sign up open for January - June 2021 Round Robin

This Round Robin will begin with a center medallion of approx. 18”. Each person will make their center and send it on to the next participant, who will add on a border, in the style and/or theme of the center block (or completely different but complimentary.)

Each person in turn adds another border that compliments the quilt. Once the quilt has made the rounds to all participants it is mailed back to the original owner. You will be mailing to the same person each round.

Each border should be not more than 6" wide. We are experienced quilters. If you slap on a plain border because the piece needs a plain border, add something like applique. Don't be lazy on someone else's piece.

Mail date for the centers is January 15. After that, we will mail monthly to the next participant on the list, until all borders are on. Once completed the quilts will be mailed back to their originators.

All board rules for swaps apply to this swap as well. Rules For Swaps And Similar Activities - Updated 8 December 2010 - Quiltingboard Forums

Sign up open until 12.31.20, 6 people per group.

I am on the sidelines again. I want to see another Round Robin before I commit. The last Round Robin was a huge learning experience for me.

sewbizgirl 12-15-2020 01:21 PM

May I make a few suggestions to help this RR run smoother than the last one? We learned a lot from that first RR!

I would suggest there be a limit on extra fabric and items sent, if the group is in agreement. This was an issue in the first RR swap. Some people only were sending the quilt top (which I recommend) and others added gobs of extra fabric to be used, journals, even a magazine. All these things being mailed so many times gets really expensive. The swap shouldn't require more than a padded FRE to mail it to the next person, except maybe in the case of the very last round. If the quilt is big it may require the more expensive box to mail that last round. Some rules such as this could help everyone be on the same page with expectations.

Also, some people have the expectation of a matchy quilt (each round matching what is already on the quilt) and others expect each round to be different. These expectations need to be discussed up front. They don't have to be the same for each person, but maybe include a note stating what you would like (matchy or differing rounds) and everyone try to live up to that.

And my last suggestion is that each member commit to reading every post in the thread. This is another thing that will help keep everyone on the same page and be aware of any changes in direction that come up. Last RR, some people missed some vital info, simply because they were not reading the thread.
Subscribe to your thread, and read new posts daily.

Mona asked for some organizational help, so there it is! My two cents....

Mona G 12-15-2020 03:34 PM

Thanks so much SBG for your comments on how to make it run smoother.

mjpEncinitas 12-16-2020 10:48 AM

I have to admit I’m tempted. However I’m worried about the time commitment. The first six months of next year are slated for booms and finishing two quilts (as I lose access to my sweet 16 in September)

SBG or anyone else who did the last round robin; . How long did it take to finish the first and last round?. I know I’ll have to triple that time to complete due to my turtle like progress in the booms. :)

But I’m retired and have more time to quilt. I end up quilting about 8 hours a week. I’m wondering how much more I would need to add each week.

thanks Mona for organizing. I would probably add an applique round to most projects. I also just bought a book on some fun 6 “ quilt squares.

Mona G 12-16-2020 10:59 AM

MJP - I'm not a fast sewer either. We have 4 weeks to finish each round, once I figured out what I was going to do the actual sewing didn't take that much time.

Barb, we would love to have you join us.

sewbizgirl 12-16-2020 12:49 PM

MJP, the first round is small, so it doesn't take much time at all. The last round is the most time consuming, if you do a nice round that size. What can eat up most of your time can be trying to figure out what you will do to continue the quilt. If you think too long, you're out of time. Or you could procrastinate because you think you have plenty of time, and then when it slips away you are left wondering what happened. And don't forget the post office is going to eat up at least one of your weeks. So you actually end up with about 3 weeks to decide what to do and then do it.

Give it a try! Everyone should have at least one RR quilt under their belt!

givio 12-16-2020 06:23 PM

I agree with SBG. Absolutely allow extra time for mailing. The post office has their share of covid cases and problems and priority mail is not always as fast as it used to be.

If you have to have a top in hand for inspiration, it will take you longer to do your round. If you are content with seeing a picture of the previous round and can make up your mind what to do while you are waiting on postal delivery you will be better off.

