How about maybe making some of those neck pillows for folks too. Your "dog loving friends" would probably enjoy the fabric and you have a nice gift. The following videos are not in English, but they are so easy to follow.

Make small dog quilts and donate them to the animal shelter. It gives them something soft to lay on in their cage and they go "home" with them when they're adopted. I make them approx. 21 X 30 inches, they fit in their cage nicely & I can make four using a crib size batting pkg that I buy at Joann's with a coupon.
