My NEW sewing room--in the basement

9 Attachment(s)
I posted a couple of weeks ago asking for advice about moving my sewing room to the basement. Well, over the weekend we did it. :) We first moved the treadmill to my husband's workshop, then moved all my sewing stuff downstairs. Got it semi-arranged, knowing there needed to be a LOT of storage. Then we went to my brother's for my nephew's birthday, and saw these amazing 'cubbies' that they had the kids' toys stored in--they got them at Ikea, so it was off to Ikea for us, since these would be PERFECT for a sewing room!

The ultimate plan is to replace the thin piece of carpet with something else--not sure what. And my DH is going to put in a 'real' ceiling, probably a drop ceiling with MORE lights.
Also, I have a wall hanging which should be coming back from the quilting lady SOON, so that will get hung up in the room too which will add color. :)

I'm going to post the pictures as 'before' and 'after'--before being the initial move of the sewing stuff, and after being once everything is in place and organized!

First picture--my table with machine.

AFTER we got new stuff:

The 'cutting table corner', before.

Cutting corner AFTER. I rotated the table to the other wall.

Storage corner, before.

Storage corner, after. These are fantastic for storage!

View from the doorway into the room.

My husband's workshop is through the door to the right of my book/fabric shelf.
Another shot of the cutting corner--put the dog bed in there for my dog. :)

In the above photo you can see a little of what's outside my room--our family room has double doors to outside, so it's not extremely 'basement-like'.

My crochet storage area--bottom is yarn, top shelf is thread (my favorite). I got a table top ironing board from Ikea so my regular ironing board doesn't take up floor space, and can stay upstairs for ironing hubby's shirts.

Thanks for taking a tour of my new sewing room! I love it!

You did a great job. Everything looks so fresh and orderly. You'll have lots of fun in that room.

What kind of carpet is it? If it's something you can iron on, I would leave it for now. I like to iron my quilt sandwich when I'm using fusible batt on the carpet in my basement. It gives me a nice big surface and I don't have to worry about damaging it because it's old anyways. Just a thought, of course you can do what works for you. Your new space is looking GOOD!

Those are called "Expedit" cubbies, and the actual bookshelf unit is "Billy".

Its beginning to look like an awesome sewing room!!..

If you have space in the center of the room- make/create/buy a island and a big cutting mat to cover it.. ive seen somewhere someone had gotten 4 filing cabinets each facing out in four directions, got plywood to cover them and topped it with a really big cutting mat- that made their table..

You are going to just love all that space, and in the summer its so nice and cool, your dog will love it! Never regreted moving mine to the basement.

deedum 02-13-2012 05:27 PM

Wow! I love it too! I dream of how I would design my sewing room, if I ever could make one from a clean slate.

NanaCsews2 02-13-2012 06:00 PM

Love the space, can you hear the jealousy in my voice? Are you going to put fabric or shades or something down the front of the cabinets with the fabric? Might dust from the workshop come in?

spartan quilter 02-13-2012 06:03 PM

What a gorgeous sewing area you have created for yourself. Enjoy and share photos of your creations.

It's looking fantastic! Bright and cheery, especially for a basement. Wish we had those here, I could use one! And I love, love, love IKEA. Thank goodness it's two hours away, or I'd be broke. Those shelves are terrific. Have fun in your new space.

RonieM 02-14-2012 05:48 AM

I love your sewing room. Great use for storage. Show up in 6 months how you have continued to fill it up! Happy sewing in your own space.

Iggys Mom 02-14-2012 06:08 AM

Woman Cave...........yes, it is great. Job well done.

glorcour 02-14-2012 06:31 AM

Wouldn't we all love a space like yours. Lucky you!

annthreecats 02-14-2012 06:37 AM

I love your new space.

The only thing I would change would be to have your cutting table out in the open so you can walk around it. I find that I use both sides of my cutting table depending on what I'm doing. I also spread my projects out on it when I need to and need both sides open.

Have fun.

Karen Mc 02-14-2012 06:43 AM

Very nice!

Yes, that's my goal, once I find something I like better for cutting. It will definitely be accessible from all four sides.

grannyp70 02-14-2012 07:48 AM

tmw 02-14-2012 08:13 AM

i love all that space you have, i can see alot of stuff in there.[a nice chair, tv.]. you might want to raise your cutting table, to save your back,, i would be in there too much!!!!

feffertim 02-14-2012 08:36 AM

How wonderful to have all that room

kittykatz2001 02-14-2012 08:50 AM

WOW!! So much room. Starting out great. Love the cubicles. One thing you could do with your cutting table. I've seen them made higher with PVC pipe put on the legs. Makes it much easier on the back. I have my table raised with bed risers. Added 6 inches.

Check out the "workstation" unit. That would be fabulous for a cutting table could have the unit in the center of the room to walk around it.

We saw that when we were at Ikea. I didn't think the flat surface was big enough for cutting, though. My cutting mats are 70" long, and fit perfectly on the table I have. So it would be hard to go back to a smaller area.

jdeery 02-14-2012 10:05 AM

I do have one suggestion, for your cutting table, I would put them up on bed risers -you can get them at walmart.
It brings the table up to a perfect hieght for cutting and saves your back.

crafterrn1 02-14-2012 10:08 AM

Enjoy it! You seem very happy with your new space! Luann

Elaine433 02-14-2012 10:26 AM

Love your space. Wow, you have so much room. You even have enough room for a longarm set-up. My sewing room is also my computer room and a guest room. Want to trade!

Farm Quilter 02-14-2012 10:59 AM

Love your new sewing room! If you want to save your back when you are cutting, get a set of 4 bed risers and put under the legs (Ikea, Wal~Mart, Bed, Bath & Beyond) for about $10 will really make your back much happier (assuming you are taller than 5'!!). Can't wait to see the subsequent pictures!!!