There are too many factors to say the first round took X amount of hours and following rounds took X hours or added X amount of time. Concept planning, fabric choice, pattern, execution, etc., can be short or long depending on who you are and what your level of desire is for what you want to do.

Everybody knows a 4" block with 20 pieces is going to take longer than a 4" patch you can rotary cut! To think up something really unique and imaginative can take 10 minutes or days of mulling things over, depending on lots of things-- a person's background, education, creativity, skill, experience, resources. On the other hand, thinking up something that satisfies you to add can be really quick and easy to sew without regard to any of those things.

I would say I spent sooo much time just taking a picture of my rounds! lol That seemed harder to me than thinking up what to sew!

For the sewing, once I began, it didn't take more than a few days, until I got to the last round, and if I hadn't made about 20 individual paper patterns with crazy little pieces that had to be cut individually, then that round would not have taken so long either. I'd say if you have a full time job like I do, then give yourself a couple of weekends where you have uninterrupted time and that should be enough time. If you are retired and home all the time, a month ought to be plenty of time to do any of the rounds.

The fun and adventure in sewing is such a treat with a RR. I echo SBG, definitely give it a try!

Mona G 12-17-2020 01:50 PM

I think I will be doing a NY Beauty for my center. I've always wanted to do this pattern and I think this would be the perfect medium. now I just need to find the right fabric.

jacquie 12-17-2020 03:42 PM

Hi, Just a question... The postage date will be 15th each month? Is that correct?
This means we would only have 3 weeks to work on each round? Due to mail travel time...

Mona G 12-17-2020 04:00 PM

Yes, mail on the 15th or before each month.

hav4boys 12-17-2020 05:10 PM

Thank Bonnie for the tips. I am paper-piecing a moose for my center square and am excited to see what everyone chooses to add. Never thought beyond that so they are very helpful.

sewbizgirl 12-17-2020 07:30 PM

Mona, is this swap open internationally? I would think it too risky, let alone expensive and time consuming, to mail the quilts out of the U.S.
Each quilt will be mailed 6 times, so 6 international postage fees, and 6 chances at the quilt being lost or delayed while out of country. Plus, I don't think tracking is available internationally.

jacquie 12-18-2020 03:20 AM

I've taken part twice with Round Robins on this forum in the past and we never had any issues. Its was a great experience for everyone. No problems with packages travelling etc. I was able to track my package moving around the US right up to the front door.

This has always been an international quilting forum where we took part in swaps, enjoyed eath others 'virtual' company, talents and mutural love of quilting.

sewbizgirl 12-18-2020 06:50 AM

I am just lurking and offering observations and advice... but I wouldn't agree to my quilt being sent overseas. THere are probably enough people in each country to do their own RRs.

New York Beauty

Hi all, I didn't know what a New York beauty was but the images on bing are fantastic, and it opens up the borders to some WONDERFUL possibilities for sure. I don't mind the person after me being international, the six posts would be all my cost. I just shipped 3 packages internationally, one to my gf in AU, one to my gf in Chile, and one to my December pal to Europe (just in case she is lurking LOL). I have always figured 2 weeks for international, and 3 to AU (although it has arrived once in a while in 10 days). It just means a shortened turnaround time for me and my recipient, and that's ok. I do agree that it is a nice gesture to post photos so the person after you can get some ideas and inspiration while you are working on yours. My last round was definitely in conjunction with the ideas of one last border by the recipient, she will be adding a header and showed me the colors of her intended last border, so I chose my border colors and design so as to coordinate with her intent and the overall quilt design. I also created a private album for photos of my progress so my recipient could start the creative juices before receiving the quilt. And yes, I would figure on two weekends of sewing/ cutting/ planning, that gives one weekend for a cushion and the last one is mailing. I'm very excited again, my top turned out great and I can't wait to see this next round robin.

