Went to the Container Store and got 3 more drawers and 2 more shelves to add to the closet in my sewing room -- and I got them installed (with a little help from DSIL). I unpacked 2 medium cartons of fabric in plastic boxes and 4 book size boxes of fabric -- have been reorganizing the fabric in the big shelves (not closet) to make room. When we went to install the new closet pieces I also moved some shelves so the only part of the sewing room you can walk in fight now is the part in front of the closet (not to mention the batting that is in the guest bath tub...). Need to start cleaning the place out again so I can get the smaller pieces into the drawers. Sigh....

AU Quilter- thanks for your post!
I like your ideas. You reminded me that I have a bunch of magazines to go through, as well. Thanks for the link too. My hubby could use a few of those boxes and they are a reasonable price, too. When I read the reviews. I saw someone mention that his wife uses them to store extra fabric! :)

Dug into my scrap muslin bin to cut pieces for a quilt in progress. I plan on saving the small strips...1" for the sashing strips like this

I love when I have a 'lightbulb' moment! Aftering sorting some batiks last weekend, it dawned on me that I was hosting 6th-12th graders for an hour service project today. They sorted the rest of my batiks along with other fabric by color. It would have taken me many hours to do that sorting! The youth and adults also did other projects that I brought for them.

How's everyone doing with organizing? This past week I got busy working on some collaborative pieces (finished one!, made good progress on two more) and also some of my solo pieces and now every horizontal surface in my tiny sewing studio is covered.

My art studio is no better. That's where I have my big table that I use for squaring quilts, ironing yardage, building stretcher frames and whatever else needs doing that doesn't fit in my sewing studio. The table is currently piled with: a quilt that needs ironing and some some remedial handwork along a couple of seams and a label sewn on so I can enter it in a quilt show; a UFO log cabin top that I am considering cutting up to make a Convergence quilt; some fabric scraps that need to be put away; assorted rulers; Go cutting dies; and several pairs of scissors. On the drawing table next to it is a shoebox full of stabilizer scraps (which have somehow exploded partway out of the box), a box of batting scraps (ditto on the explosion), more scissors, and two pastel drawings that I have been working on. The drafting chair is now home to a UFO and several collaborative pieces that I'm doing with DH who is a photographer, the reclining chair that Bubba likes to sleep in while I'm working is filled with quilts that were in a gallery show in December and still need to be put in storage. I could go on, but I'm sure you get the picture.

Given all all that mess, my question is this: Which is most in need of re- organization--- these two rooms or the disorderly mind that seems to be the root cause??? :p

Rryder-------after reading your post, my space looks organized-not! I can't be the one to tell you where to begin...just work from the top to the bottom of each heap! And swear this will never happen again.....until next time, anyway.

Okay. I worked on both rooms and got most of the stuff put away And managed to finish a UFO as well. I also took advantage of free shipping and a sale to order one of those Gidget I tables for my old Kenmore. That has been a major help as I use the Kenmore to do a type of binding on my art quilts that none of my other zigzag machines can do. I had my Kenmore sitting partly on an old writing table and partly on another table in order to get enough flat surface to the left of the needle to help support the pieces while binding them, but it was still a major pain because the Kenmore sat up too high for me to sew comfortably and I still had to help support the left side of the piece while binding. Yesterday I bound an art quilt using my new set up with the Kenmore sunk into the Gidget I table-- what a difference! Why didn't I do this years ago?

The icing on the cake is that my sewing area looks a lot better (less cluttered) as well and I was able to use the old writing table as a night stand next to the guest bed so I didn't lose any storage!

Next job is to go through the closet in my art studio and get rid of extraneous stuff so it can be used to store things I actually need. That will get a fair number of things off the floor.

So so how is everyone else doing?

Nice to see a new post on this thread! We have family coming to visit this coming week so my sewing room will be converted into a guest room starting tomorrow. I am hoping to do this in the best way possible so I can convert it back easily. Soon I'll also need to start sorting what projects will go to Maine and what will stay here....

retiredteacher09 04-03-2017 07:24 AM

I am sorting through the donated batik scraps that were organized by color by my church youth last month and putting them in bags by their print. I have started using some of them in baby quilt blocks. Most of the scraps are 2 to 3" wide of varying lengths so it is definitely a challenge to find colors I like together. :)

I am also clearing the scraps off of my cutting tables from previous projects like the Bonnie Hunter Mystery which is still on Step 7. Lol!
