Winter Dear Jane Block Swap.

Colors/Theme: Winter themed. Colors are pretty much blue, white, and silver. Prints are perfectly fine to use.
Fabric: Fabric: 100% cotton but does not need to be LQS. Use the golden rule with selecting your fabric. And of course washed and pressed to avoid shrinkage is a must. As well as carefully squaring your blocks.
Please post here which block you will be making so I can keep a running list for the group. I’m posting an attachment that shows the difficulty levels of the blocks, try to pick one that best matches your abilities.

***To sign up***
Please PM me and tell me how many sets and of which pattern you plan to submit. Most likely I will not allow duplicates unless we have A LOT of people sign up.

the UNFINISHED size is 5.0 inches

You'll make 12 blocks, (all the same pattern) and send them to me along with a self addressed, stamped envelope for return postage... whatever it cost to send it to me, it will cost to return your blocks to you...so be sure to put enough postage on your envelope. When you are ready to send them to me, please pm me and I'll give you my address.

I will send you back one of your blocks and one each of 11 different blocks. I’m sending you back one of your own because I will use it to match up a set for you.

Please mark EACH ONE of your blocks with a little slip of paper pinned to it or a sticky label with your ***board name*** and if you want to, your real name. It is nice to know who made the blocks in your quilt.
If you want to make multiple sets, just make sure you have 12 blocks of each pattern. You will receive back as many as you send.

Important Dates:
Sign-ups and block selections end: November 15th.

Please contact me if you have not completed all the blocks you promised by December 15th.

Blocks need to be postmarked by: January 2nd ((International swappers may need allow extra time for mailing.))

I will mail the blocks back to you by January 15th.

Late Blocks: Will be sent back to you and not included in the swap. Please let me know if you'll be unable to meet the deadline.

Additional note: You will need to have a copy of Dear Jane, either the book or the software for this swap. This is simply for the patterns. OR the ability to accurately draft the patterns by looking....

By "silver" - do you mean the metallic print on fabrics

or do you mean a pale gray fabric

or either/both?

bookworm 09-07-2010 09:38 AM

Either/both

Really good question. Sorry about that

sewhappy30 09-07-2010 02:03 PM

I'm going to find the book and look at the blocks.

bearisgray 09-07-2010 02:32 PM

It is definitely worth looking at the book before purchasing it.

The book has line drawings of the blocks - drawn "in the manner of. . "

Some of the drawings do not appear to match the pictures of the blocks.

There are NO templates and NO instructions on how to assemble the blocks in the book (unless it has been revised in the last year or so)

bookworm 09-07-2010 02:46 PM

I do not believe that it has been revised in the last year or so. I could be wrong. My copy only has the drawings.

bookworm 09-07-2010 03:11 PM

To get us started, I'm going to do 2 sets.

one of A-6 Uncle Homer
one of C-12 Family Reunion

sewhappy30 09-07-2010 03:32 PM

I would definately have to have cutting instructions. I'm doing the Farmer's Wife on here and someone is doing the rotary cutting directions thank goodness or I wouldn't be able to make it.

I'm not real fond of templates either.

bookworm 09-07-2010 03:37 PM

Sewhappy30, I'd be happy to help you work out cutting instructions if you choose to join. Just let me know. :)

bearisgray 09-07-2010 03:45 PM

There are several blocks that are "easy" - just squares and rectangles - hurry up and claim them.

Jennifer 09-07-2010 04:46 PM

Please sign me up for F7, I2 and H1. I may sign up for an additional set but I don't want to bite off more that I can chew to early.

sewhappy30 09-07-2010 04:55 PM

I looked on a website and seen all the blocks. I really like these blocks. They are so pretty. But they have so many pieces per block, some has as many as 28 pieces per block I noticed, wow. That's a lot for only a 5" unfinished block.

Bookworm thanks for willing to help me out with the rotary cutting instructions, I will order the book if you will help me.

I would like to make E10 Five and Dime.

I see that it has 6 pieces, I'm sure I will need a template for the 2 melon pieces. So can you help me with that and the cutting directions? if so, count me in.