Rebaquilts 12-18-2020 07:32 AM

I loved having everyone write a little about themselves in the journal I sent and getting back the signed quilt label. I got back some wonderful photos of the gals in my group, of their sewing rooms, of their lives and of their inspiration, I will keep and treasure that forever. I think if the group decides it is ok to send extra fabric, that should also be a group decision. I loved having background fabric for the top and some coordinating fabrics. I know some people like every border in their top to be 100% different and I think that is perfectly ok, and I have no problem with that, but my preference is to tie things in with a coordinating fabric. I like to use at least one of the center fabrics in each of my borders if it is possible. I searched 5 different stores to find a coordinating green polka dot fabric for one of the rounds that matched a center fabric to go into my border for one of the rounds. Of course, I am also ok with messaging the owner of the center for additional coordinating fabric for my borders if we agree not to send additional fabric with the packages. I don't mind the extra fabric because I don't mind the extra shipping, which is why I volunteer to ship internationally if someone wants to sign up from overseas, put them after me in the shipping order. Hugs all!!

I’m going to have to sit this one out. I went back and looked at all the glorious pictures of the last round robin. I have a couple worries for me.:

I just don’t think my skills are up to doing those small blocks quite yet.
Our hospitals have run out of beds due to Covid and my family has decided to limit shopping trips etc. My stash isn’t big enough to accommodate RR needs. Do you think this is a good excuse to increase my stash for the next round robin? :)

Mona I was considering sending a simplified NY beauty block Id already made. I made two of them for medallion quilts. I’ve started one of the medallion quilts, so I’ll work on that. I’ll save the other NY beauty block for the next time someone does a round robin. Oops after taking the picture I see I’ve already started the borders on that one too. I used a Craftsy class to learn how to make the NYbeauty

I’ll be lurking in the background, getting motivated by your wonderful ideas to finish these medallion quilts. Enjoy the round robin.

Beautiful MJP
I also don't mind shipping international. I was part of an international RR several years ago and didn't have any issues.

Yes, the RR is open to everyone. Once the group is finalized the group will decide if we need to change the mail dates for the larger rounds to give us more sewing time due to the mail delays all over the world.

Mona, I really want to join but will need to let you know for sure on Monday. I am getting a 2nd opinion on my thumb/wrist and as long as he doesn't say I need surgery, I would love to be part of the new group if there is still room. I am fine with international as well. I'll keep you updated.

I've had 2 cortisone injections in different places and neither has helped at all. The first doctor said there isn't really anything else we can do. It isn't that I want to have surgery, but I would like to see if the second doctor has any other ideas. I figure if I have to live with the pain I might as well have fun sewing and the last Round Robin was a bright spot for me in my sewing room. :)

Yeah! So happy to have you in this group, and I have to say, I love Scotland, I'm an Outlander fanatic, read all the books and subscribe to Starz just for this series. Went there a few years ago to do the sights and swam in Loch Ness (brrrrr). Hugs!!

jacquie 12-19-2020 01:32 AM

That's amazing! Glad you loved your visit! As well as loving quiltng I'm a Munro bagger (mountains in scotland over 3000ft) There are 282 of them all around Scotland and the islands, I'm up to 77 and getting to REALLY see this beautiful country in all of it's glory.
Thank you for making me feel so welcome and can't wait to find out more about you and the rest of our lovely group!

1 done, 3 more to go. I see I need to fix the ends of the top arch so I don't lose the points. This is the first time I did curved pieces like this.

Mona, It's GORGEOUS!!!
My DH has asked for a Barn pictorial quilt centre... (he's american)
So I've had to get my sketch book out and all my scraps to see what I could come up with... No pressure ladies!! 🤣
Not sure how it's going to look, we'll see...

Mona that looks great! I have always wanted to make that block but no matter how many times I've tried I can't get the curved seams to lay flat.

I have a block picked out (thinking positive that I can participate!)...it is called Entwined Star. It is only 12" so I'll either do the math to make it 18" or add borders...it will be done in shades of red w/black. My plan is to use it as a quilt for my daughter.

Jacquie, that is turning out great! I was hired to make a wall hanging using some fabric the lady had gotten. I used the "hole in the barn door" block. I am in Iowa which is a big farming state so sure I'll be able to find some fabrics that will work well. :)
