What are we organizing today (2017)?

Ready to get started? I'd like to go through one of my drawers in the shelves underneath the sewing machine. Who knows what I'll find! And you?

rryder 01-01-2017 03:41 AM

Thanks for starting this thread.

On Friday I was given a grocery bag full of trims and a cardboard box containing a huge black trash bag with a lot of fabric, notions and trims that came out of my grandmother's house. I will go through those today and decide what to keep and what to donate. Then I need to put away all the keepers.

my goals for this week are to:
1. take the filled donation boxes to goodwill.
2. Go through the paperwork catchall sitting on my office desk, assign a storage space for the paperwork that needs to be kept and get rid of everything else.

My goal today is to create a nice clean sewing environment for myself! I let my room get completely cluttered with fabrics after completing the last few quilts that I worked on, now I'm so overwhelmed by it all that I just dread going in there! Therefore today I will clear up the mess. I started to make a DP9 and I need to wait for a delivery of some fabric I ran out of so this is the perfect opportunity to get this under control! I can conquer this!

I had a really busy December because it was the bi-annual Christmas gathering of family. We had 11 people here and I had made 12 of the Christmas gifts. Now, January is the time to get re-organized for the upcoming year. I also need to finish some paper work to end the year and get ready for tax time. I also plan to purge all the closets and drawers. I do a pretty good job of keeping this done on an ongoing basis but once a year it is done on a large scale. I just don't want to deal with stuff I don't want or need. I look forward to doing this annual task.

tucsonquilter 01-01-2017 06:17 AM

It's going to take me more than one day to organize and clean my sewing room. Two days ago I listed the ufos that are floating around my house and I can't believe there are so many. I wish there was a "UFO" group I can join that would help to motivate me and then we can show the ufos that are finished. And I'm writing this as I drink my coffee trying to get the 'get up and go' moving. LOL

There is a 2017 UFO group (http://www.quiltingboard.com/quiltin...h-t284858.html). I am hoping it will help motivate me to finish some of my unfinished projects before starting new ones.

zozee 01-01-2017 02:12 PM

Today I'll start organizing by making list of what needs to be organized/finished/started/given away/tossed. I do better working from paper when the task is so large.

Quilty-Louise 01-01-2017 04:28 PM

Trying to fold fabric onto the boards so I can than get them put on
the shelves.

Purpleprint 01-01-2017 04:57 PM

Somehow this last year I purchased boxes of quilt magazines. Got them at used stores and garage sales. My goal is to go through them and donate back what I will not use. I have taken the pages out of some but now I have loads of notebooks that take up space. Guess it is time to get back to using only what I buy and only buying what I will use.
Is that possible for a quilter?

Sandra in Minnesota 01-01-2017 05:28 PM

There are a lot of drawers that I haven't been into in the last 2 years. Going to get in there and start some throwing!

lots2do 01-01-2017 07:33 PM

Glad to see this thread!
I got pretty annoyed today which wasn't the best way to start a New Year but the flip side of that was that when I put myself in solitary confinement I went through my clothes and gathered a large and small bag for the local thrift store. I took the bags right out to the car. I have a few odd pieces of fabric -as in what was I thinking? I can take those to the free table at my quilt guild this week. I, too, have magazines to go through and recycle. Felt good to start!

tuckyquilter 01-01-2017 08:11 PM

I'm shredding papers and cutting scraps that have been on the cutting table way to long. This will take more than a day.

QuiltnLady1 01-01-2017 08:19 PM

I organized the area where my new cutter is -- trying to make room for the dies and mats in a very small area.

Neuras 01-01-2017 11:41 PM

Wow, you guys are doing great!

jmoore 01-02-2017 04:00 AM

thank you Neuras for starting this thread...I think it should be a bi-weekly post (some of us need routine motivation). I do the same as Zozee...I write a 2017 list of goals and finishes on a poster board which is hung in my sewing room.
Once my DH and I take down the tree and box up all the ornaments today, I will start tidying up my sewing area and dig out my UFOs.

eimay 01-02-2017 06:40 AM

Yesterday I finished straightening my sewing room that had been infiltrated by Christmas items, canned food to be stored and more. Now I need to proceed to the room where I store my fabric (no small task!)

