My sewing room - Before

I'm going to try and post my before and after pictures of my sewing room.

On the before ones, I did manage to get three quilts made with the mess it was in.

It took me almost two months to get it finished, but it's done now. I have all my fabric measured, folded and organized. It's a wonderful feeling, believe me. My sewing buddy is happy the mess is gone, too. As you can see, I have lots of memory items in my room besides sewing.

sak658 04-05-2014 04:44 PM

Well..I see you can work with it like it is..if you made 3 quilts...I have the same machine lamp...also a churn (not in my sewing room) and I love your rabbit...I know when you get it all organized it will be wonderful...Hop to it...it will soon be Easter...Wish I could come help...I love to organize...

Nammie to 7 04-05-2014 04:45 PM

You have some really neat stuff in your room. I like the churn in the last picture.

Oh my goodness, would I love to dive in there and root around. I wouldn't know where to focus first, but you can bet I'd have a field day!

I think you may have the same vintage Kenmore I sew on -- mine is a 158.1774. I absolutely love mine.

Nammie to 7 04-05-2014 04:47 PM

Your "after" room is very nice! Lots of work to get it that way!

sak658 04-05-2014 04:50 PM

Wow..what did I tell you...it looks so homey and wonderful...you like things that I like too...I have the machine hanging on the wall with the hooks under it..but I took my hooks off...you have some really neat things...you should be proud...you did an awesome job...now you can really turn out the quilts...Happy Quilting... You must have got some things from Collectionsetc...that's where I got all mine...they don't have many sewing things like they use to...love the row of ladies with the hats..where did you get those..

Billi 04-05-2014 04:50 PM

Nice work, I have other momentos in my room too they make me happy. Your sewing buddy looks like one of mine her name s Emma and she is a bit of a chubby-lumpkins, but she is sweet.

juliea9967 04-05-2014 04:53 PM

You did a great job. Now that you don't have anything to do maybe you could come and organize my room.
Your "new" room looks great, and it does appear that your best friend is liking it, too.

My sewing buddy's name is Penny and she loves to "help" me sew. Also she enjoys looking out the window at the birds and squirrels.

So glad your four-legged baby did not lose his throne! Want to do mine next? LOL!! I need it.

Most of the memory items in my room were given to me by family and friends through the years. Some things in there are 30-40 years old and I can tell you who gave me what on 99% of the things. That's what makes them so special to me.

phranny 04-05-2014 06:12 PM

What a neat collection of memory items! My mom made a match-stick cross just like the one you have on your wall, back in the 70's maybe? How nice to surround yourself with warm memories as you create.

Jingle 04-05-2014 06:29 PM

You did an amazing job cleaning up your sewing room. I need to organize my fabrics again. I have been sewing up a storm and have used up a bunch and have bunches left.

mandyrose 04-06-2014 02:14 AM

Amythyst02 04-06-2014 03:03 AM

Looks great, wonder how many quilts you can get done in your new organized sewing room : ) ?

lots2do 04-06-2014 03:30 AM

Thanks for the tour around your sewing room...grat before and after. I love the tree on your wall. Did you have to get rid of a lot or was it mostly just reorganizing?

Jackie Spencer 04-06-2014 05:00 AM

Good job! I used sell Avon in the early 80's and I had the Lady Thimble collection too, I gave it to my youngest daughter with all my other Avon collectables, including my Mrs. Alby's. You have lots of treasures!

omacookie 04-06-2014 05:23 AM

Good job girl ! Want to come to my house and spend a month ????You were brave to take all the before photos but they show off the organized room much better. Can you keep it that way ?

Crqltr 04-06-2014 05:26 AM

Thanks for the tour!! I bet it gets lots of people motivated! I have my "things". In my sewing room also! Cards and letters tacked on my cork boards along with my sewing stuff. Reminds me of the people I love!

Mariposa 04-06-2014 05:34 AM

Your room is lovely. Having special items along with your sewing things= great combination! :)

I did get rid of three 10-ream size boxes, but they were full of craft items that I don't do anymore. I donated them to the Church's daycare. The rest was just folding organizing and putting in boxes.

The tree was painted my my DDIL and my DH found and added the birdhouses.

The ladies with hats are actually thimbles. They were made by AVON in the 80's. Most of the items in my room are gifts from friends and family over the course of the past 30-40 years and they mean so much to me.

My Kenmore is model 158.18032. I bought it new in 1973 or 1974. It has been a workhorse, but now only sews slow because of a bad clutch. Since no ones makes the parts any longer, I haven't been able to get it repaired. However at the Tyler, TX quilt show, I met a man that has been in the repair business for over 40 years and he said he can fix it. So it's going to visit him next week. Free estimate, so nothing to lose.

It doesn't do all the things my modern one does, but it does some of the things even better.

It had never been that bad before, but we had a change in lift style that caused some of the mess. My husband is a minister. We used to live in the parsonage in another town on the weekends, so I had a machine, boxes of fabric, etc over there. When he retired, I had to bring everything home and that's the reason for all the extra boxes. So since I don't have fabric in other towns to come home again, I think I can keep it nice now. I'm sewing now and it is a pleasure to be able to put my hands on what I want, when I want it.

What a great sewing room and so many wonderful memory items you have. I love your sewing machine lamp with the patchwork shade! I might have trouble sewing in your room because I would be too busy looking at all the neat stuff - ha ha. You did a super job cleaning it up and have lots of fun sewing! :o

barri1 04-06-2014 08:52 AM

You did a great job.. Would you like to visit NY, and organize my one bedroom apartment.. It seems that when I run errands on Sats, fabric seems to follow me home.. I nearly came home with another singer 66 for $24.. but then thought of where I could put it, and wished it luck on getting a new home, and be loved..

Wonderful organization!!

I started to redo my sewing area (plaster, paint, lay a ceramic floor, etc.) and finally got book cases and storage from Ikea and started to organize it when two sister-in-laws became ill. I retired Jan 31, 2014 and hoped to finish organizing in sewing area in basement and quilt until my heart was content. BUT, when the SIL'd needed help, I thought "God's perfect timing", and they came first. One of my dear sisters by marriage has gone to heaven, the other is still living with us and will hopefully be well enough to go to her house in a week or two. Then, I can get back to it. I did not take pictures before I started the "fabric storage room", but will take before pictures of the big room I will be starting soon and then take after pictures and share them with you.

The Board members have been a great inspiration and have given me a lot of good ideas.

Thank you for sharing your great space with us!

I am eating lunch right now taking a break from cleaning my sewing room. Thank you for the kick in the pants to be able to go dive in again! Getting and making room for a new piece of machinery is also a great motivator. I hate cleaning my house but I have no problem rooting around and cleaning my little slice of heaven. Your heaven looks wonderful and fun. Love the Star Trek dolls! "Live long and Quilt On"!

crafty pat 04-06-2014 09:58 AM

It looks great, what a wonderful place to quilt. Mine looks like your before photos so maybe there is hope for me yet.

Chasing Hawk 04-06-2014 09:59 AM

Beautiful job on the organization!!

I just love the Mr. Spock doll! I am gonna have to find me one.

You did good! And your lovebug baby sure looks happy about it.

QuiltPat 04-06-2014 03:26 PM

Good for you! you made it look homey and functional too. In a before photo I spied an old blue toy SM. I have several similar ones. Mine are all brand Regina and I wondered what yours is.

It's a KAYanEE Sewmaster. It was given to me by my first quilt teacher when she sold her house and moved to assisted living in another town. It doesn't sew, but it means a lot.
