This took two days??

The majority of my stash has been in under bed storage tubs - but not under a bed. There were 5 of them, stacked one on top of another, in a closet. They were preferable to deep storage tubs - at least fabrics were only one layer deep!

I decided to to move it all into a cube style storage unit from Target, which fits in the closet where the bins were. It took me two days of unfolding, smoothing or ironing (only when necessary - it's almost 90 here!) and refolding to fit the cubes. When I look at the picture, that seems like a ridiculous amount of time.

Next is to refold and organize fat quarters, then cut scraps into squares and strips. I only need another two days!

Well yes ... And you got it done relatively fast compared to me! My sewing organizing into a closet took three months! Well, I was changing rooms and washed all my fabric and pressed it. And had no idea how I would organize it until I began the project and understood the space I had to deal with. Mine was during the winter though. I am sure that was much more pleasant than enduring that heat. Bless your heart.

I will say this, your quilting experience will change considerably now that you can see what you have and pull from your stash with ease. It is also much easier to put back where it belongs, so clean up is easier too. You did yours like I did by color. I love it.

I bought the fabric drawers that fit into the cubicles for my small rulers and templates, smaller stash pieces and projects. It really is nice to pull out a drawer and see what I have. No more searching and searching knowing it is there and can't find. You will love your new quilting life, believe me!

Enjoy your new storage, you certainly earned it with all your hard determined work.

By the way here's mine just in case you are wondering about those fabric drawers.

I think that you did that in ONLY two days is impressive! Very nicely organized.

Looks great! I was surprised how long it takes to organize and fold my stash, too. Mine all fits in a 4 drawer dresser, and took me 3 days. Sure is nice to find what I want, though!

tessagin 07-08-2013 04:51 AM

Very impressed.

kbonafede 07-08-2013 05:01 AM

Excellent looking stash. I am impressed that you stuck with the task for two whole days. Isn't it a great feeling of accomplishment? I would so enjoy just looking at the finished stacks of folded fabrics, sitting in a rocking chair and patting myself on the back for a job well done! Please!! Be extremely proud of yourself.

You did a great job! Congratulations. It is time well spent, and every time you need to find a fabric, you will realize that again, I predict.

So what if it took two days? You work at your own pace, and it should be a joyful task. Now you can find what you want, and it looks great.

When I moved my sewing room a few months ago, it took me nearly four days just to redo my fat quarters. And over a week to do all my yardage. The move was three months from start to finish going from a partly finished room in the basement to a nice cozy upstairs bedroom. I didn't think to take any before photos, but here is the finished Wall of Fabrics:

It was worth all the time spent because now I can SEE it all. It will be great to know what fabric you own and have it all right there and ready to go. Enjoy!

I'm impressed, beautiful job

Country1 07-14-2013 06:12 AM

Looks great!

orangeroom 07-14-2013 06:29 AM

You did a nice job! I'm sure you came across a few fabrics that you forgot you even had! I did the same thing a few years ago when I was recovering from minor surgery. It took me about the same amount of time. Our family room looked a mess for a few days. However the end result was beautiful in my mind.

craftiladi 07-24-2013 05:48 AM

Awesome Job, now isn't it great to just stand back and look at your stash, certainly going to be much easier to see what you have-Again, congrats.

Grandma58 07-28-2013 06:26 PM

I like cubes better then anything else ever! Your look wonderful!

owlvamp 07-28-2013 06:33 PM

Beautiful and well worth it.

peaceandjoy 07-29-2013 03:12 AM

Reality is that I wasn't quite done - will I ever be? - and those cubes are now filled. Sorted roughly by color, with one cube dedicated to bright children's fabrics and one to fabrics that are earmarked for upcoming projects. These are just my fabric cuts - my large cutting table (http://www.quiltingboard.com/mission...e-t212058.html) is filled with scraps, strips and squares that I have cut, as well as started projects. Then there is my flannel, in another closet (although not too much of that). I love scrappy quilts, and use both Bonnie Hunter's Scrap User's System and Joan Ford's Scrap Therapy.

Judith1005 07-29-2013 05:45 AM

Wow, I love how you organized your fabric. Beautiful. I hope it will help you to use more of your treasured stash. I'm sure you found some fabrics that you forgot you had and also some what was I thinking  fabrics. lol :) Have fun in your new creative space.

qbquilts 08-08-2013 09:02 AM

Very nice. I've been working on organizing my sewing room a few weeks now. I've got the main fabric storage area organized but I've still got several totes (8 - 9?) to go through. Sadly, my method of cleaning involves dumping everything into a tote to go through later, which only works if I actually go through the totes! Looks great!

nunnyJo 08-08-2013 11:34 AM

wow, love the look

Lovequilting22 08-11-2013 02:00 PM

Beautiful!!!! I have to check those cubes out!

QuiltnNan 08-27-2013 05:52 PM

Dotha 09-03-2013 09:39 AM

That is absolutely beautiful. I love refolding and touching the fabric.

PecksPieces 09-04-2013 07:47 AM