After I see how this one turns out I might be able to do another one.

wilhelmina 09-07-2010 06:55 PM

Count me in for D-3, D-6 and M-13. :)

bookworm 09-07-2010 07:06 PM

Awesome this is already starting to come together. I've got a copy of the grid from page 12 sitting next to me and highlighting the blocks as they are selected. :)

Linda58 09-08-2010 11:07 AM

I would like to join the swap, are there any beginner blocks left? I need easy if I don't have rotary cutting instructions.

I will order the book today on amazon if there are beginner blocks left.

fabric_fancy 09-08-2010 11:14 AM

i'm in i'll do one set of the following 3 blocks - for a total of 3 sets

B2
B3
C11

bookworm 09-08-2010 11:14 AM

There's quite a few blocks left. It looks like a fair amount of the claimed ones are intermediate. Take a look at the attachment and the activity page. At quick glance alot of the B's are beginner.

sewhappy30 09-08-2010 02:39 PM

I was advised to order the software instead of the book, because I need the cutting and measuring instructions, which the book does not have.

So I ordered the software today and got an email that it has already shipped. Can't wait to receive it.

I did a practice block of E10- Five and Dime, and it turned out 5" square. Now I can go shopping and get my fabric to make the 12 I need to do. Yeah!!

wvdek 09-08-2010 04:24 PM

I'll sit by and watch this one as we already did this last Dec/Jan. Blocks turned out great. We did blue/white/silver too. Have fun!

starshine 09-08-2010 08:25 PM

I'd like to participate. If I read the chart correctly D 13 is field of dreams. Can I sign up for that block? I loved the movie.

bookworm 09-09-2010 06:28 AM

Its all yours starshine :)

LaurieE 09-09-2010 10:13 AM

I'd like to sign up for J-6 and B-4.

Amazon.com

Carsey 09-10-2010 02:36 PM

Laurie: Thank you for the web sites. I just ordered the book, cd and templates from softexpression for $73.99 and shipping for $6.90 for a total of $80.89. That was the cheapest I could find.

After I get the book and figure out which blocks I want to do, I will sign up for this swap.

Also, Linda thanks for the help!!

Jennifer22206 09-10-2010 05:42 PM

Can I join in on the fun please?
I'd like to make:
B5, I8 and K12 please.

Sending you my info now.

bookworm 09-10-2010 09:47 PM

I'm trying to decide if I'm going to commit to a third set...

Depending on how this swap goes I may run "seasonal" ones... be a fun way to work on the Dear Jane :)

Jennifer22206 09-10-2010 09:57 PM

Thank you for letting me join in on the fun. I'd love more dear Jane swaps! One of my ultimate goals is to have a DJ quilt made of swap blocks right next to the one I worked on.

Quick question though - in any given set of 12 blocks do we have to use the same fabrics or can we vary them? I'm planning on starting mine tomorrow

bookworm 09-10-2010 09:59 PM

Varying the fabrics is fine. I know mine will be scrappy :)

retrogirl02 09-11-2010 05:54 AM

Meredith, thank you so much for your kind post. I've been posting them on my blog which is more work than I'd expected. With 20 blocks to go, I'm doing a block a day (or at least thats the plan) to finish on my birthday. I'll take a bit of time off and then I'll be ready to start my triangles. I think this swap could be an excellent diversion. =)

sandpat 09-11-2010 06:42 PM

I did this swap last year...I need to pull out my blue/white blocks and figure out if I need more...hmmm...thinking about it.

Come on Patti, :D at least one set...I am thinking of making a small lap quilt, I will set them on point with a blank block in between. Or...I will make a tablerunner...

sandpat 09-12-2010 05:34 AM

Wil, I made a table runner last year from the Christmas Jane blocks. It really turned out great. I used 2 sets for that one (we made 18 per set last year) I was soo tired of blocks at that point that I only did 1 set of the blue ones..so I'm not sure whether I need more or not. If I use some blanks mixed in, well..maybe not...I'm still thinking
