Think Spring Paper Pieced Block Swap With a "Twist" - Signup is Closed
"All Things Spring" Paper Pieced Block Swap with a "Twist"! Are you getting a bit tired of winter and snow and maybe ready for a bit of Spring in your life? Do you love paper piecing, or want motivation to give it a try? Do you like to make friends and share ideas? Then I hope you'll consider signing up for this swap! Theme: All things Spring!!! Blocks will be grouped in sets of 4, same pattern, different fabrics okay (all blocks will be swapped out) Use spring colors (greens, pinks, lavenders, blues & yellows) in pretty pastel shades with white/white on white backgrounds for this swap to keep them cohesive! This is not a bright swap, nor is it a muted swap...let's keep our colors crisp and pretty for spring! :) You may make up to six sets or 24 blocks total to exchange. All blocks will be swapped out. There is a limit of 4 blocks of any one design without prior permission. Block sizes may range from 4 1/2" unfinished to 8 1/2" unfinished. This allows you to find a large variety of patterns to work with, and there are lots of free ones on the internet. Keep the papers on!Blocks must be constructed of prewashed 100% good cotton fabrics (no muslin, flannel, see through or poly blends) & haveĽ” seam allowances with no open areas or “holes” where fabric was not caught in a seam. This also includes tears, or cuts in fabrics and blocks. Please make blocks that you want to keep...that's a good indication that others will love what you've made! :) When stitching your blocks, make sure you use a tiny stitch length to allow the papers to be removed easily. Okay, now for the Paper Pieced "Twist"! You may also make up to 3 sets (four per set) or 12 blocks of 3 ˝” paper pieced blocks with the same Spring theme if you like. These will only be swapped out with other 3 ˝” paper pieced blocks. They are not part of the original swap, but are an additional swap or “twist”! Same rules apply to these block sets as above…only one set of any one design, and if you join in the “Twist”, you must have different designs than the regular Block Swap blocks. Packaging and Labelling your block sets Every block needs to be labelled in some fashion, with your real name and user name included. Each set of blocks needs to be enclosed in it’s own ziplock type baggie. Package well and send your best method taking into account that the post office isn’t always gentle on packages. Mailing Sometimes packages arrive with tears in some envelopes, so take care in your packaging so I get everything you send to me. I encourage you getting delivery confirmation…this will allow you to track your package and know when it arrives. I cannot be responsible for packages lost in the mail. I will post on this thread as packages arrive. Please include proper return postage. I will mail your blocks back to you in padded flat rate envelopes, which I will provide. The cost will be $5.95, as the cost of priority mail will be going up as of Jan. 27th, 2013. An enclosed priorty stamp is best, but I will also accept well hidden cash if you prefer. Please do NOT include delivery confirmation! I have a shipping program that allows me to do this for FREE! No return mailing labels are required either, as long as I can read clearly your address on your package. Signups will be open through February 28[SUP]th[/SUP] with blocks to be in my hands by March 18[SUP]th[/SUP]. Blocks will be swapped and mailed back to you as quickly as possible after blocks have been received. I am interested in signing up, but will you give examples of color schemes. I have pastels but mostly 1930's type prints and they might be too muted. Another question, can you clarify what type of blocks the 4.5-8.5 sized blocks should be, these should be regular pieced blocks only right? and the twist is for only paper-pieced blocks? This will work well with a current project I am working on to add to the blocks I already have. Another question: Would the 4.5 inch blocks be swapped one for one with larger 8.5 blocks, or 2:1?

Quiltingmommy, thanks for your great questions! I will try and answer as best I can. To clarify, the entire swap is for paper pieced blocks...the twist is 3 1/2" unfinished blocks being swapped with 3 1/2" blocks. They are not part of the regular swapping. Some people don't like to swap 3 1/2" blocks, but there are so many cute patterns, so I've included them as a "twist" to swap seperately. In the regular PP swap, you will have the flexibility of making blocks from 4 1/2" unfinished ( 4" finished) sizes up to and including 8 1/2" (8" finished) size blocks. One of the challenges (but also one thing that's so cool about it) with paper pieced blocks is that there really isn't a standard size to use as with regular quilting with the 12 1/2" unfinished blocks. You will find when you look at patterns, a fairly wide range of sizes, so to give swappers more choices, I am allowing for the most commonly used sizes. When using your paper pieced blocks, it's easy to add borders to make them work with whatever sized blocks you desire in a variety of applications. Because I have no way of knowing who will join and what patterns people will be making, I can't guarantee that you will get exactly the size you send in, only for the twist. 4 1/2" unfinished blocks won't be swapped at 2 for one. There are many paper pieced small blocks that are far more involoved and intricate than some larger blocks and take more time to make. It just depends upon the pattern, but I can tell you that I will strive to swap the blocks out in as fair a way as I possibly can? I will try as best I can to make everyone happy. :) I've even been known to throw in extra blocks and goodies just because it's fun for me! :)
Okay, here are a couple of pictures to give you an idea of what I'm thinking colorwise. The first picture shows pastels with a white on white for backgrounds and the second picture shows more muted colors which I think are very pretty, but not what I had in mind for this particular swap. They remind me more of fallish, but not spring colors. I hope this helps everyone to better answer questions? Again, thanks Quiltingmommy for your great questions! |

Thery're great! :) I'm always in the market for more patterns! To answer your question...No your blocks don't have to be spring designs...you can do other blocks, including traditional if you wish, they just have to be paper pieced and in spring colors so they will all work together. Also, if you choose to do a design that obviously needs more than one block to be stitched together to have the finished design, then please finish it out and send in the finished block with however many completed segments it takes? Did that make sense? For instance...Carol Doakes has lots of geometric patterns, and some more floral in nature can stand alone, but a lot of them you don't really get the complete design until you stitch 4 units together. I hope that makes sense? :) |
