinda green about this, but I want to make sure -
2 1/2 strips make a 10 1/2 block
Is white to be a batik or just white
Due Oct 30

Thanks

Thanks

So glad to have you!!! Please note my couple of screw ups in the initial instructions; trying to get them ironed out so it reads correctly.

I encourage you to watch the video as it gives lots of great instruction on the concept of this block. We're making our bigger however. We're sewing two different sets of 5 strips each in the order listed in the 1st post. Those will be cut into 10 1/2" strip units. Lay right sides together, making sure a Batik strip is on top of a white strip. That's what will create the quarter triangle square in the center!! Cool, huh?? Follow the rest of the instructions in the video. Trim to 12 1/2". Voila!

Now if I could only write the instructions correctly the first time, things would be so much better. Oh well, thanks everyone for putting up with me - - - -

Jane

jclinganrey 09-04-2014 02:58 PM

Oh! To answer your other question, we're using a solid white.

Doing just fine Miss Jane, haven't started mine yet, working on other swaps. Finished today so may start on these tomorrow after I freeze some tomatoes from the garden. This is a never ending job right now, but worth it in the winter!

Jane I don't know what I'm doing wrong.....made 4 today and cutting 10 1/2" squares, sew together, cut the X, sew back together...everyone of them are just a tad over 13 1/2". If I trim to 12 1/2" all the points will be cut off . Can you tell me how you got 12 1/2" blocks from these measurements???

Quilt Lover Grandma 09-07-2014 06:35 AM

Agreeing with Jaba

I am doing the same thing. maybe we should leave all the blocks this size. My husband who is a new quilter saw that this would happen right away. I would rather have the points. I love this block.

glasqlts 09-07-2014 07:49 AM

hi Jane, hoping to join you on this one, after all the kinks are ironed out!!! LOL I am getting so many UFOs out of this group that I many have to slow down a bit for a while. Hate to stop it is so much fun to do and see what comes back.

I don't want to cut the points either, hoping to hear from Jane soon.

jclinganrey 09-08-2014 08:24 AM

I worked Fri/Sat/Sun so was 'out of commission' for a few days - - -

Yes, I agree. Let's trim the blocks to 13 1/2" unfinished, keeping the points. So the block will be 13" finished. Kind of an odd size, but, no matter.

Problem solved! Thanks everyone!

Jane

Sounds good to me!

jaba 09-12-2014 05:13 PM

Why is everything posting double today??? Anybody have a clue?

Quilt Lover Grandma 09-13-2014 09:38 AM

They are beautiful. Really a striking quilt. I hope lots of folks are signing up! I have three made and all of them cut out. Mailing the Trip blocks on Monday. A 5 day stint in the hospital put me a bit behind. Barbara

Annaquilts 09-16-2014 08:03 AM

Interested but very confused about the directions. How wide are the original strips to be cut? Are they 2 1/2 inches wide? Then cut 13 1/2 inch squares from those strips?

jclinganrey 09-16-2014 08:15 AM

QLG - hope you're okay now. Will be looking for your scrappy trips package - - -

So sorry for the confusion. I asked Patrice to edit my original post but nothing yet. Sigh - - -

Sew two strip sets as in the picture. Cut each to 10 1/2" square. Layer according to instructions; sew 1/4" around all sides; cut diagonally from both corners. Arrange block to make the quarter square in the center. Trim to 13 1/2" unfinished.

Again - apologies for the confusion.

Janice McC 09-20-2014 06:22 PM

Hi Jane, I'd LOVE to join this one but unfortunately a lot of my time isn't my own right now. But, if by the end of this coming week I can see my way clear to making at least 4 sets, I'll pm you right before the deadline to sign up. Wish i could be certain now but I'll have to see what this next week brings. Also, a question: are you requesting any particular solid white? Would Kona White do?

I was in the hospital in May and then again in August/September. Now my husband is in and I am afraid that this does it for my participation in the Three dudes in batiks swap. Sorry, but I have met my match. Barbara

hi Jane, I was going to lay low for a while, I have sooo many UFO's to try to do. You caught me though!! I have the first set done and will try to do as many as possible. My scrappy trips is still in pieces and will probably have to stay that way for a while. I hope to see more names on the 3 dudes list, come on ladies lets get sewing.

jclinganrey 10-10-2014 10:21 AM

LOL glasqlts!!! You're so funny and thank you. Yes - - - - we need more swappers. How to get more swappers. Hhhhmmm - - - is there a virtual sandwich board I can wear to get more folks to jump in?? That would be quite a sight, huh?

Honestly, how do we get more swappers?? I'm scratching my head here, ladies.