Snooze2978 01-02-2017 07:30 AM

Not organizing today but later this month I'll be putting in all new shelves for my fabrics. Taking the bookcases I'm using now upstairs for the books that have been in totes since 2007. If I measured correctly I'll gain 6 extra feet plus all my bolts will finally be off the floor. This will be a great time to dust everything off and start fresh again, organize my fabrics by color, collections, etc. May even find some UFOs among the shelves and drawers. Found one project I'd started back in 2002, pulled it out and its now a small wallhanging waiting to be quilted. Its fun to find things you've totally forgotten about.

DonnaC 01-02-2017 11:27 AM

Well, I have my sewing room completely disassembled at the moment! Decided to add my other Gidget table so that I could have both my machines set up at the same time. (I do garment and other sewing as well as quilting so I have a bells-and-whistles machine along with my Juki 2010Q for straight stitchery.) So in order to do that, I needed to get rid of one storage unit which was never optimal anyway and just seemed to be a junk collector. So you know how that goes - dominoes! To move one thing you have to move three other things and find storage for the things that got moved outta the other thing! :)

This is about the 27th configuration this sewing room has been in since my mom passed in 2012. It used to be her bedroom so it stood pretty much unused for a year or so, because I felt so sad when I was in there. Eventually I got into my thick head that my mom knew how much I loved to sew, so she wouldn't want that room standing idle... she would want me to use it!

I've got the furniture in place now, just sorting through fabrics and little things and trying to figure out where to store everything. One funny story - in that room, I have an old rectangular laundry hamper, which I had to move during the reno. I said to myself, this thing weighs a ton - what the heck is in here? Well, it's a cornucopia of KITS that I had completely forgotten about! Some are just table runner or pillow kits, but several are kits for full-sized throws or wall quilts. Somewhere on my computer I do have a list of the kits waiting to be sewn, but I thought I should also take a photo of each kit so I have a visual... now I can look at the photos and pick which one to do next! So I'm in the process of taking those photos as well.

Sigh.... going back to work tomorrow will NOT be as much fun as I'm having today. :)

I don't have a sewing room organization goal right now. I needed a break from reorganizing so I am using my free time to sew, tie fleece blankets, and organize other parts of my house for now. Over Christmas break, I spent a lot of time combining my MIL's fabric and mine into boxes/bins by color. I was forever trying to dig through my various boxes to find certain colors. I'm so glad my stash isn't very big because it was still an overwhelming task. :)

I have several tote bags I need to empty.

gmcsewer 01-02-2017 03:13 PM

For those of you who can't get started I thought I would tell you what I did. I got in the mood and organized my spare bedroom with my quilting stuff in it. I sorted the batting pieces into type and then by size. /Then put them into two plastic tubs in the bottom of the closet. I have quite a bit of flannel so sorted it by color and size. I had a chest of drawer with three drawers that I had emptied so I Put the smaller pieces by color into two of them. and the bigger yardage into one drawer. I separated my scrap into colors and put the green yellow blue into one plastic tub and the red orange into another and had a large cabinet where I stored these. I feel so much better having it done

oksewglad 01-02-2017 04:05 PM

Wednesday I got my batting odds in ends in order before DD and family arrived for our Christmas, so glad that's all neat and tidy...
This morning I put together a kit from stash...created the quilt in EQ and searched for fabrics that corresponded with the pattern. I wrote up cutting instructions for blocks, setting squares and triangles, and 3 borders. Later, I started working on a couple of UFO miniatures...one went back in the bag it was in as the pieces didn't fit. It needs more time to simmer. It won't be long and I will have 2 mini tops done...Will get them sandwiched tonight and then start planning a couple of small quilts for January commitments...of course the fabric all comes from stash.:)

RedGarnet222 01-02-2017 04:38 PM

Today took the tree down and I put all of the christmas decorations away into bins for the garage. It is a big deal to keep it organized so when I get them back out they go into the rooms they decorate for the holidays.

I usually go for the sewing room after I finish this and the cleaning. I know it isn't sewing, but I am alway s happy to have this done and out of my hair.

eastslopequilter 01-03-2017 06:18 AM

I started to finish UFO's yesterday and got one done and another started. That is my goal to finish them first. My sewing room will look a lot better when they are done and out of the way. I organize my stash by color in a dresser. That helps a lot.

momsbusy 01-03-2017 06:28 AM

I have been packing for a retreat and my sewing room is upside down. I am going to find the top of my sewing/cutting tables.

bennie0755 01-03-2017 06:35 AM

There is a UFO group on Facebook. 17 in 2017 the idea is to finish 17 UFOs this year.

Sewing Room Re-organization!

5 Attachment(s)
After being off for Christmas Break (I work for a school district in Texas) and having several Christmas events, finally had some down time the last part of last week and had to get my sewing room organized! After several sewing projects going on for gifts and using my sewing room as Christmas wrapping station, it was a disaster. Took me four hours, I went thru every little container, box, etc. and re-organized and threw away a trash bag of old stuff (no fabric of coarse)! Attaching pics of the end result!

oksewglad 01-03-2017 07:12 AM

Looking great, Jeananne...looks like a great place to sew...

I have the day off due to weather...going to head to the sewing room!

redstilettos 01-03-2017 10:03 AM

Jeananne: looks great!
oksewglad: I am envious. I'd love to get snowed in and be "forced" to sew ;)

I didn't do all that much this past weekend for organization, but I did find the time to cut out my foam posterboard into pieces so I can fold the fabric I am expecting in the mail. Small baby steps....but it felt good knowing it was there and ready to go.

I think we BOTH need Jeananne to come to our houses...look what she did in 4 hours! My stash is huge, like yours!!! It will take alot longer to do ours...one can wish, anyway! :)

Nammie to 7 01-03-2017 02:46 PM

The other day I was in my sewing room putting fabric away when I found 2 packages of 5" charms. Didn't know where to put them so ended up making a spool quilt. I just need to put the borders on and piece the backing then it will go to the quilter. But my machine is having a problem so ended up taking it to the shop today. Guess I'm back to cleaning up the sewing room! My goal is to have all the fabric put away and the top of my sewing cabinet cleared off by the time my machine is done.

Last year my NYResolution was to finish up my IPO's (In Progress Objects sounds so much more positive than UFO, don't you think?). I finished a couple then people had babies and that required a new project, and then life happened and there was another delay, then it was Christmas and that was its own set of projects. However, I picked up an IPO off of the shelf yesterday and started pinning the blocks together! I have 2 weeks to finish this quilt (throw size and the blocks are finished, just need to finish the top) and I will gift it to my brother and his wife.

See if you can either finish or work on one project a month. One of my favorite quotes is that the Great Wall of China can be seen from Outer Space, but it went together one brick at a time.

oksewglad 01-04-2017 10:40 AM

Got the mini flimsy done last night and the one mini UFO completed. Going to work on the January commitments...have 4 small quilts to make, the completed mini flimsy is one.

Here's the UFO challenge here on the QB...it's fun to see what gets finished and often how long they have been sleeping in lala quiltland....

Brought out containers of scraps to cut early next week. Tonight sewing the last 12 rows of a SCRAPPY brick quilt- just found a duplicate brick so out that will come and should finish sewing, press and decide on backing this evening! The organizing is focusing on the quilts that need binding, hence the cutting next week. Then onto the one or two finished but no backing or binding chosen quilts finished before Thanksgiving. I have about 8 days here without DH so it is cut, sew, press, sort, and repeat. I made a list - will get done, want to get done and "if me and Mr. Ripper don't spend much time together- it may get done". Little cooking, no tv, lots of radio and right now just quiet!

What a wonderful rack/shelf for your charm square packets! Did you make it?

Neuras 01-06-2017 10:18 AM

Love the idea! I'd love to put soup in the pot & sewing all day!

Kris P 01-06-2017 03:52 PM

Oh dear, I didn't organized anything. Instead I went to SR Harris and bought 20 yards of fabric. I better go make some quilts!
